Greetings,

I am doing a word search in my Hebrew bibles on the word hesed. I put  my Hebrew bibles in a collection then did an entire bible search for the word and it returned 6 occurrences in 2 resources. This would be fine if it were true. I am aware that this word occurs many more times in the text, an important eg. which fails to appear is Hosea 6:6 quoted by Christ in Matt 9:13. Can anyone steer me towards the right approach? Why does this search not return all the relevant occurrences?

Thanks

That may be correct depending upon which homonym you used.  There are several instances of חֶסֶד  in the OT.

    חֶסֶד -- verb, "to bring shame" 1x
    חֶסֶד -- noun, "shame", "abuse" 2x
חֶסֶד -- noun, "loyalty", "faithfulness", "proof of mercy" 249x
    חסד -- adj, "loyal" 2x
חסד -- verb, "to act as a חָסִיד "to be loyal" 2x

I dont know Hebrew, thus I worked this backwards: from the ESV RI into the BHS, then searched for the Lemma in this resource: 245 results in 239 OT verses

This way, Logos built for me the search string for the bible search. Hope this helps,

Thank you very much Newbie Mick. This is an approach I had not considered and it should return more satisfactory information. I do not have the BHS, but it should still work. Thanks again.

Thanks very much for your reply. How do I enter this information. I simply entered in english: hesed?

Assuming you have some resource which shows the Hebrew (even the unspeakable interlinear), you can enter an "h" for Hebrew with a colon followed by the consonants of the word ("h:hsd") and it will give you a pick list.

You can do it without the BHS using just a reverse interlinear if you hav eone:

    1. Go to Hosea 6:6 and right click to bring up menu

    2.  Click Lemma in the list of option on the right hand side

    3. On the left hand side choose serach this resource

    4.  List of results will display.

Noticed Bible Search for Hebrew hesed homonym 1 in BHS SESB 2.0 (and BHS/WIVU), which is tagged as hesed homonym 2 in BHS with Westminster 4.2 Morphology, Lexham Hebrew-English Interlinear (LHI), Hebrew Bible: Anderson-Forbes Analyzed Text (AFAT), and Logos Reverse Interlinear Bibles.  BHS with Westminster 3.5 and 4.0 Morphology does not have a homonym number for hesed in Hosea 6:6.

To search all homonyms, can do a Bible search using Hebrew transliteration to enter word (h:hesed) and choose from drop down list:

    Ahhh,

The Bright Light of Truth has shined. Many thanks. Silly me I initially tried "he" then "heb" before resigning myself to the simple english entry. All is now well George. Blessings to you!

In this case, one would need to search all the entries in the drop-down list that appears when h:hesed is entered, right?

Thus I understand your 122 verses are just those were hesed is written with the punctuation shown in your search string (it finds e.g. Jonah 4:2 but not Jonah 2:8), whereas the lemma searches we performed get the equivalent of "search all word forms", but restricted to the homonym numbers contained in the morphology, yes?

EDIT: searching all homonyms would then be the same as searching for <HebrewStrongs = Strong’s Hebrew #2617> which finds 247 results in 241 verses in the textbase of the ESV (i.e. 2 results in two verses more than the homonym search)?

    Yes. Try:-

    lemma:חסד.1 OR lemma:חסד.2 OR lemma:חסד.3 OR lemma:חסד.4

    If you try:

    lemma:*חסד

you discover that it has 1 more result in LHI, AFAT because 1 Chron 3:20 has חסד as part of a name.

Match All Word Forms and Match Case do not apply to original language searches. The homonyms are a specific meaning/use of the word, rather like English "well".
