Duplicating Visual Filters

Is there a way to duplicate visual filters, or make copies? For instance, I am making one that has a lot of different markups (precept inductive Bible study markups). When I turn it on, I don't want to wait forever for it to mark up the whole Bible, so I thought I would make two - one for OT and one for NT. But I don't want to redo all the associations if I can just make the visual filter once, copy it, and change the reference range.

Is this possible?

No. You would have to copy the relevant parts to a new VF.

When you set a reference range for a search, the Logos 4 search engine actually finds all results, and then discards those that don't fall within the reference range you've specified. So, counterintuitively, it's actually more efficient to have one search in "All Passages" in a Bible than to have two searches (one for OT and one for NT).

(Note: A visual filter for the whole Bible will keep the highlighting for the whole Bible in memory. So one good reason to set a reference range is to reduce the memory usage of visual filters (even though the search is less efficient). This would probably only be important if you had a visual filter that was highlighting > 75% of the words of the Bible, and had enabled it in multiple translations. In that case, what you'd probably want to do is make one visual filter, and edit its settings periodically to select the book you're currently studying.)

I should clarify that this should only need to be done if Support has definitively identified visual filters as a major consumer of memory in your setup, and that this is causing OutOfMemoryException crashes for you; this will not be a problem for 99% of users.

We've also already made some fixes (for 4.5) based on customer feedback to reduce the overall memory usage of visual filters.

Thanks, Bradley. That helps a lot. I didn't realize step 1 was filtering the whole Bible. Makes sense then (counter-intuitive as it may be) to NOT add a second step of chopping the results down to the NT or OT.

This machine is running 4GB of memory (and 4 GB of readyboost), so even my most intense filters haven't taken more than 8-10 seconds to populate, which I don't mind since I might only use those filters 1x/week.
