Won't start on HTC Desire

I have just installed the Logos app on my HTC Desire running Android 2.2 but it won't start. I see a white screen with a blue title bar briefly and then it force closes. I tried it first from the SD card because I don't have much space. In case it was a problem with running from SD I moved it to internal storage and tried again. I had 14.1MB free but it still force closes every time I start it up.

I shut down the phone and restarted and tried to run Logos with the same effect.

I suggest you uninstall Logos and then get free space of at least 40 MB on internal storage, and much more if you want to download resources.

Is that purely for the installation phase or does the app require 40MB+ free to run at all times? If the latter then I will be unable to maintain so high a level of free space on my Desire. It does seem quite a profligate use of memory when compared to other Android apps.

You need some free space for apps that require temporary storage or caches + some overhead to manage the SD. On Windows that's at least 20% free space. Let's say that 10% is adequate on Android and you have 8 GB SD, then you need at least 800 MB free!  So 40 MB free is really pushing the limits.

The Logos app. uses about 20 MB and will require more for installation!

Go to Settings and look for something like "SD card and phone storage". It should tell you how much free space on the SD card and/or internal storage?  Then try to follow the advice in my first post.

However, part of the problem may be that you don't have access to Android Market, but you should be able to get v0.9.2 from the Amazon Appstore (see http://community.logos.com/forums/t/41312.aspx).

Thanks for your help Dave, however, I'm a little confused by what you're saying here.  You're talking about 10% free space for caches etc and the management of the SD, but then you calculate that 10% as a percentage of the SD capacity. Since the Desire comes equipped with only 576MB of RAM in total, clearly I won't be keeping 800MB free! Most reports seem to indicate that, after the OS and standard services, a non-rooted Desire will have something on the order of 100MB in total for all user installed apps. Demanding in excess of 20MB for a single app just to launch is therefore fairly significant and a requirement I haven't encountered for any other app, including CadreBible and OliveTree's Bible Reader.

Your other remark about needing much more memory than this to install books seems to indicate a further confusion between internal and external storage. Surely the books would be downloaded to the SD? Indeed, the entire application can be moved to the SD card leaving only a relatively small internal storage footprint. It is in that condition that I expected to be able to use it. So, when you say that the Logos app uses about 20MB, are you simply referring to the 16MB size as reported in the Settings - Applications - Application Info panel in Android, or are you really saying that it needs in excess of 20MB just for its own caches and working space?

I've just updated to the new release of Logos for Android but there is no difference. The app simply cannot start.

Does anyone have any advice? Or can someone say definitively that the app requires 20-40MB of free internal storage just to load.?

I apologise for any confusion. I was talking about SD storage and not memory (RAM) but just realised you were referring to free space in RAM. My Galaxy S has c. 14 GB of internal SD storage and over 100 MB free memory.

Yes, I was talking about that Setting. 20 MB = SD storage including cache on my device.

When loaded Task Manager states that Logos uses about 30 MB of RAM.

Thanks for the clarification. I've got 24MB free right now with Logos on the SD card. I'll see if I can get it up to 30 but it's probably not practical to keep that much free unless Logos is very good!

Got to 27MB free without throwing out anything I use everyday and still no joy. I have to say it really seems like poor programming to be so demanding of resources. I haven't come across any other app quite so bad - but then I don't play many games, perhaps they also require acres of memory. In any case I'm going to give up on Logos.
