Brief thoughts from a new user (seminarian).

I just began to use Logos in July, and so far it has been great. The school I am at suggested using either Logos or BibleWorks, since this looked like a more comprehensive product I went with it.
The exegetical studies were especially helpful during my Greek classes. I would, however, like to see more of the assigned course books made available through Logos. I realize that there is an incredible selection already and that more books are being added all the time. I also understand that there are hundreds of Seminaries just in North America and that keeping tabs on what each professor in every one of them is up to is an unreasonable expectation, but a little more attention toward this area of bible study would be very helpful, at least to me. Thanks for the great work, my comments are not meant as a criticism, but a suggestion (or even wish list).

Why don't you go ahead and suggest some titles / author names or share the whole list? This forum is monitored by Logos to find out about resources missing in their catalog - when people suggest these, especially when some others agree to the suggestion, they will try to negotiate this with the publishers and bring the books into Logos.

Hi Jim,

I too found Logos to be helpful with my biblical studies at Trinity in Columbus OH. I will also confirm that Logos does not publish many books that has help me with any of my other classes. Logos' selection of books on liberation theology, process theology, womanist theology, feminist theology, etc.. is basically non-existent.

In addition to suggesting titles to Logos, it's often helpful to approach publishers and encourage them to offer (more) titles in Logos. Sometimes resources don't exist simply because the publisher doesn't want to, or hasn't even considered electronic publishing through Logos. A letter or email to the publisher by you along with fellow students may get some attention. You could also try to drum up some support for an email campaign for a specific publisher on these forums. It's been done -- well, it was done in the old newsgroups (since replaced by these forums).

That's absolutely right, MJD. As we all have frequently been REMINDED, the decision is a monetary one.[A]

And that approach is well within the early Christian NT world, where apparently visiting evangelists (apostles) were in hot competition monetarily.

One sure way of going out of business is to produce a product no one
will buy. I'm sure you are not alone in wanting these resources. But
there is greater demand for other titles first. I personally would
consider buying these, as well as a book on Shaker theology. I still
have Crum's Coptic Dictionary listed among my Pre-Pub orders. With so
many other titles coming out, none of these are at the top of my list.

I've noticed the less demand there is for a Logos resource the higher
the price seems to be. Most academic or highly technical works can get
pricey after it leaves Pre-pub. Logos has to be convinced enough demand
exists to justify dedicating resources to producing that title over
others. The expense of production is the same whether there are 10,000
buyers or just 10. It makes sense to focus on the better sellers.

An alternative Logos has provided is the Personal Book Tool. I suppose a
person could add these books to their own library. If they are not worth
typing in maybe Logos made a wise decision not to bother.

It would be an interesting bit of historical speculation to hypothesize what the Western faith tradition would look like today if the Medieval monks decided only to produce what sold.

About the way it does today since that is precisely what they did. If there were no demand for what they produced, they would not have produced it.
