Extremely Upset

All I did was open preferences, turn on internet, check for updates to Logos and resources.
None available at this time-cool, no issues with that.
Open Logos preferences, turn off internet, close Logos.
Restart: Logos try's to open as a little (approx) 11/2 inch square in lower left of screen ( all you can see is very top of panel), try to pull it up, it crashed.
Restart Logos: same thing, just let it sit a min -crashes.
Restart Logos: same thing, try to click on green button to resize-crashes.
Restart Mac, make sure everything else is off, no programs running.
Restart Logos: Same thing, no matter what I do-nothing, just a little bitty box that crashes if I do nothing, if I try to resize, if I try and anything or do nothing, it just crashes.
I have WORK to do.
I am so tired of this I cannot even speak words to express how sick I am of this.
Everything else on my Mac is working perfectly-No Issues.
This is not a toy for me, this is not a "fun program" for me, this is not something to play with, for occasional use, these programs are part of my WORK, my vocation, my livelihood .
I am just sick.
I have now spent an hour of my "work" time, yet again, and have absolutely nothing to show for it other than frustration-no work done.
All I did was turn internet on and check to see if any of the resources I am already paying for were up for delivery yet, then turn internet back off.
Help would be appreciated if available. ( I know Logos is closed on weekends, so : no help there).
Again, Program will not load, cannot give screen capture, will not stay open long enough.
Thanks.
Sorry for the rant, know it's not the fault of any of you folks- just frustrated and yes-angry.

Rusty - Sorry you are having troubles. Have you tried using a blank layout? The wiki gives the following advice for turning on logging (one time) + using a blank layout:
To turn on logging, launch Logos 4 Mac, then quickly press and hold command key until Sign In appears, release command key. Optional: click “Use Blank Layout” Click Sign In
macOS, iOS & iPadOS |Logs| Install
Choose Truth Over Tribe | Become a Joyful Outsider!0 -
Thanks: Unfortunately thats not working either.
Got a blank Logos once, but without even a blank layout. Did have toolbar functions though, tried to load a layout-crash.
Now will not even load blank layout through function you listed.
Just sick, another evening of planned study just wasted.
Cannot get logging file.
This is best I can give:

Got it to load "blank layout" again. Loaded Passage guide, added bible pane.
Entered scripture reference- works.
Cannot load "any" layouts, even blank two pane, three pane-any of that.
Guess all saved layouts corrupt ( even defaults).
Thanks for the help.
Time for bed now, too tired to continue. Lost opportunity-sad.
Really do appreciate the help.

Looking at posted time, recognize Logos Mac Support phone line closed for weekend; can call in 3 days.
Wondering about toggling diagnostic logging ? (seems diagnostic logging can affect code execution a bit).
If diagnostic logging enabled, would like to look at crash in log files.

Hang in there. I don't know if misery loves company or not, but I have had the worst week that I have ever had since I bought into Logos over 10 years ago. With this service release I have had multiple crashes. I have had a mysterious problem which no one can explain with one of my interlinears and now I have lost all of my collections. After a couple of hours on the support lines, problem is every one of the Logos solutions are for me to get to a high speed internet connection to sort it because dial up speeds are impossible to update things. In late December I'll give it a go, but like you... this is not a toy, this is an important tool. Fortunately I have another Mac Bible Program which I am falling back on, but it does some of the resources Logos has.
I am writing this not to rant, but rather I am hoping that 'Houston' knows we got problems. I know not everyone has problems, but some of us do and I for one look forward to an update which addresses some of these problems.

Thanks Palmer. Like you, I need some of the resources Logos has. However, I think I am about done. It does not matter how many resources one has , if they can't access them. I have crashes daily, literally everyday. I cannot count how many hours of study/prep time have been lost trying to get Logos to work, those hours are "nonrefundable " , can't get time back.
The software seemed to have a lot of potential and Logos has the Titles, it's just too bad the software is so poorly written.
I will spend the weekend thinking and praying on it, but pretty much think I'm through playing tech each time I want to study/prep for sermons/classes, I just don't have the time, I need to actually get work done.
Blessings all.

