Correct me if I am wrong but I don't see the WIVU database as an option for syntax searching. Any ideas?

    Wow. That's amazing.

Alan finally got input after 3 years.

And no answer on WIVU after 3 years.

That's even more amazing (actually not; Logos KNOWS not to promise ANYTHING since of course that means they'd need to actually DELIVER). Llike other businesses.

But yes, the 'Best Software Ever Written'  STILL happily does WIVU searches with wild abandon. 'Libby' was so thrilled with the thread yesterday on more AF-search guidance. Now 'there's' an answer. From South Africa too (I guess).

This is just a general comment for all the fine folk who post on these fora... for tose of us who are not as knowledgeable as the rest, in order to help us learn, could you all make sure the first time you use an abbreviation or acronym, make sure to tell us what it is. For example... what is WIVU?

Oh Carmen, why did you HAVE to ask THAT question?  I had to open 2 windows just to type this: Werkgroep Informatica, Vrje Univerisiteit (WIVU).

It's a morphology scheme associated with BHS (Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia). It came with SESB (Stuttgarter Elektronische Studienbibel), and in Libronix, they made a special search panel for it.

But you're right ... I had to bring it up from the library to remember what it stood for.

There's also that Richter morphology that I was promised with my base package two years ago: "Files coming soon". Perhaps, if they're lucky, Christ comes back "very soon", so they never have to deliver all those things that were only promised "soon". [:P] (Or is that unlucky for them? Perhaps Christ objects more to unfulfilled promises than even we do? [^o)])

There are actually three WIVU data bases in Logos:

    1. WIVU Constituency Tree Analysis
    2. WIVU syntactical database
    3. WIVU morphological database

(WIVU syntactical database does not 'currently' function in Logos4, but the Constituency Tree Analysis is still viewable. And, the WIVU morphological database is included in the Logos4 Original Language Base-package, all of Scholars Base-packages, and of course platinum.)

We, have been given advance notice about the WIVU database:

The German Bible Society will be releasing upgrades for the WIVU Syntactical databases for users who have licensed the SESB, and those upgrades will be made downloadable through the Logos website. It, isn't clear if this will be before Logos5 is released or after, but it is coming and those who licensed the SESB have been contacted (by private E-mail) and informed of the Germany Bible Societies current  agreement with Logos on these matters.

Great news BK ... I assume the 'we' is Logos?

Did they speak to Logos4/5 full support or is this mainly just a database update?

    Hello DMB,
here is the e-mail that was sent out to all the registered SESB license holders back in March:

    SESB – INFORMATION

    March 2012
    =================================================================

    Dear XXXXXXXXXX,
As a user of the Stuttgarter Electronic Study Bible (SESB) you certainly know and appreciate the benefits of this unique Bible software.
We regret having to inform you that our development partner Logos will restrict support for the SESB platform Libronix 3 by the end of March 2012.
This also affects the available modules for Libronix 3.
What does this mean for you?

Of course you can still use your SESB. Since there will be no further SESB-versions following, there are two options for you:
further use of the SESB based on Libronix 3 or moving to Logos 4 (details will follow later in this e-mail).
The German Bible Society will support the Logos platform and provide download modules in the future.
If you have any questions regarding the use of your SESB, we will be happy to assist you.
    Sincerely,
    the SESB-Team

    I. Modules for Libronix 3

Please note that on 31 March 2012 Logos will stop the sale of Libronix 3 download-modules.
Therefore, please use the last opportunity to purchase modules for the Libronix 3 platform in the next few weeks.

All download-modules that have been published before the end of 2011 are compatible with Libronix 3.
You’ll find an overview of the Libronix-compatible modules here:
    http://www.logos.com/L3/support/libronix-resources

Separately purchased Libronix 3 download-modules can also be used with Logos 4 afterwards.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

II. How can I still use my SESB content in the future?

    1. Further use of Libronix 3

Currently there is no need to migrate from Libronix 3 to Logos 4, if you can use the SESB without any difficulty. Benefits of the SESB and Libronix 3 are:

    - user interface in several languages as French/Dutch/Spanish e.g.
    - lower hardware requirements

We can’t guarantee that the SESB will also be running on future Windows operating systems.

Because of the restricted support and development of Libronix 3, problems could occur with installations on new operating systems.

You can upgrade from Libronix 3 to Logos 4 any time.

Separately purchased Libronix 3 download-modules can also be used with Logos 4 afterwards.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

    2. Moving to Logos 4

Logos 4, which currently is only available with an English user interface, offers the following advantages:

    - support and development by Logos
    - new download-modules only on Logos 4
    - also available for Mac OS X Lion

Please note: the WIVU-database for syntactic search functions in the BHS is currently not working with Logos 4.
The German Bible Society is working on a solution, which will be submitted via automatic update.

A free Logos-account which is required for transition to Logos 4, can be created by you at www.logos.com.

Send an e-mail with a request for synchronization of your Libronix-customer-account with the Logos-account to customerservice@logos.com.

The Logos customer support will need the following data from you:

    - SESB/Libronix-customer-account (in most cases associated with your SESB registration e-mail address).
    - The user name of your Logos.com account.

After synchronization by Logos the contents of your SESB and so far separately purchased Libronix 3 download-modules will be associated with your Logos-account
and will be available after installation and logging in at Logos 4.

The logos 4 platform is available in different variants.
In addition to three fee-based packages, there is also a free installer under option 4.

    Let, me explain.

Let's say you would like to search for all the places in the Hebrew Bible where someone starts a conversation with God, not simply replying to God.  Or, you hear the claim that God is the always the subject of the verb 'bara'(create/ form/ mold), but you decide you'd like to find out for yourself. What, type of tool would you use?

The type of tools that you would use would be Syntactical databases. These are databases that have words, phrases, sentences, and clauses tagged with grammatical and syntactical information. These tools make it possible to check the claims of Grammar books, and theological commentaries.

This in a nutshell is the type of tool we are talking about on this tread.

    BK,

somehow your strange courier-font (it reminds me of learning to use a mechanic typewriter as a child...) goes beyond  the visible textbox but doesn't come up with a scrollbar. This means, the most relevant parts of the mail are off-screen! Thus, maybe a repost is in order:

Thanks, I've tried to fix to the post so that nothing runs of the screen.

    Thank you, BK!

I guess I'm not registered (something I almost always avoid, though here it would be useful).

It's unfortunate somewhere in the development of Bible resources, that 'morphology' and 'syntax' somehow got split up in peoples' minds. In grammar school, both are taught simultaneously though with simpler names. I'd suspect someone new to this whole area would view 'syntax' (sentence/idea construction) as the more important issue.  But 'morphology' is the simpler to display and look for in early software searches.

From a more technical point of view, in looking at the aging of the text and writer signatures, the 'syntax' is far more stable than the morphology (meaning pattern-matching software can identify a source far quicker looking at construction of ideas as opposed to the vocabulary for those ideas). Unfortunately 'syntax' is viewed as more judgmental, as if early language morphologies were stable over time. And so I really like the Andersen-Forbes team, if only for their attitude.

In my grammar school in the early 1970's they were taught separate. I vaguely remember questioning why "parts of speech" are different than "parts of a sentence." i.e. the SUBJECT is always a NOUN or PRONOUN, but a noun is not always a subject and VERB is a part of Speech, but PREDICATE is a part of a sentence. I am mindful that the way I was taught English in the midwestern United States may not be the same way English is taught in other locations. But this foundation has enabled me to grasp Latin, Spanish, Greek and Hebrew later in my educational career.
