Is 1gb data enough for 3G IPAD searching mode for the whole month? Let's say I'll only use 2-3 hrs of my 1gb data in my 3G ipad exclusively for logos application only. Is this sufficient for 1 month usage? How many kb or mb is used when searching the entire library of 1600plus ebooks?

Dong,  I use Logos on an iPad2, and I keep 3G turned off all the time.  You can download the Logos books that you most frequently access while connected to a free wifi (like an internet cafe), or your home network if you have a wireless router.  Its true that I don't have access to my full library, but I'm rarely doing my most serious study on the iPad instead of a desktop.

I know that didn't directly answer your question, but may be a viable alternative for you.

Well let me have a shot at at least one part of your question.

Searching your library will take none of your 3G allowance - the search is done on the server. Taking the search parameters up and downloading the results are likely to be very light on your allowance unless you search of all occurrences of 'the' or 'and' or even 'God'.

Using 3G as a connection is likely to be an expensive way of using your iPad other than for infrequent use - Wi-Fi is far more ecconomical.

I use logos with 3g and the most significant data requirement is the downloading of resources. From my experience it does not appear that logos downloads the resources you access remotely, but rather downloads the pages you are viewing. Searching is all performed on their servers, so again just the results are downloaded and even then I think you only download the content when you access the particular resource in question.

If you are downloading resources for offline use, and using your data for other things you might run into a problem. Otherwise I would think 1 GB should be plenty.

    Hope that helps,

    Andrew

  • Hi Andrew, Thanks for your reply. Actually, I'm planning to get micro-sim card data for my ipad. It is expensive here in UAE,Abu Dhabi. So I just want to make sure if it is practical for my side to get one.Either the Micro Simcard 1GB data or the 200mb data. Again, if ever I'll subscribe, I'll use it exclusively for my Ipad logos searching mode escially using my logos entire library. Now, do you have any idea if the searching mode of logos resources will use the same amount of data like using facebook features in IPAD 3G? Thank you and God bless!

I did a test using the usage statistics in the iPhone (I don't have my iPad with me at the moment) to see how much data was used... I can't imagine there is a huge difference between iphone and ipad data usage, but I will do a quick test when my wife brings the iPad home.

I searched using my entire library as the scope, and it returned an initial page of results which appears to have used 45 KB of data. Scrolling down, there is a load more results link, which when you hit it it continues to load additional results. Each time I loaded more results it seems to take another 45 KB of results. So the amount of data required when doing a search appears to have to do with how many results you need to find what you're looking for.

I also ran the default passageguide for John 3:16 and this took about 165 KB and after click the "more" link under my commentaries the data used did not go up which leads me to believe it downloads everything, but only displays a subset for display purposes and does not go back to the server like the above search does.

Interesting to note... it appears that logos does check a few things on startup which has a data hit that varies depending on the number of offline resource updates, devotionals, reading plans etc..

This of course only relates to the search functions and the resources you read will have data requirements of their own. For example, loading a page from the results and scrolling through an additional 5 pages used about 300 KB of data. I repeated this test a couple times with differing results. So, it looks like the amount of pages you pull down from the Logos servers will probably have a greater impact on data usage, then the amount of searching you do.

As a comparison I started up the Facebook app, which took me straight to my news feed. I didn't click any where and it used about 312 KB to load the first screen. After that I clicked on to friend names to go to their profile page, did a search for a friend and loaded his profile page. This took another 100 KB.

So to it does appear that the data requirements between the two apps are similar.

This is obviously a limited test, and your carrier may measure usage slightly differently than you iOS device, so this is in not necessarily a reliable benchmark, but hopefully this gives you a rough idea of the order of magnitude for the data requirements. Happy to provide any other data points you may find helpful.

  • Thank so for your detailed inputs. Big help, indeed!

In case, you have the chance to test the ipad about the data usage in search mode of a particular subject, verse or passage using the entire library.Pls. share your test results with me,too. I'm in the crossroad whether to buy a micro sim 1GB  for my ipad or not. Of course, the main reason simple financial reason as the data plan payment  here in UAE is quite high.

Again, thank God for your life! You are a blessing to me!

    God bless!

so.... Dong could do 158 combined searches and passage guides transactions per day and stay within 1 GB per month (roughly 1000kb / 210kb = 4.76 serach+PG's per megabyte * 1000MB = 4760 per month / 30 days in the month = about 158 combined search+PG's per day).  Simplistic, because Dong won't always do a search+PG for a transaction, but the trend does indicated that 1 GB of data per month ought to be plenty.  Nicely done Andrew!  [Y]

  • Mark,

Thank for calculating things for me[:)]. Hope both iPhone 4 and iPAD 1 are having the same speed in doing the Search and Passage Guide to really justify the test's conclusion.

    Again, thank you so much!

    God bless!