I had a similar thing. I deleted the icon from my Applications folder and redownloaded L4 Mac, that fixed it.

Wonder about a bootable Snow Leopard partition ? (vis OS X Lion)
My wife wants a stable Logos 4 Mac for daily use; hence chose to wait on OS X Lion upgrade since she was the primary iMac user. Thankful for God's provision of an older MacBook Pro; planning to upgrade iMac to OS X Lion soon (with a bootable Snow Leopard partition on an external drive).
Note: over the years, have learned waiting to upgrade Apple OS can avoid some headaches (same statement is also true about Windows so many businesses wait for a service pack or two before deploying). Likewise learned to keep a copy of previous bootable system in case newer OS had issues.
Am aware OS X Lion has some nifty interface improvements: e.g. Mission Control. Personally value Logos 4 Mac usability more than OS X Lion; plan to upgrade my wife to OS X Lion after reading (or verifying) Logos 4 Mac behaving nicely on OS X Lion.

I'm sorry you're having troubles. I've looked over the logs and this doesn't appear to be an issue that we have seen before.
If you run "uptime" from Terminal, what output do you get? (Uptime gives a message about how long your system has been running). For example, my system shows:
7:25 up 9:57, 2 users, load averages: 0.11 0.15 0.19
If it's been a while, you might try rebooting.

Not using outboard monitors with Logos anymore.
Have rebooted Mac, over and over- see first post.
Was doing similar crazy stuff with snow leopard .
Have tried putting Logos engine in trash and downloading new one, installing( see other threads for first time) have done this repeatedly.
It is not my Mac, it is not Lion.
Have talked to Apple, had my machine checked.
Note: I do not have a single solitary program on my Mac that does not perform up to scale other than Logos-Again-None, nada, nothing. Everything else runs fine.
Logos WAS working-poorly- but working. It almost always crashes on start-up, at least once.
I have everything turned of to where it is "bare-bones" so it would work.
All I did was turn on Internet in Preferences, rebooted Logos so it would work, checked for updates, turned internet back off, restarted Logos and it has not functioned properly since.
It is not indexing, it is not downloading, it is not doing anything.
Hope that helps narrow it down.
Like others- I do not think Tech support comes here anymore, but if they do, this is something that should be fixed in my opinion .
Thanks to all for the time taken, you are appreciated.

No on Heat Issue. logos has always hit my processors at around 160% on start-up but usually settles down in a few min. I usually start it, let it crash once or twice, then it will load, I get a cup of coffee and by the time i am done with that it has settles in and gotten down to reasonable processor usage.
Thanks

Thanks to all. Tom, No apology needed, just didn't know if you had read first post.
Do not have time for going through all the "hoops, downloads, setup" for all those: logs, files, etc. at this point, perhaps tomorrow after all services done and I have had time to breath.
Can use Accordance just fine to finish tonight ( just miss the resources I had planned on using), so I can function ( was upset about losing the time and effort and, spending these type of funds and not being able to work.) ( I work a lot guys, Some say too much-smile).
At any rate, I can function and will get back to you perhaps later tonight if time presents itself or, late tomorrow.
Again, Thanks to all for "Your Time and Efforts", you are all appreciated, wish we could have fixed it together! smile.

I don't seem to be having any problems with Logos but I am curious about this.
Thanks

The linked discussion is about Xcode 4 having dropped support for a development feature that Logos uses. Xcode 4 is required for the use of some programmer features that were introduced in Lion.
Having Xcode installed should not affect using Logos or any other end-user application.

