iPad purchase

Thinking about buying an iPad. At home I use a PC with Logos but understand that my library can be used on an iPad without any difficulties. I also understand the limitations with the iPad and Logos program. What size iPad would you recommend? Thanks!

    Hi David,

    Welcome to the Logos forum.

The amount of memory you get will depend upon how much content you want to store on the device. Aside from downloading Logos resources to the iPad, do you have a large music library? Movies, pics, etc.?

For a lot of people 32GB is the sweet spot. I got 64GB and mine is half full with all of my Logos resources (which, by the way, you have to download one by one), music and pics.

    David -

    First, welcome to the forums!

First, you should be aware that most resources, but not all, are available on mobile devices. If you look at the resource product page on the Logos website, there will be an iPhone icon under the book cover if it is available. As for size (I assume you mean storage capacity)... It really does not matter unless you need to download every book. The way the app is designed to work, most resources are downloaded on the fly. This is problematic, however, if you don't have a good internet connection.

David, Welcome!  I had the advantage of having had a 32 gig itouch, and a 32 gig Iphone before I got my Ipad. I knew that I would want about 30 of my 1800 books on my devices and that the app with only 30 books takes up a very small amount of space.  I currently have about 1000 songs, 13 full length movies, and over 400 apps with the 30 books on my 64 gig ipad... and I still have about 13.5 gig free.  In other words, it comes down to what you want to put on your ipad, but more than likely a 32 gig is more than you need... 64 gig is really nice in that you will virtually never run out of space.

I went with the 64gig - each full length movie is about 4 gig. An english county at 1:25000 is about half a gig. 1500 songs about 10gig. It soon adds up and Logos is not likely to be your biggest use when you actually find out the other things that it is capable of.

    Hi Alabama24

OK, MIke. I have to know. What is an "english county?"

Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counties_of_England for some context.

I assume (though am not sure) that Mike is referring to the picture of a county

I think it's a map of the county at the scale 1:25000.

Half a gig for a MAP???

    You made me do it:

Cumbria (random largish English county) = 6,768 sq km
    assuming a square county, 82 km/side = 3,228,346 inches/side
1:25000 ratio map of Cumbria would be 129 inches/side
    at 72 pixels/inch = 9288 pixels per side
    = 86,266,944 total pixels
at 4 bytes per pixel = 382,205,952 bytes or 0.382 GB uncompressed
and since the county isn't square the map would have to be larger to contain it.
    or perhaps ~ 0.5 GB.

A bit like Texas - just a tad smaller.

So if I understand correctly, you have downloaded a detailed map (instead of using an online map company). Is that right?

This is a digitised version of our national mapping which you can download and use for hill trekking where there is no cellular signal. They are called 'Ordnance Survey Maps' A county (or in Scotland a region's) worth is about half a gig.

As Church of Scotland ministers are responsible for every soul in their parish knowing just where those souls are is very important.

By the way - if you are passing just head for the blue dot and ask anybody - it would be nice to have you round for coffee.

Fantastic.  Is it by any chance free?  or not too expensive?

If I ever find myself near the blue dot, I'll know where to go!

I tend to download from google...

Thanks so much for your responses! Except for the geography lessons (LOL), I got the information needed to make the right  decision. On the side, this is the first time I've ever used a post to get information and I'm glad to see it actually works. The "english country" discussion was informative and fun.

Check out Apps called 'Outdoors XXX' in my case its 'Outdoors UK with National Parks'. County Maps at 1:50000 are about £10 and those at 1-25000 about £40.

I know this is in competition with logos 'Biblical Places' but my house hasn't featured on the their radar yet. :-)

Thanks for info.  I'll stick to google for the moment.  It's cheaper AND it shows my house!

Is your house unbiblical, that it doesn't feature in Biblical Places?

I have a 32 Gig iPad.  Currently I have downloaded about 2,000 Logos resources, about 30 other books (Kindle, Nook, Kobo, iBooks, etc.), about 300 songs (mp3), about 4 full length movies and 9 old TV programs, 3 games, about 50 photos, a number of documents, email, and a bunch of junk I need to delete, and about 70 apps. I still have about 7 gig free.  I could easily delete and free about 10 gig without missing a thing, or removing a single Logos resource.

32 Gig was about right for me.  I seldom would want more than 4 full length movies at the time, and have plenty of room for all the Logos resources that I want.

Glad we could help in a small way.

Thank you for forgiving some of us our flights into the surreal - it comes from a lively clash of culture and use of language - which is good fun but does lead us to divert from the main purpose of the thread.
