I know that "A defense of Virginia" was not required reading in the northern public school I attended as a youth, was it in yours?

Nineteenth-century professor and theologian Robert Lewis Dabney captivates his readers with essays and lectures covering a vast array of subjects in this 11-volume collection. Robert Lewis Dabney Collection (11 Vols.) contains ten books of valuable insight into theology, science, and psychology, as well as a biographical volume taking a close-up look into the life of this Southern Presbyterian Confederate.

Included in this collection is a very practical and compelling one-volume resource on the subject of the Sabbath as a day of rest. Dabney also explores the realms of science and religion in another single volume book, titled The Sensualistic Philosophy of the Nineteenth Century. I thought the article would be great next time our pastor thinks he should be paid (just joking of course). The chaplains were using the odd argument that their families were starving.

Well to intice you to look into this collection a will share a few tid bits about this man of God.

ROBERT LEWIS DABNEY
1820 - 1898 AD

“When the dark cloud of Civil War settled over our land, Dr. Dabney exerted himself to allay excitement and preserve peace and the Union. His trenchant articles written at that time met with warm commendation in the North as well as in the South. True to the Constitution and its doctrine of the Sovereignty of States, he enlisted in the Confederate Army as chaplain, and became General “Stonewall” Jackson’s Chief of Staff. More than once he distinguished himself for coolness and courage, and near Port Republic in the Valley campaign his prompt action averted disaster from the army, for which his modesty alone prevented him from receiving the credit he deserved.”

“He was a matchless teacher. He possessed a clear, powerful intellect, which grasped the substance of the most profound philosophical themes and made them plain. He had had that close contact with men, that practical experience of affairs, which enabled him to present difficult subjects in their relation to the thought and needs of every-day life. He exemplified the difference between a learned book-worm, who knew his subject only from a theoretical viewpoint, and the profound master who presented it in relation to the actual experience of his hearers. Dr. Dabney had that rare gift of making systematic theology not a study of dry bones, but a living system, most interesting and instructive, because throbbing with reality and power. Dr. W. G. T. Thanks Tom. I have been on board since the collection was first offered. This work is needed in our day. The work is thoroughly reformed, untainted by post-modern or neo-platonic ideology and wholeheartedly confessional.

His collection in the "Discussions" set alone is priceless in its content. Especially vol 3. In this volume he covers public education, labor unions, civic ethics and human rights. You would think that he was living in our day as he puts forth the implications of the various humanist positions within these topics.

I cannot say enough about the content of this collection. This collection is needed for study in our day, especially for the men of God who are on the front lines of the battle to not only proclaim the kingdom of Christ but to also dismantle the city of man. This goes beyond the evangelical skirmishes of abortion and same sex marriage. This collection will help frame the biblical position of Goverment, labor, family and God's providence in history.

Brethren,

Here is a link to a lecture series my pastor has put together on a study
of ch 23 of the Westminster Confession of Faith 1646, dealing with the Civil
Magistrate. It is worth taking in the whole series, however in this particular
portion he is using R.L. Dabney's work to critique the social contract theory,
and French revolutionary "rights" theory. His thesis (my pastor) is
that the social contract theory was embraced by our nation as it rejected the
biblical view of government during the colonial period and during the so-called
civil war.

It
was copied from tapes, however the clarity is mp3 clear. The only minus is the
gap we get from the tape being flipped over during the original recording, the
sound has been edited so that there is no noticeable gap except in the content
while he is speaking. Also the question and answer portion is only one sided
with the sound. Either way it is worth the listen as he reads from Dabney's
Discussions Vol 3.

For anyone interested in American church history in the 19th century, the works of Dabney, Thornwell, and Hodge would all represent a great addition to the Perseus Civil War Collection. It would be nice to see all of these collections move ahead and move down in price.

This is one collection that needs a little help to get it into production so I am going to continue to draw it to everyones attention. [:D]

I have been in on this from the beginning. I first discovered Dabney through a company called "Sprinkle Publications" that specialized in Puritan and Presbyterian religious "reprints" of books that were out of print. (Another one I got from "Sprinkle" was "Lex Rex" written by Samuel Rutherford and often quoted by Francis Schaeffer.) Dabney is very different --certainly different from some of the comments I have observed here on the forum. There are definitely divergent religious persuasions here that may not appreciate Dabney as much--but different viewpoints are a good thing to explore! I would encourage everybody to take a look at this offering closely.
