Indexing...

I've recently updated to a MacBook Pro and have installed and downloaded 12 GB of resources. It is indexing now and it has been for about 36 hours and it is 60% done. On my windows OS, indexing was complete in about 10 hours. Is this typical for the MAC version or is there something else that is going on?

It is a Macbook Pro i7 2.2GHz. 4GB Ram.

My approx. 8GB of resources was done overnight, don't know how long left it and went to bed.

I have i7 3.4 with 8GB of RAM. Is the indexer using all CPU cores? You can see CPU usage by using Activity Monitor and looking/sorting by process name or %CPU.

You could also install iStat Menus (http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/) great app for Macs which can show details of CPU usage by core. The indexer should be a separate process and it should be hammering the CPU.

Also discovered that if you double click on the 'CPU Usage' indicator in Activity Monitor it brings up new window which shows all CPU cores including hyper-thread cores. So my 4 core i7 shows 8 in total.

Thank you Patrick. It seems that my indexer is spreading itself out over all the cores and it is hitting about 54% usage. You mentioned that this should be slamming it. How do I set an affinity that this process has priority and uses more of the resources?

Wonder if MacBook Pro plugged in to power adapter ?

Likewise wonder about energy saver settings ? (possibly computer sleeping instead of completing indexing)

Option: if diagnostic logging is enabled: 5504.Logos4MacLogging.app.zip , could open Indexer.log to see what's happening. To enable logging, does require restarting indexer process, which could loss hours of indexing effort.

Observation: rebuilding index of ~ 4,040 resources (~ 12 GB) using 2.0 GHz Quad Core i7 running Windows 7 took 2 hours 44 minutes while Logos 4 Mac on 2.93 GHz Quad Core i7 took almost 6 hours. Appears Logos 4 Mac may have an indexing speed regression (apologies: not know if iMac was used by another user for part of time while indexing was in progress).

It is plugged in during this process.

I have adjusted this so that it does not happen. I did this before I began indexing.

Indexing on the Mac seems to take a bit longer than with a PC for me. It's the one area that still seems to lag behind the PC version, but I wouldn't take it as a deal breaker.

Well "slamming" speaking colourfully [;)] Constant and maintained CPU usage of 54% is working a machine reasonably (pretty) hard. There are OS X (Unix) commands that can give priority to a process but I think really the Logos Indexer has, is taking, enough.

The command is 'nice' but as noted here "nice becomes useful when several processes are demanding more resources than the CPU can provide. In this state, a higher priority process will get a larger chunk of the CPU time than a lower priority process". You don't have that issue because, as you mentioned, you have shut down most other applications.

If it is still running then I would say that something is going wrong. You may need to post your logs for a log expert like Keep Smiling to have a look at. The indexing could be stuck on one book which may be corrupt. The indexing should not taking this long.

May want to consider hard drive upgrade to 7200 RPM (up to 33 % faster is noticeably in many applications, including Logos 4) or Solid State Disk (SSD). Hybrid Seagate Momentus XT has 4 GB SSD with 7200 RPM drive where SSD is used to cache frequently used files. Puzzled by indexing time. For one book, have seen many indexer crashes, which causes blue icon to go away.

Hi John — is your indexing problem solved? Could you let us know. If it is still happening strongly recommend you follow KSFJ's instructions and post a log, as he says it could be one book title causing the problem.

Hi all - Thanks for your help. My indexing finally finished. It seemed to be locking up but it WAS NOT locking up - it just took a long, long time. Post indexing, I must say that my experience with MAC is faster than the PC. I have a hybrid 500GB hard drive but have not installed it. I will probably upgrade to 8GB to help with the multitasking ability of the laptop.