To all trying to help with my issue: Did not have time tonight to figure out all the log retrieval programs/issues.
( man, did not know I was signing up to be a software tester-smile)
Will do tomorrow if possible.
Question: This goes to the discussion that seems to come up on almost all threads relating to Apple changing code for Lion and that making things hard for Logos:
It seems most companies were made aware of the coming changes and, most were ready for Lion and were quickly , if not immediately , OsxLion Compatible.
Is there some reason this information/code was not made available to Logos?
Were they unaware, caught by surprise?
Not sure I understand that whole situation, almost sounds like it is Apple"s Fault.
Did Apple do something shady, unethical, which made it hard for Logos to get up to speed with the new and still be compatible with Leopard, Snow Leopard?
Just asking,,,

In danger of sounding like I am not sympathetic to the challenges of Apple's practices which effect developers, I am afraid that I agree. OSX Lion was in public release in July. This did not happen yesterday, last week or last month even in terms of full public release. I deeply respect the Logos developers for not making excuses or whining about Apple as anyone in development knows, this is just one of the ball games you have to play on this platform. Microsoft has its own issues if we want to go there as well. All of this is off topic and really for another thread and in my opinion should not be used to invalidate frustrations that users have in regard to unmet expectations, loss of time and work in regard to using Logos 4.

Everything else runs fine.Yep, pretty much a fact there, been true since the beginning of this L4-Mac fiasco. That is why it is no longer my primary Bible Study software but something I use for the unique resources that are offered via community pricing. Made an investment in a true Mac platform program and now have equivalent resources with it to do all I need for Study and Teaching preparation.

It is not really anyone's shady intent, it just happens in the software industry. Mac OSX 10.7 Lion introduced new problems that Snow Leopard did not have. And there are quite a few companies that are playing catch-up. Check Adobe's page for their compatibility problems with Lion. I can vouch for several Adobe/Lion problems first hand. AutoDesk is another product line I use that doesn't run well under Lion.
I do not know if Logos has had any delays with the Apple app store but I found this article interesting.

Agreed, this is not uncommon with new versions of operating systems. HOWEVER, interesting you would point to a page on Adobe of 'known issues'. As a user, before I upgrade, buy new equipment or even purchase software, I always check these pages to see if I can live with the risks and shortcomings. What are the 'known issues' of running Logos on Lion and where would I find it? If I was a new Logos user (and some who come here frustrated are), this should be disclosed in the technical specification page. Certainly any Logos user who decided to upgrade to Lion should have a resource to look to for making an informed decision. In advance, I apologize if this exists, but I am not aware of it.
Additionally, can we verify that all the issues we have faced since July have all been associated with OSX? I would maintain that some of the issues we struggled with before this update came out, though it certainly seemed better before Lion came out, but this is anecdotal and not based in any evidence.
I'm not being antagonistic towards Logos and I suspect their developers are some of the best in the industry (I haven't met any of them). I just hope for a better day that on at least the Mac platform that the software is as good as the awesome resources you can purchase. I would suggest having this reputation is yet beyond us, but I am grateful that we do have a Logos Mac package to talk about. Looking forward to a better day! [:)]

I am running the latest beta so I do not expect things to be perfect. I have had 4 crashes in the past week (unexpectedly quit)… and I usually leave it running in the back ground and quite often 7-8 times a week i come to it and it says it is not responding. Now I will admit none of this type of thing ever seems to happen with Accordance but they are mac only and have been programming it for over a decade. Mac Logos is very new, I am not sure ANYTHING was even salvaged from the Libronix 1.2.2 program which in many ways I liked better than Logos 4 (in basic interface purpose). It felt very mac like and Logos 4 Mac well more mac like than Logos 4 Windows still feels slightly alien in it's interface to me. I suppose I am just happy that Logos 4 mac is to there and rarely crashes on me during my usage. Crashing while it;s running in the background and I haven't touched it for several hours is something i can live with. Again coming to it the next day finding it telling me Application not Responding, is something I can live with (today was an exception, it is still up and running and responding normally)…….

