Question about speed of these "new" larger annotation/highlights

In the past there has been (the assumption? reality?) that very large annotations had the effect of slowing operations in Logos 4.

The new (palette or highlighter" notes) now have the potential to become VERY, VERY large.

IF this effects Logos 4 performance I will have to turn them off completely ie. in essence this means that I might as well just abandon "simple" highlighting. [:(]

Bob P. had indicated that L4 was designed to support larger note files than L3. That has not been my experience but this should be "the jury's still out" performance issue.

Comparing the size of your Notes database (Notes.db) between v4.3 and v4.5 should provide that information. You will have more Notes records because of the Highlighting in v4.3 which was migrated to Notes.db.

The Note record itself now contains data like the Markup Style Name (palette/style) together with Indicator Kind and Color. However, Logos have rationalised some other data sufficiently to not increase the size of an annotation record with highlighting over the size of the v4.3 record; and your v4.3 annotations should be slightly smaller.

For many users, though, this improvement will be swamped by the extra highlighting records + I've noticed 4 backups of my Notes.db in the Notes folder, one of which is my v4.3 Notes.db! So my Notes folder is 5x bigger than v4.3.

One other improvement should make your Notes more recoverable in the case of a disaster (hopefully Logos will confirm this).

How this affects performance I can't be sure but when a note/highlight is deleted in v4.5 the record is removed from the database. In v4.3 the record is flagged as deleted (it may be removed later).

realistically speed is directly proportional to a computers specifiaction, the more ram and processor/graphics speed the better you will be..

The "real" delay will be in the drawing/updating the markup and note markers, hence a fast GPU and CPU will be advantageous, the notes/highlights are retrieved from a database, the more highlighting/notes the longer to search/display, sqlite is an efficient engine, I know of an sqlite database application querying a 300,000 record dataset, and returning the results in under 1sec. the issue is not the storage/retreival, but the time to draw them on screen

wouldnt expect you to notice any slowdown until you have several hundred per resource, unless you also apply a global visual filter to a text, ther maye be a small extra display if you did.as they sem to be applied as 2 seperate actions.

Perhaps it is the "slower" screen drawing time that I notice.

[some what un-related] speaking of screen drawing/what one visual sees etc - I think so far the "slowest thing" is the first time you try to close a collection or a search -- I "hang" for at least 8-10 seconds, may be even more?
