I'm new to Logos.  I'm an iMac owner and wanted to get the Logos software, but don't know what to get.  I'd like a good Greek component to it with maybe Gerhart Kittel, Nigel Turner, Richard Trench and Joseph Thayer plus maybe a Septuagint, the Ante-Nicene Fathers and Luthers Works.  I'm not really interested in the devotional, maps, illustrations functions.

What Logos package is closest to what I'm looking for?  And can I add what is not included from some other source.

I'm basically a Snow Leopard guy so I'm still running 10.6.8.  Does anyone see any problems?

Thanks for your time!

Ron

    No.

If you are solely interested in languages & cost, you can go for the original languages base package and add what else you want. However, most base packages build upon one another - the original languages package is on a different scale (it adds language resources that more expensive packages have but takes away other things which lower packages include). Many prefer to begin with the scholars library. I have the platinum package. If you want to compare the packages, CLICK HERE.

And can I add what is not included from some other source.

I am not sure what you mean. If you are wanting to add resources which logos does NOT carry ("some other source"), you can try to use the new Personal Book Builder. If you are asking if you can add to a base package piece by piece, the answer is yes, although it is generally more expensive to do so over the long haul.

Is there a dollar line your trying not to cross?

One thing I would do right now if I were your shoes would be to create an account in Logos and sign up for the purseus resources. it sound's like something you wont want to miss. right now they are free, and if I understand things correctly they will not even be available in a couple of days. Once you do get Logos and they are ready for you to download they'll download automatically. Let us know if you have any questions. Sign up for them at the below sites.

Well, I was just approved for the academic discount which promises deep discounts though I don't know how "deep" the discounts are.  I can spend $300-$400 now if I get a good program or a good foundation on which to add later on.  So my interest is primarily research and to a less extent expository.  I would not care for Ironside commentaries but would care for Kenneth Wuerst or Vincent or maybe evenb John Robinson because they go into the Greek.  I also wonder how in depth the historical resources are (more would be better.)

Is the Perseus collection completely compatible with the Logo IV software for Mac?

I assume I can write my own notes within the prograrm for any particular verse?

    Yes.

    Welcome [:D]

Do any classes require Logos ? (best academic discount)

One option is purchasing a base package now (e.g. Original Languages), then upgrade later to Scholar's Platinum that includes BDAG and Robertson's "Grammar of the Greek New Testament in the Light of Historical Research".   Scholar's Gold and above include my favorite commentary series; Wiki Logos Resource Reviews => UBS New Testament Handbook Series and => UBS Old Testament Handbook Series  Scholar's Silver and above include Early Church Fathers (includes Ante-Nicene among 37 volumes).  Scholar's and above includes Kenneth Wuest Word Studies volumes.

Wiki Logos Resource Reviews => Lexham Discourse Greek New Testament is another Greek resource to consider (not part of any base package).

Logos software is free, pay for resource licenses to use in your Library (optionally on many devices for your use).

Another option is a Logos payment plan that charges $ 5 per payment (without interest).  For big purchases (e.g. Scholar's Platinum), can spread out payments up to 12 months; have option to pay off early (avoid some $ 5 per monthly payment charges).

I assume I can write my own notes within the prograrm for any particular verse?

Yes, plus can create Personal Books.

    Keep Smiling [:)]

OK....i'm downloading the free Logos IV platform as I type this. I see the Perseus bundles that say $0.  However, when I click on it I get a form asking for my credit card info.  How do I know if I sign up for 2-3 bundles at $0 each I won't find a whopping $3,600.00 charge on my credit card next week?

Logos is a reputable company.  They don't add spurious charges to your credit card.  The CC info is required to create an account, but zero dollar transactions don't charge your card.

Additionally Logos offers an unconditional 30 money back guarantee. If you got it and decide you don't want it you'll get 100% of your money back.

I did not intend to imply that I was distrustful of Logos.  Logos is a very new website and concept to me and I was concerned I might be drawing the wrong conclusions, i.e. overlooking other important information, or believing a product was free when I may have overlooked some disclaimer stating that other charges apply.  How can they offer such collections at no charge?

I'd be Leary/cautious too if I didn't know the company. If someone is asking me for my credit card information, you better believe I'm gonna double/triple check the company.

    That I don't fully know.

I don't think there are any royalty issues here. The cost to Logos may be only in personnel (man hours) and web hosting. These are not insignificant, but these resources will be attractive to many new users. In a way, it is part of their promotion budget.

The Perseus works are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 United States License. which allows for free distribution of the content, and in fact requires that it be distributed for free.

    Greetings to you too Ronald.

And you will have found that the inquisitive and helpful have responded to your post.

They really are a nice lot.

May I make a small point however, 'Hi Everyone' is not the most helpful tittle for a thread - and it will not help anyone who has issues similar to yours.

When you next post it would be more productive to outline the main concern in the title e.g. Problems with Collections, or Home Page not responding, etc.

In particular if you find something that you think might be a bug preface your title with Bug:

    tootle pip
