purchasing L4, but using Libronix

With all the talk about using L3 and L4 simultaneously, does it only apply to people that had L3 before?  Is it possible to purchase a L4 package and simply install and use L3 instead.

Why in the WORLD would one do it?

  • L3 runs smoother on older hardware
  • many features of L3 are still incomplete or missing in L4
  • inadequate functionality of PBB in foreign languages
  • internet access is limited in most of the word
  • bandwidth charges are per Mb and are more expensive (than in the US) in most of the world

    Yes it is possible.

Because L4 and L3 handle licenses differently (L3 can use a license file, L4 syncs to the internet) you'll have to call customer service and they'll email you the L3 license file.

I would also chose the DOWNLOAD option.  Then you can download just the files (books) you want or do not alreadly have.

Also everything will be on the logos site (under your account and orders) and easy to download as you wish.

No. I for example didn't have either of those until February and now use L4 and (to some minimal extent) L3

Is it possible to purchase a L4 package and simply install and use L3 instead.

Sure. But I would never use L3 instead of L4 (there may be some users who like it this way, though)

Why in the WORLD would one do it?

    1. L3 runs smoother on older hardware
    2. many features of L3 are still incomplete or missing in L4
    3. inadequate functionality of PBB in foreign languages
    4. internet access is limited in most of the word
    5. bandwidth charges are per Mb and are more expensive (than in the US) in most of the world

I numbered your bullets for commenting:

Re 1: may be - L4 runs smooth enough on my Acer Extensa, didn't see L3 to be faster in search or building a guide, thus that's not an issue for me.

Re 2: not many, but a small number remains. Old Sermon Add-in (which I don't have), old PBB (dito, but replaced by L4 PB which I can use - thanks Logos!) and Vocabulary Lists (which I use sometimes and which is the only functional feature in L3 I'm missing in L4) are the only ones known to me.

Re 3: if you have foreign language PBBs in L3 (or build them yourself) and a PBB licence... but what you didn't mention is the foreign language user interface: while L4 exists in English, Spanish and (for whatever reason) Swedish, there are a bunch of different languages you may run L3 in. Not a relevant point for me, but for quite a number of SESB users. This point may go away if foreign language UIs were part of Logos 4.x (or SESB 4.0, for that matter, which is announced for November)

Re 4 /5: Imho, 5 is just a less restrictive variation of 4. Really no access to the internet at all would preclude using L3 as well as L4 - you couldn't activate your licences. If you were in reach of the internet sometimes, but mostly not, then it's not a real point for L3. Assuming someone were to go from Western Europe or the US to at a remote location without internet access (jungle, china, heavy islamist country) - L3 as well as L4 would continue to run on their machine. I understand that many users simply buy a package and never care to invest into their library again (we forum users are a different breed, hunting for new resources in CP, PrePub and all the Logos sales events).

If access/the bandwith/cost allows for activation and licence synchronization, but not for resource transfer, my understanding is that L4 would work as well by using "scan [drive/path]" or copying resource files from a CD-ROM (but I have never tried to use L4 in this way).

However, the probably most relevant aspect for me why I'm running L3 in parallel to L4: Ease of activation of older Libronix resources which are available from publishers and third parties. Just run the installer and then sync licences, L4 will take care of its update by itself, internet access assumed.

To get resources into L3 you have to download Logos 3 (.lbxlls) versions of files that are in the logos4 format (.logos4) - at least 5 GB with my Scholar's Silver library + other purchases. You can copy any lbxlls resources that are in the L4 Resources folder.

    I've been spoiled.

As Has now been pointed out - downloading the files manually for L3 will be necessary.

Thanks guys for taking up my slack.

Also still missing is the ability to build your own timelines.[:(]

Maybe we will get this back someday.

This was my reason for loading Libronix after I had originally purchased Logos 4.

Peace!                             and Joy in the Lord to all!

Sometimes I like to open my L3 just for the sheer pleasure of listening to the opening music.

Truly wish that L4 had the whole tune!  Maybe down the road they could put that in at least as an option.

(Sorry for the nostalgia: however it is a glorious autumn in this part of the Northern Hemisphere, and I am very pleasantly disposed.

Also, I remember hearing about the grafitti on the wall of the New York City subway station -- "Nostalgia ain't what it used to be!")

                                          *smile*

Philippians 4:  4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand..........
