How to DISPLAY AUTHOR's Name, rather than "Commentary on the Book of Luke" or "St Paul's Epistle to

While in Seminary, we usually referred to commentaries and other works by the Author's name. So, I might refer to Hoehner on Ephesians, or Best on Ephesians, or Lincoln or Hughes on Ephesians, etc.

While it is easy to click and see the author's name of a book, it is a constant frustration when I have multiple commentaries open. I want to DISPLAY the Author (I already know that I am studying Ephesians or whichever book I am in (most usually). Is there a way to do this that I am just missing?

See, the exact title of the book is of little consequence to me. Quite frankly, I can't tell you by title who wrote the book or even what series it is in (unless that is part of the title, such as MacArthur New Test. Commentary on..."). And forgive my ignorance, but, even if I do have a series title, I can't always remember that it was Obrien who wrote in the Pillar series, Liefeld in IVP, Lincoln for Word, and/or Anders who wrote in Holman's series. And on rare instances when I remember that, I find myself taking time to check myself. How much easier to look at the BOOK TAB and see the Authors name.

So, is it possible? Or is this something that we would need to ask for in a future update?? How nice it would be to see Geldenhuys on Luke or Bock, IVP, Luke, or some variation on this, where Author's name is the first thing I see. Anyone else think this would be useful?

Hi JJ. You should be able to solve this by giving your commentary a short name.

Open the Library window.
Select the Resource.
Depress the Information icon (I in a circle). This opens a pane to the right.
Fill in the short name you want.

In the pic below, the short name is Little Kittel.

Just want to add this does work. In seminary I got used to calling Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics, Wallace. By giving that book the Wallace as its short name I can even open the book from the command box by typing "Open Wallace." And, of course, on the tab it says Wallace.

I have played with the SHORT TITLE feature, but only on a few titles... therefore, I didn't notice that it also effected the tabs. Of course the short title would only show when the several windows are open, if I understand correctly. Still, this is normally when I want to see this information.

I tried it with my Ephesians commentaries. And it does work. However, when you have 4 or 5 commentaries, they start reducing to icons. Still, a step in the right direction.

I notice (with open resources) that the Locator Bar (if on) shows the Book name, the chapter, the subsection, etc. Well, if I am in Ephesians, I don't really need to see as the first two items, Ephesians . A Commentary on Ephesians > etc. One could conceive that the first item there might be Hoehner (since he wrote the Ephesians part of that Cornerstone Commentary). That would be nice. It would limit how many times Logos tells me I am in Ephesians and give me some beneficial information.

Then again, above the Locator Bar is the (?) information bar (?) and it is mostly empty. Perhaps Logos could tell the Information Bar to display Citation information (since that starts with the last name of the resource) immediately after the Parallel Resource icon (or simply Author's name).

I suppose, the Locator Bar might be a better way to show this, since in many combined works, the author changes with the Bible book being presented. But, having that information before me seems immeasurably more valuable than yet another place to see the title of the work.

I had the same frustration as the original poster, and with a bit of playing around, it seems the right thing to do is to change the MAIN title. This means that it gets displayed in the Commentary search (the main place I tend to select things from). I'll take the opportunity to shorten series names as well, so I now have, for instance "Thiselton: NIGTC 1 Corinthians" as a title.

Again, it would be extremely helpful for Logos to provide an option to do this automatically, since, particularly with commentaries, it's very easy to get several books with very similar titles.
