Basic Chapter / Verse search not working

The search you chose is a poor choice to test out Logos' capabilities. It is looking for a tagged reference to John 3:16 in your Bibles. The only place this may show up is in the footnotes/cross references in a Bible.

If you change over to a basic search and run it you should be able to get better results from other books in your library.

If you want to see the text of John 3:16 in multiple versions I suggest you use Text Comparison (if you're Scholar's Library or higher) or a Passage List set to display multiple version.

I've been reading for hours trying to figure out why the basic search pattern will not work with my Logos and according to the wiki page at: http://wiki.logos.com/Search_HELP there is no apparent reason. Is this a bug possibly?

Can replicate Bible search finding 0 results, however Basic search finds thousands of results:

Likewise a Bible search for words finds many verses. Another search option for verse references is Cited By.

I have Bible Study Library (JG) and have been using it for a month now. It is fully indexed.

The search choice was from the wiki example but the result is the same for any chapter/verse search on bible.

Searching by CH/VS is the most basic of searches, there has got to be a way right?

OK, so it seems every other syntax search works for me with the exception of bible datatypes. Since another user is able to replicate the same issue and the documentation is very clear that it should work (http://wiki.logos.com/Detailed_Search_Help#Simple_Search_Syntax) this has got to be a bug right?

Is there a bug list somewhere I can check it against or file one?

James, no its not a bug. I should have caught it, but when you do a bible search for "Jn 3:16," the bible text does not refer to "Jn. 3:16." If you want to find other books which refer to John 3:16, you need to do a basic search.

Thanks bama, unfortunately that window will not size or float for me like your screenshot. The left drop down does nothing and hovering for side bar tabs does not work on this window as it does others.

Seems like it would be more natural to include ch/vs in the search box since everything else seems to work there.

The ability to see the grid and float tool tips of the text is very nice. Oh well, appreciate the help!

Wonder about pressing F7 when showing verse(s) in a Bible ?

Note: F7 is showing 3 verses for Bible comparison; had highlighted 3 verses in one Bible, pressed F7 (to show comparison of highlighted verses), then clicked parallel resources to change to a different Bible, followed by F7 (that shows open Bible plus Top 4 Bibles).

Option: can float Text Comparison (click down facing triangle, then Float This Panel OR use keyboard control + command + F):

In the two screen shots below, I have shown you the default layout for "John 3:16" as run from the "Go" button on the home screen. In the first shot, notice that the text comparison is on the right, as in your screen shot. In the second one, I have dragged the text comparison tab to the bottom middle, and changed the view to "column." Also, in my earlier post, I told Logos to "float" the panel. For the sake of experimentation, can you run this test from the "Go" box? If you are still unable to do these things, let us know... something must be wrong.

What version of Logos are you running, by the way?

Very helpful tips people. I was able to do exactly like you showed and life is good.

The F7 trick is very handy and I will likely use that the most. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough but I have not found this kind of info in the help area or the videos I was watching from the online help pages.

The "drop down" arrow does not work for me but right click the header does give me the same menu. I suspect the drop arrow is too slow to create the menu on my machine. I'm at bare minimal hardware levels with my old Mac Mini.

Sorry, I didn't catch that. The drop down problem may be a bug that is solved in 4.5 (which I am running in beta). Glad things are workable for your now.

Wiki Getting Started with Logos => Home Page + First Steps includes: "Tip: Change Text Comparison link set from A to Follow for smoother scrolling in Bible. Optionally close Text Comparison since can highlight Bible verse(s) in Logos 4 and press F7 for pop-up Text Comparison of Top 5 Bibles. On Mac, if “Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard keys” in Keyboard preferences is unchecked, then (fn) key needs to be pressed with F7."

WIki => Getting Started with Logos has many more Tips and links, including excellent tutorial videos by Mark Barnes.

For some menus, anticipate need to click once, then wait for drop down menu response. Upgrading to faster Mac improves menu response times.

Living and learning wiki page was a bit misleading; the bold searches < > in list # 1 work in a Bible Search (of All Bible Text in All Passages for All Bibles):

1. References

General format is <datatype Op reference> eg. <bible = Jn 3:16>, <LN ~26.5>
Op can be ~ (intersection), intersect (full intersection), =, subset, or superset. ~ is the default.
Note many types are handled automatically, so <~Jn 3:16> or Jn 3:16 are the same and <G5547>, <H6213> are recognized as Strong’s numbers.
Louw-Nida ranges can be specified as <LN 57.125-57.129> or <LN 57.125-129>
TWOT ranges can be specified as <TWOT 1768-1768b>
TDNT Volume/Page can be specified as <TDNT 8.1>

11. Bible Search

It can be used with operators and lists #1 to #9.
Get lemma format <lemma = lbs/el/λόγος> by using Morph Search as above.
Note λόγος or greek:λόγος is a surface search!

This is not true on my system. I'm not sure if you are saying that I truly didn't spend hours reading and trying to get this to work or that it does work?

Either way, I cut and pasted all those syntaxes and the Bible / bible does not work in bible mode or basic.

James - KS4J did not mean any offense. When he says "living and learning," I believe that he is intending to say that he learned something new, or that something was clarified to him through his investigation.

Sorry you are running into difficulties using Logos. Chapter/Verse References do work in the search box as search terms (Bible Search and Basic Search are in the same window). The issue is the type of search someone does. Chapter and verses were added later, so they are not actually part of the Bible text to search for. They are a location in the Bible, not part of it. A Bible Commentary or Dictionary will have chapter and verse references within the text, so you can do a Basic Search John 3:16 and find a page of the book where John 3:16 is mentioned. But you cannot search say Baker Exegetical Commentary on Romans for page 3 because it's a location.

Bible search is like a concordance, in a hard copy of Strong's you look up the word "world" and John 3:16 would be listed as a location where "world" could be located. But you cannot go to an entry for John 3:16 in Strong's and find where it is mentioned...because it is not part of text.

I looked at the wiki , and it does seem to say that you can search for references in a Bible Search, but since there are no chapter/verse (verse numbers in Bibles are not searchable) that wouldn't work. I think the examples regarding Lemma's for Greek/Hebrew Bibles or Bibles with a Reverse Interlinear. But someone correct me if I am wrong you cannot do a Bible Search with a Bible Reference as your search term.

Maybe someone with more expertise in searching with Logos could add a clarification on the wiki.

That makes sense actually and Logos being a bit more advance (understatement) than what I'm use to (MacSword) it would not make sense to allow searching this way as it's not universal across the Logo library I'm guessing.

The wiki is a bit confusing though on it IMO. I guess what they are trying to say is that <bible = Jn 3:16> would look up that as "Jn 3:16" in the text of any bible query if it was actually in the bible as that search string which it's not, nor is any other CH/VS reference since they were added later.

I'm not sure the shortcut "bible" is working at all though. I just searched <bible = jehoiachin> and got nothing either.

I can can see where the wiki is confusing. In a Bible search you shouldn't need <bible = jehoiachin> when doing one. In the Bible search you can type "jehoiachin" and search. Since its a Bible search it doesn't need the term Bible.
