Non-evangelical commentaries

Hello all.

I'm planning ahead a bit here, and need some advice. At the moment, most of my (paper and logos) library is reformed/evangelical, which is fine for most of my church and preaching work.

For some academic stuff I'm working through at the moment it would help to have some commentaries from other traditions - perhaps liberal, orthodox etc.

Can anyone recommend any suitable series? If I can buy them individually that would be a bonus (money is always an issue) but a well-priced series would also get serious consideration.

Hermeneia, Continental Commentary, Anchor Bible all come to mind as non-evangelical commentary series that Logos sells as sets.

For academic work, Hermeneia is at the top. While not commentaries, JBL and Logos' "Studies on ...." collections are also great resources for academic work.

You didn't say what you already had. But WBC is my favorite, backed up with Herm/Contintental.

WBC claims an evangelical label, but best I can figure, that's only for the last couple of sentences of respective sections. Otherwise, they give a fairly broad picture of the arguments. Hermenaeia is fine but doesn't have the same detail level. Continental might as well be a theological commentary.

When WBC/Hermenaeia don't provide a sufficient liberal point of view, then I have to move back a hundred years to the 1900s group.

I agree with Kevin on Hermeneia, Continental Commentary, Anchor Yale Bible. I would also add the Interpreter's Bible Commentary from Abingdon. Also, though it is not as extensive, the Interpretation Commentary is very good.

I don't think Word Biblical Commentary is quite as hard evangelical as one assumes.

The Abingdon titles are still in Pre-Pub and are not cheap: (but neither are AYB or Hermeneia/CC [:(] )
New Interpreter's Bible $800

Although these are not commentaries, they will shed a little light on the theology of Eastern Orthodoxy:

I do understand you are looking for non-Evangelical commentaries to broaden your horizons. I find it interesting some think "academic" and "evangelical" are mutually exclusive. It must be difficult to acknowledge the high scholarship of Gordon Fee or Norman Geisler. I think Word Biblical Commentary is a great value for your ministry but not near as liberal as Kevin's list
