Free upgrades

What ever happened to free upgrades for the software because you are paying for the books not the software?    Now Logos will give you some small part of the software free but for all the features you have to pay for an upgrade.   and to get just a few features you have to pay for a cross-grade or some such thing. And from what I can see from the little that I got with the so called free upgrade I"ll just stick with version 3.   4 seems rather useless.

In L3 one purchased add-ins for PBB, sermons etc. Logos found that the model of add-in modules was difficult to maintain - so now some features that are built in are "turned on" with certain packages. As an end-user, I'm not sure which model I prefer. But welcome to the forums, and to your preference[:)]

    Dennis, welcome!

Most of the features (if not all) that buying the crossgrade to L4 "enables" come from new resources. For example, Biblical People relies on a new database that better traces genealogy. To use your current resources Logos 4 will work without you spending a penny. However, an L4 upgrade will give you new resources designed to help your entire library work together better.

Personally, I find L4 to be much better than L3 for my needs. If 4 doesn't meet your needs then sticking with 3 is a good idea. However, what about 4 do you find to be useless? What can you do with 3 that you feel like you'd lose with 4? We might be able to show you some things about 4 that will surprise you.

    Hi Dennis,

Though I was a beta tester for 4 (& 3), I'd developed such a comfort with version 3 that I felt much the same... at 1st.

I gotta tell you, though. I hung in there, & I'm so glad I did. If you'll give it a chance, you'll find that some things in v4 just AREN'T in v3. And the cost of the cross-grade is for resources, not functionality. Those resources that help make L4 REALLY helpful (a graphics mini-library of people, places, & things). I can't tell you how many times I've found a helpful graphic in that package for use in a Bible study or to help folks visualize the scene in a sermon.

MJ's given you the technical change in their model, but from a user's perspective there's no difference. The software & upgrades are free (the lastest 4.3 upgrade even adds the personal book builder for free, formerly a cost item). The features have always been associated witht the resources that needed them--L3 & L4.

Hang in there, & blessings to you.

(Edit: Sorry MJ for misattributing your post to Rosie--though I'm sure she'd feel honored. [:)])

    Grace & Peace,
    Bill

First off on 3 when I move the mouse over a word in the KJV it will pop up a window that gives the Strong's information.  (I use this a lot).  But in 4 it only pops up the Strong's # and then I have to open another window and then click on Strong's dictionary to get the information.  That's extra steeps I don't have time for.  I see no way to change a setting or anything like that.  And what happened to topic searches.  I see no way to do that like in 3.

The closest to this is if you have the information pane open. The stongs entry will appear there when you hover on a word in the text.

Logos 4 Reverse Interlinear Bibles can display numbers inline with pop-up when mouse hovers over a number.  For New Testament, personally prefer Louw-Nida numbers (contextual usage pop-up) over Strong's numbers.

Logos 4 includes Topic in a Basic search of All Text in Entire Library:

Note: Logos 4 searches for articles in Library is noticeably faster than Libronix 3.

    topic searches

I don't do topic searches the same way any more.

If the topic is a Biblical place, person, or thing, I use one of those reports & QUICKLY get my topic--usually with a helpful graphic to boot.

If it's a Biblical theme (e.g., faith, hope, etc.), I've decided to use a layout of linked topical Bibles (Naves, etc.) & again VERY quickly get to what the Bible says about <you name it>.

Lastly, if it isn't in any of these categories, I search the entire library. Entire library searches with focused key words get me to a topic pretty quickly & are VERY fast compared to L3. Hope this helps...

Cool That will work ok.  I Iike the way the window popped up before but this one has more info not shure it's info I'm looking for but it works.  I don't see my Englishmans concordance in 4 I bet I have to upgrade that one to get it work?    also you said " Logos 4 Reverse Interlinear Bibles can display numbers inline with pop-up when mouse hovers over a number."   I have an interlinear but I don't think I can do the same things with it.  I may have to upgrade to have reverse interlinears?   I also see the KJV Pictured on your post but all I have is the authorized bible is it the same as the KJV in 3?  Seems the same but not sure why they ca hanged the name on mine but you still show it as KJV on yours?

Wiki Getting Started with Logos => Prioritize Library can be useful since pop-up for Strong and Louw-Nida numbers use highest prioritized resources (lexicons).

I don't see my Englishmans concordance in 4

Learned Logos 4 Bible Word Study (BWS) plus Lexham Analytical to the Greek New Testament obsoleted need for my printed Englishman's Greek Concordance.

    image

Can click on BWS ring segment to show verses with lemma translation.  The Lexham Analytical Lexicon to the Greek New Testament includes cognate words plus all references for lemma use (with Louw-Nida contextual numbering).  Logos 4 has 3 Authorized Versions: the Cambridge Paragraph Bible of the Authorized English Version (AV 1873) and King James Version (KJV 1900) have Reverse Interlinear tagging with inline display options while the Authorized Version (AV) has Strong's tagging, which is available via right click.  Note: can double click an English word in a Bible to open highest prioritized resource with English Headwords (e.g. Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words).

I also see the KJV Pictured on your post but all I have is the authorized bible is it the same as the KJV in 3?  Seems the same but not sure why they ca hanged the name on mine but you still show it as KJV on yours?

Screen capture includes about information for 4 English Bibles with Authorized Version heritage (appears to be the same as "About this resource" in Libronix 3).

also you said " Logos 4 Reverse Interlinear Bibles can display numbers inline with pop-up when mouse hovers over a number."   I have an interlinear but I don't think I can do the same things with it.  I may have to upgrade to have reverse interlinears?

Logos has minimal crossgrade that includes Logos 4 Reverse Interlinear resources for Bibles that are licensed to you => http://www.logos.com/minimalcrossgrade

I think the Englishman's concordance went the way of the dodo bird.  In Logos there really isn't any need for a concordance at all since this can all be accomplished through searches.

I"ll just stick with version 3.   4 seems rather useless.

    Dennis,

I was right where you are about six months after I ugraded from 3 to 4 (I was an early adopter). I even removed 4 from my computers and left it off for about a month going back to using 3. I saw Logos 4 as totally useless for me and felt I did not have the time to invest in learning it. Logos 3 had worked well for me so why subject myself to the stress? But as I read the forums and followed the discussions I decided to give it another chance. That was just over a year ago and I am glad I did. I now have Logos installed on both my desktop and laptop (purchased 4 months ago) and neither of them has version 3. The learning curve has been long and not without some frustrations but I can now accomplish so much more in a lot less time, And I have only tapped a small fraction of the potential available. Sermon and lesson prep is much easier and the wealth of resources is amazing. My personal Bible study is much richer than I ever imagined. And it just keeps getting better.

I hope you will give Logos 4 another try and be patient as you learn a completely new way of doing Bible study or preparing sermons and lessons. But once you get past the initial challenges and trials I am certain you wll have no regrets.

    Blessings,

    Bob

Ya I'll give it a try ans I'll have to call tech sometime about the KJV.  I'm not sure why it did not come over to 4 I know I have it in 3 and It seems like it comes with almost only bundle you can buy.  Why it is not here I just don't know.  And I most say getting the info for the Strong's numbers is much slower now.  I think I will change ti click instead of hover because it is so slow any way.  I' try prioritizing first and see if that helps.
