Will it fit on my PC?

Hi,

Been doing lots of reading about 4, and I'd really like to take the plunge. But before I order it and start the process, can someone give me some rough expectations on whether there's enough room/horsepower on my system for it? I don't want to run out of room, and I don't want to end up with a complete install with 2mb of hard drive space left, either. I'd like to know what to expect for both the download, and the subsequent indexing processes.

Here are some statistics:

The PC: Pentium 4 1.7ghz, 1 GB RAM, 80GB Hard Drive, 10.3GB free

Logos 3 Resource directory, 1,172 files, 5.25 GB used.

I have no clue about whether you can afford a new computer, but I was in Best Buy today.

They had a 4Gb of memory, Intel Core 2, 360Gb hard drive for $560 bucks!

Since I bought mine two years ago for $900, I was quite surprised.

The point of my rambling is of course, to suggest you upgrade. I think your memory can work, but 10 gigs is not really enough to work with. Your really need that much, just for operating your machine (swap files, or whatever).

My "Logos4" folder is 11GB. I'm at Silver with 890 resources.

It looks like 10GB is not enough...

It would be a real tight fit. It would probably fit IF you deleted L3 first. I guess the new collections add about 4 GB new Graphics resources. Most logos4 files are a bit smaller than thier old lbxlls versions, but there are also some exceptions where Logos has added the graphics that are in the original books, so we are probably talking about 9 GB of resources. And you have to have room for the index file...

My library is 9.03 GB. My index file is almost 3 GB. I am down to a bit over 5 GB of free space and Logos complained the last time it was re-indexing because it was running out of room because it kept the old index until the new one was done. If there is any way to free up a couple of GB, it would be good.

On the other hand, Hard Drives are pretty cheap, especially for Desktops.

My 4.0 Resource file is twice the size of my 3.0 file, and I only have 7.8% more resources in 4.0 (in actual count). So I'd guess your 4.0 resource file would probably be close to 10 GB without increasing your actual number of resources. The rest of my Logos 4 install takes less than 200 MB.

4.0 was designed to run well on machines two years old and younger. 1 GB of ram will not be enough and your processor speed is low. I really think you'd be very disappointed with Logos 4's speed on your machine. Sorry.

Remember that disks are not really designed to work well when they are more than about 80% full. Running higher than that is just asking for issues. Disk upgrades are pretty inexpensive, even in these challenging times. Memory is pretty inexpensive, too, as is an overall upgrade as has been noted.

But, as a technology professional, I realize that not very many know that having space left on a disk isn't really enough.
