What if WiFi is not available? Can Android apps do any searches then?
I have noticed a huge difference in different Bibles on the Kindle Fire. The Osnova KJV and NET plus the Crossway ESV search in seconds on the 3rd generation Kindle but take many minutes on the Kindle Fire. The Tecarta KJV and NIV take just a few seconds on the Kindle Fire. The Osnova requires indexing for a few hours upon installation. The Tecarta Android App has built their indices into the App.
The Logos Bibles as well require an extended time for indexing on my PC upon installation. Then it searches in just seconds. For the Logos Android App to work at peak performance, it would have to have its indices built into the App. If it requires local indexing or access to a WiFi, it will search very slow.
Thus, Logos may be impaired on the Kindle Fire since the latter appears to impair indexing. That problem may have something to do with why the Logos Android App is available in the Amazon App Store but is flagged at the moment as incompatible with the Kindle Fire. Perhaps, once the Logis indices get built into the App, then the flag will change to show compatibility.
My Church has locked WiFi access so only staff can access it. The membersip does not have access to WiFi at my Church so the Bibles I use must be able to search fast without internet access. The reason for locking WiFi at Church is to prevent the members from having access to shared files which are required for the staff to function properly.

My main use for the Kindle Fire would be for reading Logos resources, note taking and highlighting and basic Bible searches to locate a specific verse or passage. Any serious, in depth study would likely be done on my desktop.

Currently no. You need some form of Internet connection - Wi-Fi or mobile network. According to the FAQ, offline search of resources is planned - http://community.logos.com/forums/t/34373.aspx

This is, I believe, one of the issues Logos are trying to address. I don't see how they could build indices into the App because many people would be using different resources. This is a consequence of Logos making available as many of our resources as they can, not just a single (or few) Bibles.
If it requires local indexing or access to a WiFi, it will search very slow.
The iPad app does have local searching when offline. It is functional but not very fast. With the intention to get feature parity between the two applications this is something we will have to wait for.

The "incompatible" flag may be more to do with availability of an SD card which the Logos app requires. I understand that the Fire makes one available internally.

It all depends on what you mean by "fast". It is ok for me on the iPad (and so I would expect it to provide something similar on Android) but others might find offline searching too slow.

Thanks for that link. It shows the following:

Q: What features are planned?
- Offline search of downloaded books
- Library list sorting and filtering
- Favorites
- Reading plans
- Copy text
- Highlighting
- Notes
- Sharing via Twitter, Facebook and email
- Split screen
- Tablet-optimized layout
That's the answer I was awaiting. Once that is developed, I'll install the Logos App on my Kindle Fire.

I was able to get this to work but thought I would add a little more detail.
I followed these steps and Logos installed just fine on my Fire.
Now, figuring out how to use it will be the next project. I don't care to try to do much study with it...I mainly want it on the Fire so I can readd some of the books in my library.

Any updates regarding performance on the kindle fire? I'm thinking of side-loading it, but wondering about the current beta. Perhaps I should just wait for it to go gold and see if it pops up in the amazon app store. However, not sure how long that will be.
So, regarding perfomance, feel, and look...anyone have any further thoughts?

An update about Logos beta release for Android and the Kindle Fire.
Yes, Logos works great on the Fire, but no, the Android App cant do much of what the desktop does. I am still quite happy with it. My main (only?) Reason to have Logos on my Fire (any portable phone or tablet device is to read resources when I am out. Now, perhaps in the future, that will change!
I downloaded (sideloaded) Logos beta release and then I downloaded about 50 - 60 books into Logos with nearly 6 GB left of space. I have downloaded many other apps (forgive me, but I just had to have youversion as well!) And additional databases. The Fire remains speedy and responsive. No, it is not an iPad2, but it is a very useful, handy device!
The worst thing thus far about the Fire is how the web browser (Silk, normally a very nice browser) interacted with Logos Forums. I, and at least one other Fire user, could not post to the Forums! Why? I don't know. But, I am making this post using my Fire ... though it was not easy. I suspect there will be a fix. Until then I use another browser for the Forums. But if that is as bad as it gets, I am thrilled with this device. Before the Fire I had a dual-booting (Android) NookColor. It was very nice, but there were too many pluses of the Fire to ignore.
In short, the Kindle Fire is a capable and useful Logos device. You can sideload it now or wait until the full revision is complete. I know that I like the Fire so wel l that I sold my NookColor. Speed is better than on the Nook and it is a lot more convenient. At least, that is my two-day appraisal!

where do you download the app? How do you sideload it?

JJ Miller,
thanks for the great reply. I am very excited now to try this out. I mainly want to use it to read resources as well.
quick question: the side load...did you follow the steps outlined above regarding the easy installer and .apk file? Worked fine for you?
0 -
Yes, I did. I followed the process outlined here. I got the Easy Installer program and downloaded the .apk file from the Forum site as described. I have installed so many things today, I don't know that I could do it again without looking at the instructions...but yes, everything installed well. Once complete, I simply launched the Logos app and started downloading books that I need (Bibles and some commentaries, and then some specific stuff on the Gospels that I am preparing messages for).
All worked fine.

