PCIe SSD: What size is optimal for Logos 4?…

I'm looking to purchase a smallish PCIe SSD Card for my new computer and am curious what size is optimal for storing Logos 4 resources. My computer is a mini-Tower design and I do not have a extra drive bay.

Out of curiosity, what are people's experience running Logos 4 from largish SD Cards? My Logos collection download is listed as 10.25GB. If this is feasible and accomplished I'd prefer to keep my lone PCIe slot for future fun.

Am I neglecting some aspect of performance improvement by thinking in terms of Logos 4 application alone?

PCI-e solutions can be up to 4x faster than normal SATA SSD's but you pay for it!

You cannot boot from PCI-e so you cannot improve computer boot time; which is possible if you got a SATA SSD large enough to replace your conventional HD. However, can you afford a larger SSD compared to a 80 - 120 GB PCI-e SSD?

Personally have Logos 4 custom installed in a 40 GB Fast partition on my physical hard drive (outermost area of drive), which has 8 GB pagefile and 12 GB free space. My Logos4 folder uses 19.4 GB of disk space.

My Dell laptop has an available Sata III drive bay, so if was shopping for SSD, would look at:

that includes has a $ 25 rebate so 60 GB SSD with read and write transfer speeds near 500 MB/s has a net cost of ~ $ 81

Better price per GB is a 120 GB SSD for $ 159.99 (with $ 30 rebate):

Appears Gateway SX2370-UB30P has Sata II (300 MB/s) => http://us.gateway.com/gw/en/US/content/model/PT.GCRP2.002

However, smaller Sata II SSD drives have noticeably slower transfer speeds than Sata III transfer rates of 280 MB/s so spending ~ $ 20 more for a drive with nearly twice the capacity plus faster transfer rates seems prudent.

Oh, BTW. Seems like a good place to ask, What are people's thoughts on shutting down computer. I generally keep mine on 24/7 so boot speed isn't terribly important to me.

Regarding PCIe drive size for Logos 4 alone, 80-120GB seems excessively large to me. Obviously the smaller the drive the smaller the price which can be significant for Solid State. Do I really need many times my Logos 4 file size? I want to allow for future resource purchases, but want to get by as cheaply as possible now too. If I go the PCIe route, I really think Logos 4 resources are all that I need to allow for.

Also, I have to wonder, wouldn't throwing them (Logos resources) on a 16-32GB SD Card accomplish much of what I'm after?

Looking at a blog with SD Card transfer speeds => http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/reader_report_multi_page.asp?cid=6007-9438 noticed transfer rate noticeably slower than SSD. Also, wikipedia has SD Card rating speed chart => http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital

If was shopping for USB 3.0 flash drive, noticed 32 GB for $ 29.99

Gateway computer has couple USB 3.0 ports (blue inside connector). Caveat: USB 3.0 flash drive transfer rate is noticeably slower than Sata III SSD.

KS4J, do you have any way of articulating what those speed differences would mean in practical terms? I'm enjoying such wonderful performance on my new computer as configured that I might as well take a few months, or longer, to enjoy what I have now, I'm thinking. How easy would it be to move my Logos resources over to my 16GB SD Card to get me a taste?

The impact of transfer speed differences depends on how much and often need to transfer files. Launching Logos 4 opens many database files. Opening a resource for reading includes file transfer. Searching transfers index file(s). Initial file transfer needs to access storage medium; repeated access can often use a copy in memory.

Option: create another Windows user, then use Method 1, choosing to install Logos 4 on SD Card. Would close Logos 4 before copying Logos4 folder to SD Card.

For speed comparison, could copy Logos4 folder to another location on hard disk, knowing that copying files on same hard disk transfers files into memory then back to hard disk, which can take longer than copying files to a different drive.

Having two users on one computer with same Logos 4 library allows you to switch between users to compare how Logos 4 responds. Caveat: if Use Internet is Yes, be aware of sync surprise potential (e.g. editing notes for each user quicker than sync propagates can be surprising). Personally have learned when using more than one installation to avoid opening same items after experiencing surprises in Library prioritization when was changing priorities in one installation while Library prioritize was open in another.

A little USB 3.0 FYI.

The blue connector convention isn't a given nowadays. Learned the hard way when salesman in store went looking for all his machines with USB 3.0 using the blue connector assumption. We almost thought that a few USB 3.0 capable machines had wrong specs noted because of lack of blue connector. Some machines are now marked with SS[USB logo] and bypass the colored connection convention.

I restart mine daily (at 3:30 am). To do that use Task Scheduler and create a task to start at the time you want and set the details to something like this shutdown.exe /r /f . In this case the /r switch tells shutdown to restart the machine. The /f switch tells it to close any programs without warning (unsaved data will be lost) that might be running at the time. I just need to remember to save everything before I walk away from the computer. This is my habit anyway, so it's never been an issue.

Restarting is a good thing to do once in a while as it helps get rid of temp files, lets Windows let go of other files it's been holding onto unnecessarily, refreshes the RAM, unsticks any programs that are stuck (and may be running in the background) and more. BTW, if you're having any sort of computer problems, the first thing to try is to reboot the system.
