The following was sent earlier to "suggest@logos.com":

I would like to see the New Life Translation available in Logos. A short history of the translation can be found here:

        http://www.bethelcollege.edu/academics/library/Archives/reflections/v5n2p13_17.pdf

This simple translation is published by Christian Literature International:  http://www.newlifebible.org/

Thank you for considering this request.

A short history of the translation can be found here:

            http://www.bethelcollege.edu/academics/library/Archives/reflections/v5n2p13_17.pdf

The history-pdf contains extracts of several well-known passages at the end.

Brother Floyd, I gotta tell you ... reading those extracts brought tears to my eyes.  Yes, the story behind the translation is a wonderful one, and a great testimony to this couples' hearts for God, but "the proof is in the pudding".

This pretty much amazes me, because generally speaking I'm unlikely to use or even recommend "paraphrased" or even some "dynamic equivalence" translations to people, unless English is a second language that they haven't mastered much, and there is not a good translation avail in their primary language.  I consider the NIV to be useful in places but marginal overall.  The HCSB is pretty good.  Amongst all the "simple language" translations, I've most often gravitated to the NLT.  Btw ... no intent to start any debates here - these have just been my preferences.  For my own study, or that of any of my "Timothies" or other students, I invariably recommend the purchase and regular use of all three: NKJV, NASB, ESV.  Sometimes I'll recommend also getting an NLT for those who haven't had ANY Bible background, so that they can read quickly through it to get the "big picture".

However, if the familiar-passage samples in this pdf are truly representative of the HEART (for lack of a better term) contained in the rest of the translation, this translation will likely become the "top of my list" for "paraphrased" Bibles ... especially for use with children and ESL groups.

THANK YOU for bringing it to my attention.  And, yes, it would be great to see it in the Libronix library.

I found this on the "for sale" shelf of my local library.  As a paperback book, it sold for 25 cents.  I had never heard of the translation - but after looking over the used version in my hands, I decided to purchase.  I figured if I had made a mistake, I had just made a donation to the library.  I too had tears in my eyes when I read the 23rd Psalm.  Everything I have seen or read indicates that it is worth my time and effort.  Though I have not done it yet, I have even had thoughts of buying a few copies (it is also shipped as just a NT) to use as gifts for some who I know are not strong readers.  It was a lucky find.

Thank you for supporting the recommendation.  I hope that you will write a note to "suggest@logos.com" in support as well.

    Blessings,

I agree with this, though the NLV really does have many problems in it's translation and I would never recommend it to most people for serious reading or study, we have found the New Life Version to occasionally be helpful in a translation project we consult for, the descriptive language is very helpful for trying to find simple ways to say things in a language we work with that has a much smaller vocabulary than English. Having it on logos would be helpful.

Wow, Jordan, I think you broke the record for oldest thread revived. This one was from 15 years ago!

But Logos still doesn't have the New Life Version.

These days, the best hope we have of getting them to pay attention to requests like this is to post them on the Logos Book Requests feedback board and then drum up support on the forums and ask people to vote for them.

Here is a request I've just added for this. Anyone interested, please go vote for it:

Holy Bible - New Life Version (New Life Bible)

    From Wikipedia:

"The New Life Version (NLV) of the Bible is a simplified English translation by Gleason and Kathryn Ledyard....

"The translation was born out of the Ledyards' missionary work in the Canadian Arctic to First Nations populations, who did not always speak English fluently. The NLV uses a limited vocabulary of about 850 words, not including proper names. This was done to make the text easier to read and understand, a goal that the Ledyards felt was not adequately met by existing English translations of the Bible.

"The NLV uses gender-specific language and uses no contractions. Confusing wording is avoided. Weights and measures are worded so that anyone can understand them; For example, Noah's ark is described as being: '...as long as 150 long steps, as wide as twenty-five long steps, and eight times taller than a man.'

"The translation of the New Testament was completed in 1969, and the complete NLV Bible with Old and New Testaments was first published in 1986."

In the meantime, there is this book which has some excerpts from the NLV, available as an eBook:

The Bible Promise Book - NLV