JJthanks for great update, JJ. the only reason I'd get one is for Logos, and that is wayyy cheaper than iPad2. Anytime you can post more, we (I, for sure) have open ears!

where do you download the app? How do you sideload it?
Josh, here is what I did to download the Easy Installer App and sideload Logos Android (thanks to others who posted this earlier!):
1) The first thing I did was to change my settings to allow for sideloading. Simply go to my Fire Settings menu (top of screen) and then tap MORE, then choose chose DEVICE. Under DEVICE you will see "Allow Installation of Applications from Unknown Sources"...tap this and make sure ON is in Orange. Return Home.
2) Using the Fire Web App, I browsed to the forum and clicked on the link for the Android beta App. Here is the link:
http://downloads.logos.com/Android/Logos/beta/Logos-23.apk When you do this, remember that these downloads will show up in your Kindle Notifications area (at top of the screen where it says, "JJ's Kindle" and a number). Just know that you won't see anything while it downloads (unless you go to notifications). Good news, I didn't know this when I started and it wasn't important... but as someone else has said, no need to download it 3 times thinking that nothing has happened.
3) Now I downloaded the EASY INSTALLER app by going to Home > App > STORE and then typed a search for INSTALLER (or follow the link that someone provided below). Download the free EASY INSTALLER app, and then go to your Notifications area to launch it (if needed). The program should load and find the Logos beta .apk file that you downloaded in step 2. Select it and then tap on "Install Selected App." .
Here is the link for the installer: http://www.amazon.com/INFOLIFE-LLC-Easy-Installer/dp/B004RDMXSI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=mobile-apps&qid=1321459139&sr=1-1
4) Lastly, launch Logos for Android and then go to your library and search for some books that you know you would likely want access to all the time. A few Bibles, perhaps some Study Bibles or commentaries, or dictionaries, etc. This way you know you have access to these books when you don't have wifi connection.
Thanks to those who identified these steps before.

JJ and others... thanks for the excellent links. They work and Logos is now on my Fire.
Does anyone have a link to do the same with Vyrso? I don't want to try and study on the Fire, just read so Vyrso would be the better choice for me.
The Fire is a great little device. My only gripes so far are: 1) Touchscreen is not as responsive as it should be and 2) Scrolling is not very smooth.

Here is the Vyrso beta download page.
The Easy Installer app is not necessary for installing.
We are working on fixing a couple items that prevent the Logos and Vyrso apps from working correctly on the Kindle Fire and will have an update out soon.

It is great to hear you are working on a fix to get Logos on the Fire through the Amazon Appstore. I have friends that are interested but don't like the thought of sideloading. Thank!

It's necessary if you want to use it today, isn't it?
In any event, looking forward to both apps optimized for the Fire.

No, in the device settings you can set the Kindle to allow installation of applications from unknown sources. Then just download the apk and open it.

I can confirm you do not need the installer if you adjust the settings to allow for installation from unknown sources. I used the installer app the first time to install and it worked, but due to a complete reset I just downloaded it from the link and selecting it from the completed tasks in notifications for install allowed it to install itself. As a work around for posting in the forums if you click on "html" in the graphical menu above the text box you will be taken to a full screen box to type in straight HTML code, but you can just type text then update in the bottom left corner of screen (you'll possibly need to rotate to landscape to be able to see the update button with the keyboard minimized.
So far I really like the fire, I'm looking forward to the fixes for several oddities with the fire. Anyone worked out the logic on when the bottom menu bar overlaps the app menus? Still haven't nailed down all the times it works correctly or doesn't but it seems to be ok on the secondary screens as opposed to goobered on the home screen. (had to come edit this as some of the auto spell corrections were pretty odd)0 -
Thank you all so much! I'm almost emotional now that I can actually access Logos on my Fire. Aw heck, I'm such a girl.

Hi Chuck,
Can you please help me? I saw your post on installing the logos app on the Kindle Fire. I was also really looking forward to having this on my Kindle. I followed your instructions to "Allow installation of applications from unknown sources". You lost me after that. Exactly how do I download the ".apk file"? where.....how ....do I find that? I tried going to the app store on the Fire. I tried going to amazon website and logos website. I don't know what I am doing wrong. Can you please help me?
Thank you
Linda

JJ,
Thank you, thank you, thank you for the detailed step by step instructions for those of us who are technically challenged! A blind man could follow your directions...so they even worked for me! I am soooo happy now! The logo looks kinda funny on the carousel...but who cares. It works!!! I was starting to get so frustrated. I am thrilled with my Kindle. I had my old one a few years. Ordered the fire and the touch and was sooo looking forward to having my logos on it. Anyway I am thrilled now. Thanks for taking the time to help those of us who are helpless...but not hopeless out.
:-) Linda

The Logos app appears in their app store, but when I tried to download it to my Fire, it shows not compatible.
Big disappointment. Hope this gets resolved.

