Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary

HI,

The more I watch the videos and learn Logos 4, the more I am amazed and thrilled. Well Done Logos! You have done most of the work for us.

I have a question regarding one of my favorite lexicons, The Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary:

In Logos 3 it would always come up in the exegetical guide as one of the choices. I have prioritized it in Logos 4 above the TDNT, etc., but it does not come up at all, no matter what reference I look up.

Could someone please help me get The Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary to come up in the Exegetical Guide?

Also, when I float the Info or Comparison texts into a window, I then right click back on the bar and click return to dock but it does not show both the info box and compare text boxes together like it did. Any clues here? Many of the videos (which are wonderful) show you how to get from point A to point B but then I need to get from point B back to point A and sometimes that is just not clear to those of us technically challenged.

The Anchor Bible Dictionary is an excellent Bible Dictionary/Encyclopedia. I have learned much from it, even if I feel I have only scratched the surface. However, it is keyed by English terms. Logos Exegetical Guides are designed to go to the original language as much as possible, and so will look for references based on the Greek or Hebrew. And so, the top links from the exegetical guides would be for references for these languages.

The best way to get around this is to put it in a collection and then attatch that collection to a guide. In 3.0, this would be a Pasage Guide, but now you can do it to an exegetical guide.

On the other hand, I do wish that there were an easy way to link directly ABD from Greek or Hebrew. Heck, TDNT has some significant Hebrew in it as well, and there are times I wish it could be a Hebrew link as well. But that is not the way they are tagged, and Logos is trying to keep the tagging to a consistent language, letting you go between languages pretty easy via RI's in Bible Word Studies.

While we are talking exegetical guides, why are we limited to three dictionary links for each word? This is not a bad default, but it seems to be asking for a "more" button.

Thanks so much for your feedback. I need Beginner Instructions as I never really learned 3.0 that long before the new 4 came out. I have Gold pkg.

I viewed the video on how to put it into a collection. How do I attach that collecttion to the exegetial guide? The video leaves that step out or else it went right over my head. Please use very simple instructions. Assume I know nothing! Many thanks, Catherine

Go to Guides. Click "Create New Guide Template". Click "All Sellections from Exegetical Guide". Click Collection, and pick which collection you want added. You can drag sections around into the order you want.

Now try running this guide on a few passages. If you like the results better than the Standard Exegetical Guide, rename your guide "My Exegetical Guide" and Logos will run your new guide instead of the standard one...

Oh dear I am afraid you lost me almost right away. I printed out your instructions and I found the "create a new template" and "all selections from exegetical guide"

Then I clicked collection and picked the one that just had the anchor bible and how do I add it to the standard exegetical guide?? I tried dragging the collection and different thingds but I am missing something here. Thanks again, Catherine

It sounds like you have created a custom guide. It should be at the bottom of the same menu where you found "create a new template".

Try running this guide a few times by clicking on it and then changing the biblical reference around to various sections of the bible. If it is working "right", you should have all the traditional exegetical guide information plus a section on the ABD where it will show you whenever it talks about your passage. Does this work?

Once you are convinced that this guide does indeed work and do what you want, then you want to rename it to "My Exegetical Guide." If you can't figure this out, let us know.

Hi Kenneth (or anyone else who is reading this and responding)

I got totally confused with the last message. I could not find a video on templates. However, I went back and created a new template called "My Exegetical Study" It has 45 resources (gold edition) including the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary. I do not know the books well so I have no idea if this is more or less than the default exegetical guide. I simply put in the search box: lexicons and dictionaries and took out a couple of Merrian Webster English disctionaries.

You are right in that now when I do a search, the "My Execgetical Study" comes up in place of Exegetical STudy. However, the AYBD still does not come up in the exegetical guide. When I tried to go back to the default Exegetical Guide it is BLANK - HELP please.

However, I did find out how to look up the AYBD while studying with the reverse interlinears whether in the exegetical guide or the passage guide. OK - I stumbled upon it like a blind pig gets an ocassional acorn.

In the middle top section where my Bibles are (I use Interlinear Bibles because I do not know the original languages) I just go to the English word either in the passage or in the box with the lemmas, etc, and right click on it and up pops a little menu and there, in the bottom section, is the AYBD along with other English lexicons and I just click on it and presto - it comes up in the middle bottom box. VERY COOL!!!! Of Course the selection of books that comes up is dependent upon the word you are right clicking on. I was on the Beatitudes and used the word Heaven which I knew to be in the AYBD. Clicking on another word allowed another set of books to come up. [:D]

What happened to the default Exegetical Guide and did I really mess things up and, if I go back to the default Exegetical Guide (once I restore it), will the AYBD still come up when I right click the English word in the Bible Interlinear box? Did I break my new Logos 4?? Happy about the AYBD but a little worried, Catherine

No, you haven't messed anything up ... you just got confused. Under the "Guide" item you will find that there are 2 divisions - the top half is the standard defaults; the bottom half are the ones you can mess with/customize/screw up [depending upon how close you get to what you want. [:)]]

You may have saved a workspace that brings up your customized version, but you can simply build a new one with the default by (1) bringing up what you have (2) open the default (top) guide (3) close the customized guide and (4) save and name the new workspace.
