OK, you Syriac'ers ... Gorgias is shipping; Diatesseron!

- You probably already have the NT peshitta along with a syriac analytical lexicon (mine came with Original Languages). The lexicon is quite useful, since it shows the lexical use among the syriac versions. Since it's an analytical lexicon it has every form so you can right click any of the words in syriac. Generally I end up in the NT peshitta when there's a variation on the greek side and I want to see what the Peshitta was (at least the one we have up till now). Often a commentary references the peshitta as well. I've been studying Eph 4:9 where the Targums and Peshitta were important.

- The Gorgias collection contains a literal translation of the NT peshitta, making it a little easier going. Of course the other resources in this collection are of greater interest (Diatesseron, dictionary, etc). Note that the first resource listed on Logos.com is in syriac; not english.

- The Leiden Peshitta is the more important one, since it covers the OT, apocrypha and NT along with some limited apparatus. It's in syriac. I mainly wanted the OT here, since the Peshitta OT had overlaps with some of what appears in the Targums, mainly in the Penteteuch. Last week I got a set of the Aramaic Bible english translations / apparatus (hardcopy), and was somewhat stymied when wanting to move into Logos and the Peshitta.

- With the Leiden OT you'll now have an MT, Dead Seas scrolls varients, a good LXX with apparatus, plus the Targums (along with Mishnah and Talmuds). The Leiden was one of (my) big missing pieces (along with the Samaritan).

- With Gorgias NT syriac translation in Logos, and the soon to be released Coptic (thus 2 english versions, 2 coptic plus a greek), you'll then also have the greek papyri, plus the major greek text forms. The only major pieces missing then would be the big greek manuscripts (Vatican, etc), plus maybe some of the early latin. Not too bad, and catching up with A-company.

- Of course the recent Perseus expands on the papyri, etc but I haven't dug in yet to see how much will be helpful to me personally.

I might add on usefulness, of course it depends on your interests. Mine mainly center around the NT text as it moved south (coptic), east (syriac), west (latin), and of course the greek itself (in addition to further east ... armenia, etc).

So you're saying I should drop $180 on this Gorgias set and $50 on the soon-coming Leiden Peshitta, and I'll have the major NT and OT texts - Hebrew, Greek and Syriac (and Latin since I have the Vulgate). And these will be great advances on the Peshitta I currently have in Logos (that came with Scholars/Gold/Platinum, which I have)?

I don't know Coptic. The letters look Greek - are they pronounced as Greek letters?

Do I need to order any Coptic resources while I'm feeling profligate? Which ones?

I just got the Duke Database, and a BUNCH of those volumes came up when I typed "Coptic" in my library search box.

You'll notice Logos has graciously reduced the Sahidic collection by $40 if I remember right (last weekend's noisy discussion).

I'm assuming you know there's two major versions of coptic (Sahidic / Bohairic) plus a lesser third (not in Logos). In any event, I doubt you want to trouble yourself learning coptic, so the pre-pub Sahidic literal english would work well and inexpensive. You could easily match it against a greek literal (Youngs, etc) and of course the above literal english Peshitta translation for a good comparison.

Also notable is an Egyptian greek back-translation of the Sahidic. That is really useful if you're wanting to work in greek, and match up greek versions (of course any variences you'd want to look at the Sahidic itself). The greek back-translation of course shows up in the word studies.

Again, being able to consider for yourself the NT variences (and OT above), allows you to 'follow along' in the other Logos resources, especially where a tight reading is involved. Hall Harris on Eph 4:9 above makes the argument that it tracked to the Targumic background in Psalms and then showed up again relative to Peter's speech on Pentecost (Christ delivering the law's replacement). The latter in Acts is really interesting, since my other syntactic pattern analyses suggest the Acts speeches are not as contrived as some scholars imply.

It looks like the Sahidic Collection is (again?) pretty close to its retail price of $98 - only a ~$9 saving. Not much incentive to buy it right now.

Horner's Sahidic edition is on sale for $20 (versus $35 regular price). And the Bohairic set is only $35. It sounds like I should get these two and not worry about the Sahidic Collection, even though it's apparently much improved over Horner's.

Yeah, the current prepub price is the same as the original prepub price. And that is a fantastic price. This is a critical edition, like the Gottingen LXX, NA27, or BHS, that has been 50 years in the making.

Okay, it appears that by ordering Gorgias and Leiden I've massively and cheaply improved my Syriac texts at pre-pub prices, and by ordering the 2-vol Bohairic collection and the $20 old Sahidic translation I've cheaply improved my Coptic text resources.

Correct?

Is there any reason to jump on the 9% off Sahidic Collection for $90? Saving $9 versus spending another $90 I don't have or need to spend doesn't seem urgent.

Personally, I think you're good to go. Coptic really comes into play where the critical 'rules' start to come apart, especially when dealing with what's been termed the 'western text'. Since I'm no copti-holic, the greek back-translation was my favorite (I really like back-translations; they highlight textual concepts that run into trouble in the translation).

They wouldn't raise the price again now, would they? Now you have me thinking I should jump on the $90 price. Tighten my belt for another couple months, but be locked in with enough Coptic resources to learn and read until Jesus comes back, even if He delays for many, many years.

P.S. I called Logos, and since the Retail Prices on the 3 individual volumes are $32.99 each, they said the 3-set collection won't go above $98.97.
