Sync behind firewall

Greetings,

I have been syncing my home pc and laptop install of Logos for some time now, but all of a sudden I can't get it to work here at work behind the company firewall. Eventaully I get the yellow cation with an error saying it can't sync, but I am guessing that it is timeing out. I have watched the traffic through the firewall and it looks to be be just TCP ports 80 and 443. I wonder what has changed and how I may work around it.

Most likely your Company firewall's policies have changed. I've not noticed any changes when using Logos at work or at home.

It could be that your company has simply blocked the Logos sync server - you could ask your IT department...

To be certain, turn on logging, and you'll be able to see the cause of the error in the logs (see 'How to ask for help', below).

No beta, version 4.3 SR-6 (4.30.0.1613).

That's the 'normal' timeout error. Can you access https://sync.logos.com/ in your browser? It should give you a 403 Forbidden error generated by an ASP.NET server. If it gives you any other kind of error that would indicate the cause of the problem.

I get:

Odd. That's what exactly what you'd expect, and suggests that if your corporate firewall is blocking, it's not simply blocking that address.

If you're firewall does content blocking, it's possible that your notes or favorites have a naughty word in it, and that's causing the problem. I once had a clipping from the Talmud which would have sent many corporate firewalls apopping.

If you know what you're doing, and your company's security policy allows it, you can watch the traffic with Fiddler2, but you'll need to follow their instructions for watching HTTPS traffic, and be undo the certificate changes you make once you've diagnosed the problem.

Other than that, I don't know what to suggest, sorry. It might be necessary to ring support to get it sorted.

I have watched the traffic via our corp firewall software, but haven't seen anything odd, just http & https traffic. I have a way to override the firewall (bypass the proxy and use traffic filters) and I can pretty get in/out unimpeded, but still can’t make it work. The odd thing is that it was working until a few days ago and I don't think any changes have been made to the firewall. ??

Is there some way I can manually sync the notes and stuff (via file transfer)? I really am worried about my notes getting hosed up in the process.

Tomorrow I will try a direct connect to the internet and see if that helps.

my knowledge base is VERY limited. But I had a similar problem. I contacted the manufacturer of our firewall/filtering device which pushes updates to the device. I asked them to whitelist logos.com and they could our device for the sites that were being blocked and opened them up. I have had no problems for the last year.

No, sorry. It has to go through Logos' servers. Perhaps whitelisting can help, as David suggested.

Thanks to everyone who helped, but it doesn’t appear that the firewall is the problem. I brought my old laptop in to work, updated Logos and it is syncing without a problem (behind the same firewall) so it must be the Logos install.... :-(

Now to figure out how to force a re-sync without actually reinstalling.....

If your corporate firewall does content filtering, it could still be a problem with the content of the notes you're trying to sync.

Now to figure out how to force a re-sync without actually reinstalling.....

It's a little dangerous doing this, but all your Logos notes/clippings/favorites/etc are stored in %localappdata%\Logos4\Documents\{random}\Documents

You'll see the folder structure is pretty straightforward, and within each folder are two files. If, when Logos isn't running, you delete the files (not the folders), you'll force a re-sync of that data. Just delete the ones you think are causing the problem, such as notes.

When I've done this in the past, it has caused Logos to crash upon opening. But next time I loaded Logos it recovered everything fine as it synced it down from the server. That may or may not be the case now. But I'd certainly take a backup before attempting this.

Of course, deleting these files will also delete any notes that are on this computer but which haven't been successfully synced yet.

Thanks Mark, deleting the Notes allowed the sync to complete... However, not all of my notes "files" synced back. I have a "Translation" note file that synced back blank on the PC I am having trouble with but it seems to be fine on the one that does not have a problem. So I guess that pretty much confirms that it is a sync problem and not a firewall issue. Now to get both installs on the same page....

Glad your back in action. The entire sync process is being rewritten for Logos 4.5, which is currently in beta, so syncing should be much more robust going forward.

Yes, notes and highlighting are coming in the next major version - hopefully before the end of the year.
