I am running Mac OS 10.5.8. Should Logos 4 run on this operating system?

I note KS4J's reply regarding your operating system - however just as jumping too quickly to a new system might give you teething problems so hanging on to a legacy system will eventually lead to the pains of old age.

Many are clamouring for the facilities provided by Lion to be included in the current version of Logos. As these features become available they are bound to impact on the performance of older systems - not the computer but the software itself.

Is there a reasons that you have decided to stick with a legacy operating system - one of the advantages of owning a Mac is controlled environment that software runs in and one of the only ways of stretching that arrangement is to hold on to old versions of software.

Thanks for your questions. I am a relatively new Mac user(2 years), and because of my experience with Windows, I have hesitated to upgrade to Snow Leopard. My only motivation for upgrading is Logos 4. If my OS is making Logos crash, I can upgrade to the newer OS. Otherwise, I am satisfied with the way Mac OS 10.5.8 runs.

Lion is definitely worth the move. However... having said that with Lion you need to consider the hardware you are currently running on. Lion will only run on (reasonably recent) Macs capable of running in 64bit mode. You can find details on the Apple website whether your machine is OK. Also there is point that there is 64bit application mode and 64bit kernel (core of OS) mode.

Leopard was 32bit, Snow Leopard was optional 32/64, Lion is 64bit only. This link has info

also note that some machines (as I discovered with my previous MacPro) do not have boot firmware which support running the kernel in 64bit mode (even though they can still run Lion), see comment in this link.

So you need to do your homework before jumping to Lion. Being a technical person, and not wanting upgrade hassles, I ended up buying new iMac with Lion preinstalled - runs Logos 4 Mac fine. I have also upgraded a number of older machines from Snow Leopard to Lion with no problems.

No Michael - I am with Alabama here being (far) behind on the Mac is not a good idea.

The advantage of Windows is that you can do anything you like with it - the whole operating system is your oyster and you are free to mess with it to your hearts content.

The advantage of the Mac is that you can do anything Apple lets you do with it. For most people who want to do 'work' this is a tremendous bonus. Apple bring out regular updates and security fixes and the 'Apple Community' tend to talk the same language.

It is easy to see how keen Apple for users to keep in step by the way they have priced both the Snow Leopard and Lion updates - compared with Windows these have been supplied for peanuts. Apple don't really want to be employing people to work on outdated systems - they want everybody to be using the most modern and efficient systems.

Observation: Snow Leopard removed older PowerPC code so Mac OS X needs fewer GB's for installation plus Snow Leopard is noticeably faster than Leopard (in many applications).

OS X Lion added/enhanced features (about 250) so may want to consider Mac hardware upgrade.

I think that the importance of updating your OS has been a little bit overblown. I don't think that you NEED to do so. In my opinion, however, it is easier to keep up to date and learn a little as you go, rather than to take mega leaps every 4-5 years.

If you have an iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone, Lion will have a similar look and feel. Full screen apps are REALLY nice.

Another thing that you are missing by not upgrading is the new Mac App Store. Apple is no longer selling any boxed software programs. If you want to update iWork or iLife, you will have to get Lion and download them. Other (non Apple) programs as well are available on the App store. It is nice to purchase an app on your laptop and have it automatically download on your desktop. The App Store also keeps your apps up to date.

Thanks, I wish it was just a sore arm from holding my camera (although I do that enough recording church events). Nope, I fell very heavily onto a 6cm steel pole at a New Wine convention (after the first meeting!) five weeks ago and smashed up my shoulder (upper arm) badly. Recovery going to take a long time. Ah well...
