Calvin's Commentary format?

I was wondering if Calvin's commentaries are in one file or are in 46 different files? It never seems to say on the Logos site. As you start to build a descent collection having so many different files is beginning to become cumbersome. I believe Schaff is eight volumes but shows up only as one file. Simeon is 21 seperate files but I wish it was just one. That is how It should be. Anyone have the answer? I was thinking of getting the Calvin collection because of the Christmas credit.

They are in twenty volumes as shown below (including the survey volume, Calvin: Commentaries, which isn't very useful, IMO):

I wouldn't avoid a resource just because it comes in multiple volumes. They are built that way because Logos also sells the volumes individually, plus the page numbers work better as individual volumes (which I think probably match some print edition).

(FYI, I have over 4000 resources, and I don't find them cumbersome. Try putting books in collections as you purchase them--that will help you find things.)

I don't really need just another set of commentaries, but would be tempted to buy them if it aids in understanding Calvinism along with the text of scripture. Calvin's commentary is very theological. I recommend them.

FYI, the Calvin: Commentaries volume I disparaged in my first post might be of good use to some. It is organized topically. Each topic has excerpts from his commentary that deals with that topic. Plus, those excerpts are in a newer translation. Here is the TOC:

I had Calvin's commentaries on my shelf for years, but rarely accessed them because the in-print format was very cumbersome and hard to use. But since I have had them in Libronix and then Logos, Calvin's commentaries have quickly moved up my prioritization list. Calvin has proven incredibly helpful as well as pastoral time and time again.

Calvin's Commentaries truly are a must-buy if you don't already have them

They are available for free on the web, but of course the web versions do not integrate with Logos. If you want Logos integration, you'll need to pay for it. Logos incurs a cost to transcribe, proofread, and tag the resources. Feel free to use the web versions. In fact, if you want to create your own "personal book" version from those sources for your personal use in Logos, you may do that too, but be aware that even some of the free versions on the web have a copyright associated with them.

I am not a Calvinist. I am a Wesleyan - Amrinian. So take that into account in considering my opinion.

Yes, Calvin's Calvinism is always present, but it does not dominate the text. Calvin is more concerned with the meaning of the Scripture that promoting a particular theology. Though I am not Calvinist, I find his commentaries very helpful. I read them and benefit.

I think Calvin's Institutes is the place to get a good understanding of Calvin's system of theology.

This might upset some, but I don't think Calvin is as Calvinist as some of his fans. For example, Calvin and Spurgeon have the same passion for God as a Wesley. Spurgeon and Calvin are both Calvinists that a Wesleyan can love. There is a heart for God that transcends theological differences in a Calvin or a Spurgeon. It is the kind of heart for God that united Wesley and Whitefield. Even though they sometimes quarreled over theology, their common passion for God always drew them back together. At Whitefield's request Wesley preached his funeral. On the other hand, there are the extremists in every theological camp who cannot fellowship with anyone who does not agree 100% with them.

Thanks Michael, (and everyone who responded to my question) I appreciate your honesty and openness. I rub elbows with more Armenians than Calvinists in the circles I'm in. I've always thought that a tension between the two was closer to the truth. But yes love for God and man transcends all that, God is personal more than academic. I'm aware of the basics of Calvinism but would really like to understand it better. (BTW I was raised Southern Baptist & went to a Free Methodist college, then on to a Southern Baptist Seminary) I have Calvin's Institutes, guess I need to dust the digital dust off of them.

There is much contemporary misunderstanding with respect to the distinction between Calvin and Calvinism. 5 point Calvinism came about only after (and in response to) the 5 points of Armenianism were published. This occurred in the year 1618, and you'll note that Calvin died in 1564, so this response was a distillation of the intensely pastoral and theological teaching of Calvin. There is much to recommend both camps... and a very great deal of misinformation about both camps. I highly endorse the Calvin commentaries, which will almost certainly help to clarify what Calvin actually taught and his Scriptural perspective.
