Frozen

I have never had a problem loading Logos until this morning. It has frozen my Asus G73h four times. Nothing to do but reboot and freeze again. I have run some PC tuneup utilities from AVG that I do a few times a week anyway. To no avail. Everything works but Logos. Should I re-install?

I do not think reinstalling is needed at this point.
FIrst let's turn on diagnostic logging ( Diagnostic Logging ) and upload your logs here.
We'll take a look at them and see if we can diagnose a problem.

Mark before we recommend a reinstall have you tried opening to a blank layout? Hold down ctrl as you are starting Logos, before you sign in check the box to open to a blank layout. If it freezes upload logs to this tread, perhaps we can see what's going on.

When I do a <CTRL> Open, it freezes. It will not open a thing except the Logos Window frame. NOthing else. Also, the rest of the computer freezes. I can't do anything but power off.

I tried to delete the lengthy post but could not.
Did you try to click on the "More" button & then choose "Edit"?

Your log file does not show a crash, and only shows about 37 seconds of activity (first time stamp=08:44:00; last time stamp=08:44:37). Did you zip and post the log before attempting a restart of L4.
Is there also a Logos4Crash.txt file in the directory? Are there any other logs?
Also, is it possible that you just need to wait a little longer for Logos to finish loading?
It's possible that it actually did freeze at 8:44:37 and sat there for a long time (the time stamp doesn't record duration, only initial events). But if this is all there is, it's not going to help much, if at all.

There are 14 files that are called AppCrash_logos4indexerex_...
There is also this attached Logos4Crash.txt file.
I will now let it try to load for 15 minutes.8780.Logos4Crash.zip

Stayed frozen for 16 minutes and then I forced a reboot. Here is the latest logfile. 5314.Logos4.zip

Not quite different - if you ran the program for 16 minutes it only logged the first ~24 seconds before freezing.
I'm not seeing anything specific here - I suggest you contact technical support.

Your Logos4Crash.txt file was from 2011-08-18, so no help there.
Once again this log only shows 24 seconds of activity. Then it stops with no further information.
I think it's time to call or email tech support. The phone number is on the Logos web page, tech support email is tech@logos.com. Feel free to point them to this thread.

Hmm.
I'm going to shoot in the dark here. There are no promises here only my musing outloud so to speak.
Both of the relevant logs freeze at or just after locating the history manager database.
C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Logos4\Data\zcctxyu2.rqh\HistoryManager\history.db
Try this: close logos if it's trying to run, reboot if necessary. → Then rename the above located history.db to history.db.old → restart the program and see if it makes a difference.
If it works you've only lost the history database which will be rebuilt for you. If it doesn't work name the file back if you desire.
I'm hesitant because while the first freeze appears right at discovery the second freeze goes ~0.5 seconds past that and freezes at a slightly different location. But what interests me is the notation in your second log that excess history items are being deleted - it makes me wonder if there's a flaw in the database that is catching it.
It's only a guess mind you.

Do let us know how it turns out. If we've missed something obvious we don't want to miss it "next time".

Okay. Almost 2 hours on phone with two levels of tech support and I'm right where I was before. A larger group will now scour my log file to see what they can come up with.

Could it be a hardware problem? Maybe it's hitting a bad disk sector right in the middle of that database it's trying to open, or some other necessary files.
Run CHKDSK from a DOS prompt and see what turns up.

Thanks. We did that and a whole lot more, tech support and me. All is good on the hardware side, so far as support level two can determine. My log is being reviewed by some team at Logos. In the meanwhile...
Good thing the books on my shelves still open.

Wonder about disconnecting computer from network (unplug cables or disable network adapters), then try launching Logos 4 ?
Wonder about updating video display driver ?

Did you try a repair of .NET?
Mark E. Ryman said:That doesn't sound familiar. I don't think we did. How do I do that?
If running Vista or Windows 7, blog has steps => http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2007/03/26/how-to-repair-the-net-framework-2-0-and-3-0-on-windows-vista.aspx via command: scf /scannow
If running Windows XP, blog has repair notes => http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2009/03/04/9459067.aspx
Edit: learned about a last resort .Net Framework cleanup tool => http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2011/02/20/10132043.aspx that recommends trying normal uninstall first. Also noticed .Net Troubleshooting Guide => http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2005/08/22/unified-net-framework-troubleshooting-guide.aspx links to article about .Net Framework setup logs => http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/04/30/8445569.aspx

Okay. I didn't recognize it by NET repair. But when I followed you directions (which I really appreciate), I saw that it was something Support did. I did it again though. No integrity violations.

Disconnecting from network has same results. CTRL starting L4 in blank layout and offline also freezes system.

Searching internet, found a free Paint.Net program that uses .Net Framework 3.5 => http://www.getpaint.net/
Also found a demo program => http://www.codeproject.com/KB/WCF/DrawMeWCF.aspx (download needs registration)
Like found http://code.google.com/p/expressionista/
Wonder if a different .Net Framework 3.5 program works ?

How about trying a "System Restore" to an earlier time when Logos worked? This has worked for me in the past.

Might be difficult to imagine, but I'm still trying to resolve this issue.
Yes it is.
Contact customer support. If you live in North America, use the 800 number. They can get on your system remotely (with your permission), and very probably find/fix your issues in a short amount of time. It can take longer, if you have an problem they haven't dealt with before (unlikely at this point, but possible).

I did. (See above.) Couple levels of tech support said they could not resolve the issue. I can run anything but Logos. Still, they left me with it being an issue that they could not resolve.
I revisit this page today because, in trying to get an old computer able to run Logos (it's downloading all of my resources now!), I came across a couple of possibilities for a fix that I may end up being able to share here later.

Update: No matter what I have tried (including Logos Tech suggestions) I could not get beyond the splash page before Logos 4.0 froze my computer. Today, I downloaded 5.0 and I am up and running again.

Sorry to hear about your ongoing issues here but glad to hear that you are up and going again with Logos 5. You will not regret all the amazing features it has to offer.
