Does anyone know how to get Logos 4 to display Theological Journals when doing a Passage Guide search? With the old system those journals would show up when doing a Passage Gudie search.
Thanks,
Larry Dix
I may be wrong, but I think you first have to make a new collection, finding each journal and adding it to your collection. Name it something like Journals.
Then in your Passage Guide, you can add diffferent collections. Add a collection and choose the new one for journals you created.

I think you are right. I'm pretty sure this was the same procedure for 3.0
No, I did not have to go and add the journals to a collection. Version 3 automatically did it for me. Correct me if I am wrong, are you saying that I will have to go through and manually add all the volumes from each of the journals? That would take a very long time for all the volumes.
Thanks for the help
Please take another look at 3.0 and the passage guide.
To do what you are saying you had to do one of two things:
1. You could set up the Passage Guide to search through collections. That section is called "Collections" and in that scrolling window you must have had a collection of journals.
2. You could hit the "Search Entire Library for Passage" that appears after the passage guide is open.
Journals were not automatically included in the Passage Guide.
You can include them by creating a collection. You do not have to work too hard to do this. Open the collections pane. Hit the "New" button. Name the collection. Type "type:journal" in the "Start with resources matching" window and all your journals will appear in the collection. You can now close the collection pane.
You will need to create a custom Passage Guide to include this collection. Under the Guides Menu, select "make a new guide template". On the LHS of that pane you'll see the options you can include in your custom passage guide. be sure to include 'Collections' and use the drop-down list on that item's bar to specify your journals. Give this passage guide a name and then you can open and run it any time you choose.
Right on Mark, L4 PG does with collection what I could never do in L3 and my Journals! Good stuff.
Mark thank you for your assistance. I will try what you suggested and we will see what happens. Concerning v3, all that I did was pop in the disk, the update process took care of the rest. I didn't have to do anything else except take the disk out of the computer. Gets any more complicated than that and I have difficulties:)
Thanks again
Hi Larry,
I had the same problem.
I don't know if this is the proper way of fixing this, but I did the following and it worked a treat:
I selected collections under tools, called my new collection 'journals' and then typed 'type:journal' in the field entitled 'Start with resources matching'.
I then selected 'Make a New Guide Template' under 'Guides'. I selected the option, 'All Sections from... Passage Guide' and then just added collections and specifically 'Journals'.
I have also done something similar with my sermon collections (I have the John Piper sermon collection among others), but first had to tag my resources as sermons. I then used the command 'mytag:sermon' to create the original journal.
I am surprised that under v. 3 your journals were automatically added to the passage guide? I only bought the theological library in May and remember having to create a collection in order to use them through the passage guide. It seems a lot easier to do this in version 4.
It may be that this solution is not the best way of dealing with this, in which case I am sure one of the beta testers et al will correct me!
Hope this helps.
Andy
I believe the reason you didn't is because the collection came with the journals, but the collection was made. To make a collection is easy. Open collection, click new, give it a title "Journals". type "type:journals" in the rules box. close. your done.
Hi Larry.
Once you get used to it, you'll find the new way of making collections better. You're not stuck with the collections that Logos have predefined, but can make your own. You could, for example, make a "Favourite Journals" collection by using the ratings functionality (look it up in the help) to tag your favourites and then using "type:Journal and rating:>=3" (for example).
I was first introduced to Logos/Libronix when I purchased the Theological Journal CD many years ago and it is still one of my favorite references. One of the major learning curves with me on Logos 4 is in the area of collections. Under 3.0f it was very easy to name a collection and go through the initial process of adding each individual journal or book. My problem with 4.0 is that I don't the commands like type:journal to put it. I am trying to make a collection of BibSacs, JETS, etc... by doing a search on the specific title in order to minimize the amount of "extra" books I am getting in my list. I realize that I am going through another learning curve but where does one find out these "basic" commands like type:journal to begin with. I also had a collection of my apologetic material which included Geisler's library and a bunch of others. Any suggestions for getting his books as well as other individual books in a collection titled Apologetics? I guess I could do author:geisler but what about some other books that deal with creation, worldviews, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don,
The commands are simply the fields in the library. If you have your library open in detailed view you can see all the headings (Title, Rating, Publicatio date, Subject, Author, publisher, series, subject etc.) These are not only used to create collections, but it is how we now look for books in the library (kind of like a card catalog in an actual library) For instance, if I want a subjct, I can tyyp the subject, and arange my library by clicking on the subject field. You do the same thing with collections. You choose your field and use search operators to limit your collection. You could for example do author:oden AND subject:theology and your results would be oden's systematic theology. Try the video link below, and maybe that will help you.

I'm actually quite stunned that these resources lack proper abbreviated titles. I search for JETS - nothing, BibSac - nothing.
My first suggestion and one that will benefit you well beyond collections is to tag these journal series with what should be their collective abbreviated title (or one that you will remember.
Then you can set up your collection by simply writing JETS OR BibSac OR ....
Ken,
thanks for info. I am not able to spend a bit of time this week with 4.0 so I am still fumbling my way through things. I am also trying to resist the urge to go back and just "git r done" in the 3.0f environment I am familiar with. Like others on here who have expressed dismay, I did not realize that the 4.0 would be a entirely new way of doing things with the same resources. I was expecting a similiar jump like when I went from M.S Office 2003 to 2007 and I needed to find out where they hid everything. Fortunately I am in between classes so I can get adjusted to the new layout. I can not imagine going through Bible College or seminary now without Logos. Having so many resources on my computer completely eliminates the need to try to find a local theological library. And when I was in Ethiopia for a few years, there would have been no way to bring so many resources without taking up any more space. Thanks for the help.
Mark (or anyone),
Do you know if these Collection and Guide customizations are available with the L4 Engine-Only upgrade (not the Base Package Upgrade or the Minimal Crossgrade, just the engine)? I can't seem to get the Collection created using the L4 Engine-Only upgrade.
Thx.
Paul
Update: It looks like I can create the Collection (that is, the Collection"name" is there, but there are no journals that show up during the creation phase), but it's not showing up in my customized Passage Guide as an option to include.
Final Update: Never mind. I got it. I mistakenly used "type:journals" instead of using the singular.
Oops. It's still not showing up in my new Passage Guide Template.
Wonder about adding a Collections section, then click settings (on right side, appears when mouse hovers) and choose Journals:
Looking at Journals collection, noticed one volume had Job in name so choose a Passage from Job, then added a Collections section, changed All Resources to Journals. For screenshot, clicked on Settings for Collections section to show drop down menu (typed "J" to filter list).
Keep Smiling [:)]
Thanks. I think I got it--finally. Had to create the Collection, create a customized Passage Guide, Edit the Passage Guide to Add Collections and specify Journals.
Phew!
Thanks for the help. However, the more>>more>>more>> thing has got to go.
I agree. What you can do, if you want to put 10-15 minutes of setup towards it, is run the Cited by tool on the passage you want, navigate to the collection you want, expand it and click more. This will open up a search window. Click CTRL+p (print the search box) de-select the visible results only box, and export it to Word.
you will now have a fully expanded, hyperlinked Word document.
You can take this a step further (I haven't actually done this, I'm just trying to think creatively). Work through the search results in Word and delete the ones you don't want. Save it as a .doc file. Build it into a PB. Add it to a collection of other edited, PB search documents. Add a search for that collection to your Passage Guide. Now when you run a search for that PB will pop up under that section and give you an already edited list of valuable resources. I did briefly try this but couldn't get it to come up in the passage guide. That might be because of an indexing issue as my computer is downloading resources, so It might not have indexed my new PB.
