Encyclopedias and dictionaries

Greetings, where do these resources show up? Are they suppose to show up in the info window, the passage guide, or the exegetical word by word guide?

Have recently bought two and I even did verse that has a word from the encyclopedia and it still doesn't show.

Gary,

The Passage Guide looks for references to the Bible reference you have chosen to run it on. It does not look for every word in the passage so that will not help you.

The Exegetical Guide will do the same thing. You can add a collection of dictionaries/encyclopedias to either but it will search for the reference not words in the passage.

To use my dictionaries (I have many), I use the right click menu on the word I want to look up. Use the Selection tab on that menu. This works best when you prioritize your top five dictionaries/encyclopedias so they show up on the list of possible resources in the left pane of the right click menu. Then click on one and you're off. You can then use the parallel resources button on the dictionary's navigation bar to find other dictionaries with an article on that word.

I should have added that it seems you are simply using the Go box on the Home Page to do your studying. If you haven't done so, it would be well worth your time to investigate the video series by MVP Mark Barnes that will introduce you to the customization power in Logos 4 and some features you may not have explored yet.

Gary .... adding to Mark's guidance above, if you are working in the 'Go' box on the Home page, if you type in a subject in english, it will search your books, which will include your dictionaries.

I also learned something everyone else probably already knows. When you right-click on an english word, you can do as Mark noted (click on 'Selection' for a list of dictionaries). Or you can click on 'Things' shown below that.

I didn't know what might happen if I clicked on 'Things' but interestingly enough, it checks for other ways of saying the 'thing' you're looking for.

So in my case, I wanted 'tent' but Anchor Dictionary doesn't have such an entry. Under 'Selection' Anchor was nowhere to be found.

But using 'Thing', it was first in line. 'Me, me!!!' Anchor uses 'canopy'. Good boy, good boy!

Kind of interesting though not so easy to remember.

Thanks I go through seasons of wanting to know more about the software but don't always take the time. I do mostly exegetical study so is why I recently added dictionaries and encyclopedias. I have looked at some of the videos. I like how the TWOT and the TDNT work. Thank you, will take a look to know more.

That works wonderfully but only in the case where the word selected is recognized by Logos as a thing. If it is a person then it will have a Person entry. If it is a place, there there will be a Place entry. If is not a person, thing, or place then it won't work at all. So this will sometimes get you to your dictionaries, but not always.

If you really want right click access to your dictionaries, then here is one thing you can do: create a collection of dictionaries, and then create a custom Bible Word Study template with just one entry: a Collection that points to your dictionaries collection. Name the custom guide Dictionaries, then whenever you right click on a word and select the 'Selection' tab you will find 'Dictionaries' appear in the left hand menu. As long as one of your dictionaries has an entry on the selected word, the guide will open a dictionary to that word. It will then list the other dictionaries you have with that word listed in them.

This is the sort of thing Logos allows you to do but you must spend a little time learning in order to know what is possible and how to do it.

I think it's also worth mentioning that if you have the info panel open it will show the definition from your dictionaries of the word in the verse you hover over as well as the lexicon entry for the coresponding original language.

Yes, I would like that but they don't show up. I did create a collections and they show up. But I would like for them to show up in the info window, that is I think preferred. Thank you.

If you prioritize them right after your prioritized bibles (this is done from the library panel) before your lexicons, commentaries, and anything else they should show up in the info window.

One thing to consider is the speed of your computer. The info window takes a bit (depending on your computer) to populate with the definitions. Mine takes less than a second but my laptop is speedy.

Prioritize can be found in the upper right corner of the library panel. If you list (drag and drop) your favorite handful of bibles, then dictionaries, then lexicons, then commentaries, etc. there it should fix your problem.

Yes, I did that but they still don't show up. They show up in other ways but would be nice to have them in the info window. : )

Gary - First, is it possible that you have your information panel set to "click" instead of "hover?" If this is the case, you would have to click on a word to make the info panel work. Otherwise, it might be helpful for us to have a screenshot. See the wiki if you need to:

You will only have one dictionary show up in the info window. It will use your top prioritized one if it can. It depends on it the word appears in the dictionary. Here is a shot of the settings panel with the options. You can't specify a collection:

Yes, thanks, i noticed that. I also re-indexted my library which allowed everything to show up and it is working much smoother.
