HELP WITH BUDGET PLANNING

I intend to apply for a grant in biblical studies. In the budget justification, I would like to add Logos. As far as I can see, the Platinum is 4290 $. My question is: could you please tell me what will be the expenses for a period of five years? (purchase: 4290 $; Upgrading? Other?... etc.).

Michael, Platinum Base Package is $1,689.95 USD. If you are a student (or a teacher), you can apply for the Academic Discount and get it even much cheaper than that. I hope it helps.

With Logos you are not charged for support or for software upgrades. The ongoing expense is only the optional purchase of additional resources of use to you as they become available.

Hello Michael,

First, Platinum is $1689.95, not $4290. That higher price is for Portfolio. If this is your first purchase of Logos, you probably shouldn't start with Portfolio from the beginning. Give yourself some time to see whether you like the value of Platinum. Upgrading to Portfolio later would cost little more than the difference between the two packages.

Second, have you checked with Logos Academic Sales to see if your university qualifies for a discount for you when you purchase Logos? If it's a well-known university, it probably does. The academic discount is substantial, so it's worth looking into.

Once you have purchased your base package, there will be no necessary costs over the next five years. Tech support is free. Software upgrades are free. The only thing you'd ever need to pay for would be more resources for your library if you needed them. Platinum is a very good solid reference library for a biblical scholar, but you might end up wanting some more specialized dictionaries, journals, commentary sets, videos, etc. It's hard to help you estimate a budget for what any additions you might decide to buy for your library might cost. Logos has a huge catalogue of books. You might ask people to recommend what resources they consider "must have" resources for a biblical studies scholar that aren't already part of Platinum. My top choices would be the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary and the Essential IVP Reference Collection. One or two additional scholarly commentary sets beyond the ones included might be useful, perhaps either NICOT/NICNT, WBC or Hermeneia, depending on your theological viewpoint (see http://www.bestcommentaries.com for recommendations). Since you're studying in Israel, you might want to beef up the Jewish Studies areas of your library, perhaps something from the Jewish Publication Society. Also check out the Judaica Product Guide. For each item in that list, you'll need to click on it and then check in the box on the right to see if it's already included in the base package you're planning to get. Other resources you might want will depend on your theological leanings, areas of focus in your studies, etc.

So, it's going to take some homework on your part to figure out a budget. But hopefully we can be of help in recommending resources.

You will want to add additional resources. Platinum is a great base package, but you will certainly want to add to it as time goes by. What those additional resources would be depends upon the needs of each individual.

For me it meant the NICOT / NICNT at over $1000, Word Biblical Commentary at over $600, Tyndale Commentaries at about $150. I also want a top quality Bible Dictionary, such as the AYBD for about $250.

There are many other resources that I have wanted and bought over the years - Wesley, Spurgeon, Calvin's Commentaries, Luther, William Barclay, etc. It just depends on how much you love and use books in your study.

No one can tell you exactly how much you will need for Logos resources over the next five years. It depends upon your needs and how your are studying. But I am sure you will spend more than you expect. At least I certainly have.

Through Logos it is possible to have a theological library that most of never dreamed we could afford.
