I am still using XP Pro SP3, but I was curious if this Win 7 feature: Set Affinity, has any value for Logos 4. I'm making the assumption that this is part of Win 8 too. I may have an opportunity to upgrade my PC soon, so I am trying to learn more about Win 7.

That's a definite question for the Logos developers. On another thread discussing the Mac, they did discuss some of the details as to which processes could be spread across cores and which could not (single threaded). But 'affinity' settings are available in most windows process type utilities. Just playing around, not much happens. You'd have to have a heavy-duty piece of software AND the threading to be alterable in order to see an impact. Games come to mind, but they're carefully tuned.
Actually the more usable setting is 'priority'. Kicking that up to max does indeed make Logos page faster etc. In theory, again, it depends on what else is running; Logos might already have all resources assigned at the instant in time.
Hmm. Even XP is somewhat designed for multiple cores. I wonder if there's some shortcut setting that would automatically make Logos fire up and run in a priority or affinity mode as a norm so we can get it at its best performance. If a tweak will make my geriatric PC a bit better I'm more than willing.
I can't tell from your first entry if you're simply considering W7 or a new computer running W7.
W7 (in my experience) will actually do more for you than tinkering with the settings. MS has really done quite a bit to the system to allow a more stable and indeed faster user experience.
Please keep in mind, these type of settings are very temporary (i.e. their effect is relative to anything else running). For example W7 does a lot of background work to keep the system tuned up. However it's also very sensitive to user activity (meaning it stops its background work temporarily).
Unless you just want a new PC (which can be fun!), W7 will likely help you. I'm on a netbook without much power.
I am considering a newer PC. I don't really have strong enough hardware to make good use of Win 7.
We can't judge that as you haven't provided any details, but a newer PC with 64-bit Win 7 and 8 GB or more memory will definitely improve L4 performance. With the current PC setting Priority to Above Normal may help it.
Set Affinity can only reduce performance... usually to avoid other issues.
I am still using XP Pro SP3, but I was curious if this Win 7 feature: Set Affinity, has any value for Logos 4.
Was needed as an indexing work around on AMD computers for an older Logos 4 release; without affinity, indexing crashed.
By the way, depends on task whether Windows XP or Windows 7 is faster => http://www.maximumpc.com/article/reviews/windows_7_review (page 4 has performance comparison)
For new computer, suggest looking for 2nd Generation Core i5 or i7 processor with graphics card that has dedicated memory and fast storage.

This article is... shall we say... lacking in technical merit?
It's similar to claiming that forcing a cook to only use one element on the stove will help them prepare a meal faster. (Maybe it's a one-pot meal and you get lucky, but maybe not...)