And Xcode 4 was released nearly a year ago with betas released a year and a half ago. Unfortunately, Logos was using one of the few features that got dropped completely to which there is no easy way fix. However, the inability to use Xcode 4 does not make the code any less stable, it just means they can't use that tool at this time and so doesn't figure into the current equation. (This may not be what Keep Smiling meant to say, but it could be read that way.)
Fr. Charles R. Matheny said:It seems most companies were made aware of the coming changes and, most were ready for Lion and were quickly , if not immediately , OsxLion Compatible.
I'm quite sure that Logos was no less restricted than the rest of the developers. For $99/year you too could have signed up to get access to Lion at the same time the companies you mentioned got it. Apple does on occasion give early access to companies who have software that Apple wishes to use to show off new features during the announcement. However, they usually only get advance access by a couple of weeks and usually a couple Apple developers are assigned to help get the code up to speed in time for the keynote.
Also, OS X Lion _compatibility_ (that is the ability to run an application on Lion, crashes and buggy functionality are fixed) can be achieved with Xcode 3. There can be, however, lingering issues that are tough to resolve
To implement OS X Lion specific features, however, does require Xcode 4 for the vast majority of features. And here, one will need to be patient for Logos to find a way around the missing feature in Xcode 4.
Knowing where Apple is going is the art of reading the tea leaves. Allow me to read some:
If Logos isn't working to move their codebase to work with the LLVM compiler, they are already behind. GCC has already been dropped in recent versions of Xcode 4. There is a GCC compatible version of LLVM that is bundled and I expect to hang around for quite some time, but vanilla LLVM is the future and there are new developer features in Lion and iOS 5 that require it.
With the entire Mac line now on 64-bit processors, I believe that we are now in a short grace period with regards to 32-bit compatibility. I fully expect OS 10.8 or 10.9 to drop support for 32-bit applications or to at the very least aggressively pushes developers to move to 64-bit apps.
The guiding principle in both of these predictions is: If a technology is in anyway obsoleted by better technology, expect Apple to drop or reduce support for it at some time and probably fairly quickly. Examples: Floppy drives, CD drives and Carbon.

1423.LogosLogs Rusty Matheny 20111205-193926.gzThank you Daniel: To me, this means that Logos is not up to speed yet with technologies that are "on the way out" and, not up to speed with technologies ( coding wise ) that are current and evolving and, are therefore way behind on being ready for the future.
This is certainly what "seems to be the case" from what I have gleaned from watching the forums for some time now.
Ok, moving along to the current crashes :
I finally loaded a new blank layout and constructed a new study. Now, I cannot use word study tools, when tried, Logos crashes.
If I highlight a word, right click for menu, then choose Exegetical guide-Logos crashes.
If I try to load Exegetical guide (with or without highlighted word, for left resource panel )- Logos Crashes.
If I try and go back to one of my old layouts-Logos crashes.
Now attaching Crash reports ( I think )

Don't get me wrong, there is still a fair amount of life left in the tech that Logos is using. And the core tech, Cocoa, is not going to radically change or go anywhere any time soon. There are also legit reasons for not rushing into some of the new stuff, however with others the writing is on the wall and one better start thinking about where the puck is going rather than where it is currently.
What is going on in Logo's collective head with regards to this, I don't know. What I do know is that it seems that going from a Windows-only show to a Windows and Mac show tends to be difficult. I don't think it is because Mac development is harder than Windows (though I couldn't say for sure), but rather that its different. The tools are different, the code is different and the user and developer cultures are different. It's difficult to wrap your mind around a different way of thinking when you are so used to another. In a way, what I think part of what we are seeing here is a bit of a culture shock on Logo's part. It's not a problem unique to Logos either. Unfortunately, when running a business you either figure out how to swim or you sink.
An example of the different culture:
Microsoft is generally loathe to deprecate any of their tech in Windows in fear of backwards compatibility. This means that developers generally don't need to work hard to keep their code up to date and are able to focus on other things, but it also means that a lot of cruft is holding the platform back in areas that are not obvious to casual observers. Fortunately, with Windows 8 they seem to be making an effort to clean up a bit.
Apple is in general always eager to move on to the next thing and keep the tech pretty well polished and free from cruft. This also means that developers need to keep an ear to the ground, stay informed and be ready to move with their code base and that some user-facing tech is dropped before the users are ready. Personally, I tend to prefer the Apple way as it keeps things mostly clean and tidy.
I do, however, expect that most developers will support the current and the last one or two major versions of OS X. If this means limiting the use of new features, that's fine as it is that much more to test. If the developer has the resources to support new features and still support old versions of OS X, great, if not, I understand.
Fortunately Mac users tend to update their OS much faster than their Windows brethren.

