Personal Books

Hi Guys,

I really like the idea of Personal Books and it seems to work well with docx documents. However we as an organistion publish teaching manuals etc. and these are set up for publication in Adobe InDesign format and then sent to the publisher as pdf files.

Most of our stuff I might want to import to Logos would be in these two formats. Only very small documents are done in docx. Since we can't use pdf can we have access to the original indd files?

I am not sure I understand what you are asking... "can we have access to the original indd files?" Your organization has access to them now, correct? Or do you have someone else create them?

If you are asking if Logos can (or will be able to) read InDesign files the answer is no. First, Logos is using features within the .docx format to create the PB's. Second, why would Logos bother programming for an InDesign format when it is hard to believe even 5 percent of its users use InDesign (I am one of those users, by the way). It would be much more likely for them to expend effort to allow users to work with .doc or .pdf files (but don't hold your breath on that either).

I don't have InDesign with me right now (I'm on vacation), but I wonder what formats it can export to. Also, I wonder what would happen to one of your .pdf's exported to .doc (then exported to .docx).

I think you could make this as a suggestion under the Suggestion Forum, but I doubt you'd be able to convince Logos to produce a way to convert InDesign files to PBs. There would be a bunch of specific formatting issues that would have to be resolved. The complexity of doing the conversion would be significant. I know of no programs that can convert an .indd file to .docx. If you can find one, that is your best bet.

Thanks. I do have access to all the indd files - they are on my computer. I was just exploring the options which might interest me in relation to using Personal Books. It would have been nice to include some of the manuals in Logos 4. I had read elsewhere in the forum that pdf was not being considered. PDF would have been my first preference as formatting can't change then. I am talking about 60 page teaching manuals so exporting them to docx is more work than it is worth. By the way InDesign doesn't export to anything uselful in this context. Thanks anyway. Bill

could you not export it to HTML, then use word to open that file..

Hi Dominic, I can convert either the indd files or the pdf files into docx but the work involved just doesn't warrant going down that route. I do have a lot of teaching in the docx format it is just the published manuals etc which are indd/ pdf. Thanks, Bill

could you not export it to HTML, then use word to open that file..

InDesign does not support export to .html. Here's the list (for CS4, may have changed with CS5):

CS4 does support export to Digital Versions (.epub format). In another thread on ePub books there was a method explained to convert ePub to .docx format. That would be an export then a file conversion before getting into Word. Maybe it would work for you, maybe not.

PDF would have been my first preference as formatting can't change then.

I have become a bit of a snob in terms of wanting to see a good layout in print documents. It is a different story with eBooks. The text is designed to flow and change based upon the screen/panel size. If layout is important to you, Logos PBB is not the right choice for you. If having documents that are searchable within Logos 4 is what you most desire, PBB is great!

How many training manuals do you have? What is the nature of the manuals? Would anyone other than yourself benefit from them being in Logos? Do you charge for these manuals?

By the way, 60 pages is not very large compared to some other projects. Have you tried exporting the .pdf version to .doc? After that you save the .doc file to .docx. This process has worked fairly well for me on some other projects.
