Logos 4 Newly Beloved Features

I -- along with many others -- have voiced our frustrations with L4. There are however new features that are "love at first sight". I think it would be great to share these with others so that they are made aware of these and get some balm on our aching L3 devotees hearts.

Here is one: I LOVE the new highlighting pane. It's just so much more convenient than the older right-click selection, go find your markup style approach. With the pane on the side and the visualization of markup style to click from, highlighting is a snap!

What about you? What nugget(s) have you found? We all sharing the frustrations, hey, I want to make sure I get my fair share of the good stuff!

I love the constant updates (installing can be a pain), but I am glad that we are getting pushed updates as they happen rather than in big chunks (making us wait weeks or months with bugs that could be already fixed).

I love clippings! Being able to highlight text and add it to clipping file that I can peruse later is very nice. It is a big time saver when reading and coming across a quote I want to remember.

Yes. And I don't want to high jack this into a suggestion thread but having clippings in the homepage text would be great. Sort of a review of what we read in previous days to keep thinking on it.

To prevent the high jacking let me just say saveable guides, multi-monitor support, the Hymn sheets, infographics....

What about having clippings allow you to choose which clipping something belongs to?

It's irritating to always default to whatever clipping you were working on last...

i haven't used that on 4 yet (did the beta in 3), but how exactly is that useful. Not being cantankerous, I just want to know. I suppose if i was blind . . . just wondering.

To be honest I haven't used it a whole lot in 4 yet either, but I like that its there. If I'm driving I can plug in my computer and listen to any book in my library as I go. Perhaps its recordable (I know it is, I just don't feel like figuring out how) so that I could take it with me on a jog.

Listening to a book is a idfferent experience than reading a book. While taking my daily walk I often listen to books I download on my Blackberry. Whether or not it is a positive experience depnds on the kind of book being read.

I guess it might also depnd on the voice. I know that somehow the voices can be changed but, for the recod, my computer voice sounds like out of a really bad 50s sci-fi movie.

One recent discovery...

In the 4.0 Library pane/module/window, I enjoy
being able to select the (i) icon which opens up a LIVE "about this
resource" pane (it updates whenever I highlight another book/resource).

It's a great way to quickly and easily see a helpful description
of some of my lesser-known resources.

I know a man (about 50 years old) who was just added to the body of Christ a few months ago and - in the process of our first Bible study - I realized he couldn't read. This feature is perfect for him to use in Bible study. It has been amazing to me how he's been able to compensate and I could see how he could manipulate Logos 4 to aid him in his Bible studies.....hmmmmmm, sounds like a test case for me and a potentially HUGE tool for him.

Another small feature I like: I DO like the improvements to Notes, so far. Even a little thing like giving it a title is SIMPLE. I could NEVER remember how to do that in v3, lol. Little tweaks like that, and making the font change more streamlined (less clicks) are a plus plus plus! thank you!

as per another's comment: I also like the info pane, if just to see who is the author of a particular commentary or book I have open. (in case it was not plain before hand), also is cool when trying to figure out if it should be included in a particular collection.

You know, it has been over 10 years since using IBM's voice recognition software. I've always wondered how far the voice commands/dictation have come and now with your comment, how much Logos has incorporated the use of voice commands/dictation. Good suggestion, Daniel.

If you are using a MAC running L4 in Fusion you can use WireTap to record the audio, dump it into your iPod or iPhone to listen on the go!

I like the clippings ability, too. But, is it possible to bring an outside source (from another Bible study program) via the clipboard...in all of my attempts so far, that has not been the case. I really hope it can be done, otherwise I'll have to suffer without fully utilizing my resources.

I also really like the new Morphological Search functionality. Once I learned the @ symbol trick - the tool is very easy to use. Also doing searches for Greek words by typing the English transliteration (the g: trick) is much easier than L3! Love it!

Works with page numbers! I'm hoping they can implement chapter - Bob is aware and wants input on this.

I like the scrollbar bookmarks, information and power lookup windows, and I love the look and feel of the panes/windows interface - very easy to customize. One of my favorite features is having a picture of the book at the top of the pane and also having the information button to click on for a summary of the book - and you can even hover over each title to bring book info up quickly.

I like the tabs inside the context menu. At first I did not notice and understand that I could click on an item on the RIGHT (eg, Strong's number, passage reference, etc) and see a different set of corresponding options on the LEFT. As long as I did not know that, the context menu looked bare to me and lacking in some of the options I used to appreciate in Logos 3. With the use of the tabs, it is much better and in fact, quite useful.

In the example below, this is what you get when right-clicking on the word "world" in Jn 3:16 (NASB95). It is "Reference" that is selected in the right frame (red rectangle), note the options on the left (blue and green rectangles).

If you click in the right on the Strong's number, you get what's below (different options):

In addition to the following, these tabs work in an amazing number of different places. For instance, a right-click on an item in the interlinear section of a Bible provides options pertinent to the interlinear data.

For instance, one can right-click on a Hebrew lemma and "Bible Word Study" will be one of the options. Do it from that spot and you save yourself the need to type the Hebrew or cut&paste into the search menu.

Another option is to click in the right frame on the Morph part. On the left will appear the option to do a morphological search for either the same word in the same form or just the form. Again, pretty cool and saving one from having to know how to write the syntax of the morph search. Even if one wants to do a more complex search with more than one term, using the context menu "Morph" part in the interlinear can serve as a reminder of how to search for this particular form.

That is cool.