Jerry, read through this thread, earlier there are instructions on how to get the app on the Amazon Kindle Fire. It needs to be sideloaded.

Will this also fix the problem on the Kindle in which the search feature is obscured at the bottom of the page and difficult to select? Another problem I have on "Fire," which I don't have on my droid, is related to the menu items at the bottom of the page. Sometimes they show and sometimes they don't. Sometimes I see them for an instant and then they either disappear or are blocked by the main selection box of the fire itself. Sometimes I have to go back to the Fire home page and then to Logos to get back where I was before trying to do a search or word look up.

Amazon just changed the Android Logos App from Non-Compatible with the Kindle Fire to COMPATIBLE.
I downloaded it and describe my impressions below.
Here is the link:
Some of my first impressions:
1. The fonts were small and could not be changed or enlarged.
2. I did manage to download the NIV 1984 and Easton's Bible Dictionary. I could not find online The Bible Knowledge Commentary.
3. The NIV 1984 did index and became accessible. Searches were fast. Table of contents and location of books and verses were convenient.
4. If I did a long hold on a word, the dictionary definition did NOT come up.
5. Access to my extensive footnotes did not appear nor was I able to download them.
6. Right now I can really only use Logos on my PC. For a great Android App for use with the Kindle Fire I use Tecarta. It allows parallel display of different bibles in Landscape Mode and clear use of downloaded books and books still in the cloud. They allow access to all their books free and only charge for some if one downloads them. It also allows enlargement of fonts, scrolling of pages automatically for use in Bible studies and easy insertion, marking and reading of my own notes both margin notes and general notes.
7. If Logos gets improved a LOT, I will then be able to use it on my Kindle Fire. If not, so be it. I"ve tried several other Bible companies on the Android Apps and all have fallen short by a lot compared to Tecarta.
8. At least Amazon has enabled normal installation of the Logos Android App now without sideloading. However, the Logos App also does not clearly display all downloaded books as distinct form books still in the Cloud requiring WiFi access. My Church does NOT allow parishioners to access the encryted WiFi so the only books I'd be able to access are those which were downloaded.

I successfully loaded the Logos app for Android on my Kindle Fire.
From your Kindle Fire device, to the www.logos.com Click on "apps for Everyone" and then "logos for Android" Follow the download instructions. While in the app, the Logos menu bar is accessed by taping the Kindle menu botton. It is the button just to the right of the "back" button on the botton task bar. This menu button gives you access to a variety of logos functions, including Passage Guide, Word Guide, and yoru library. However, once you open a book, the navigation bar disappears and is not accessible. I hope Logos is able to correct this problem

Here is the new INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for Logos for Android on the Fire:
Use your Kindle Fire and go to the APPS section, search the AppStore for Logos. Click on Blue Icon! Install! How sweet is that!?!
Yes, the Logos App is available and official now.
I had previously installed it via sideloading so, I am interested in seeing if it can simply UPDATE or if it needs reinstallation, etc.
OK, it gave me a message indicating that it found a previous installation and is asking whether I want to update it to the Amazon version. Yes! And now it is telling me that it is using the Cloud. I wonder if the Amazon Cloud will now be used, saving me space on my Kindle Fire? We will soon see.

I for one am definitely following this thread. I am updating it every half hour in my browser! So let's us know...and thank you.

" However, once you open a book, the navigation bar disappears and is not accessible. I hope Logos is able to correct this problem." There is an inverted "v" at the bottom. Click that and the Logos menu appears. That is the usual way many Android apps work.
" And now it is telling me that it is using the Cloud. I wonder if the Amazon Cloud will now be used, saving me space on my Kindle Fire? We will soon see. " That "Cloud" is the Logos Cloud, not the Amazon one.
Click on the far right ">" for any book and you can download it to your Fire. You can open books on the Device or on the Cloud but their location is not clearly indicated in the Library. Also, many books like the Bible Knowledge Commentary do not appear in the available Library. Our Notes also do not appear in the Library.
We need the ability to enlarge fonts like in the Tecarta. The present font is way to small for my comfort. Also, we need to be able to use parallel windows in Landscape Mode with different resources and the ablility to link them. Commentaries, dictionaries and alternate Bibles should be available in any of the two columns.
Automatic scrolling of text is very important to keep up with Bible studies in Church.
Finally, very high compression is required for downloading a lot of books. The Fire only has 5 Gb of space for downloads plus another 1.54 Gb of space on it's non-removable SD. The NIV Logos 1984 NIV plus the App used .04 Gb. I'm down to 5.61 Gb available from my beginning total of 6.54 Gb. If you use a USB cable to connect to a PC, you cannot see the 1.54 Gb on the SD card - only the 5 Gb in the main memory.
I uninstalled the Logos App and it's related data since otherwise new versions will just add to the totals - not replace them.