I agree with much of what you have written here. At least when it comes to OSX and Windows, the challenge is to create 'two streams' of development philosophy to accommodate the culture of each domain. I don't know much about the handheld market, particularly in relation to Android. However, when I hear people pushing Linux as the next desktop environment for Logos, aside from the business plan side of things making this near impossible, I am very sympathetic to Logo's reluctance to open up yet another stream. At least for me it is much easier and simpler to focus!
I do applaud Logos for seeking to become a truly multi-platform developer. This is not an easy undertaking, but it is the future. Not only are they doing this, but they are attempting to have virtual feature parity and release new versions pretty much simultaneously. This is ambitious and VERY commendable.
Being a multi-platform developer is a big plus for another reason. If users are spending a lot on electronic resources, this should be a concern to them. Let's face it, there's no guarantee that Windows or Mac as we know it today will exist in 20 years from now. What then will you do with your good old Anchor Bible Commentary that you spent nearly $2K on? [:)] Being with a company that has the ethos to develop for emerging platforms means that your investment is probably a bit more safe.
Of course one other danger is that of Logos being bought out, making the Pritchett Brothers fabulously rich. Rewind to 15 years ago when Quickverse was bought out multiple times. In my view they were never the same... the premise of 'buy outs' is that the parent company won't change the company, but in my limited experience, rarely does the company keep it's original heart and soul. I can list several brilliant little software companies that have been snatched up by some of the biggies and we lost that niche entirely or it's a shadow of its former self.
Anyhow this is now waaaaay off topic. Sorry to ramble.

Rusty,
It looks like your keylinkmanager.db is corrupted. That is used in lots of parts of the app and would probably explain why you're having such instability.
The file in question that you need to move out of the way is in /Users/rustymatheny/Library/Application Support/Logos4/Data/unxu6v29.yyq/KeyLinkManager/keylinkmanager.db.
If you rename this file to keylinkmanager.db.bad, the file should be reinitialized when you restart. You might have to reprioritize your resources.

Dear Tom: It was a nice try-smile- but nothing has changed.
Here is a log ( I think )

I just tried removing Logos and re-installing the engine.
No change.
Thanks.

Reinstalling won't help, because the problem is with one of your specific databases. I thought it was the keylinkmanager db, but obviously not. I'm out of town right now, so I can't look into this as much as I'd like but I'll see if one of the other devs can look into your problem and let you know which database is causing the issue.

I will try changing that file again when I can get a min.
I have re-installed and have done a permissions repair, so perhaps changing the file now will make a difference.
Are there any cache files i should clean out prior to changing the file?
Thanks,

Logos4.log file has a database malformed message while processing a Key Link Query for a Word by Word section in a Guide.
Also noted Indexer.log and Logos4.log files have:
Found existing database at /Users/rustymatheny/Library/Application Support/Logos4/Data/unxu6v29.yyq/KeyLinkManager/keylinkmanager.db
With Logos 4.3 SR-7 closed, wonder about renaming keylinkmanager.db file (or moving file to trash), then launching Logos 4.3 SR-7. If crash again, please post new set of logs, which should have creating database keylinkmanager.db message in a log file plus crash information.

For me, frequent crashes and having to force quit an app are major problems.
Thanks Dan for clearing this up for me.

I've had some word from Development that it looks like you are having an issue with the Word by Word section in the Exegetical Guide. If you know what resource you have set for that section you can delete the milestone index just for that resource. Otherwise, you could delete all of the files in the following folder:
/Users/rustymatheny/Library/Application Support/Logos4/Data/unxu6v29.yyq/ResourceManager/logos
So, close the program, delete the appropriate file(s), and when you reopen the program they will automatically rebuild. That should resolve the Word by Word issue, but if you continue to have other troubles, Development would appreciate new log files after rebuilding the milestone index/indices for further investigation.
