Bug: L4 is timing out so it now takes more time to start

Did the boot-up for L4 change? It now takes over five minutes to start. And it now states that it is synchronizing. Here is the latest log file.

Note: To create this log file. I closed all of the books, notes, etc... so L4 would open right to a blank layout. I closed L4 and then restarted L4 to create the log file.

I personally do not like my programs to take a longer time to boot-up than it does my computer.

If my laptop has been off Beta 10 takes about 35-40 seconds for the program to open (I open to a blank layout); after that it takes about 20 seconds. I have not reallly noticed any difference in start-up times since the early days of L4.

I agree it would be nicer if the program started faster and functioned a little snappier (is that a word [:^)]) but I am not experiencing anything like you are describing. Hopefully development can see something in your logs that will help you.

I timed my blank opening on my new PC with an SSD drive: 20 secs to a blank layout.

I was super-surpsied it could open almost 60 resouces (my standard layout in 4 windows) in 15 seconds. That's amazing.

One thing for users to keep in mind if this is on a laptop, it the power profile you may be on. I just tested the difference between running my laptop on "power saver" (35 seconds) and "high performance" (20 seconds), so this setting can make a difference. I also had other processes running besides Logos.

That being said, I always run the beta versions and in doing so have noticed that one beta may "lag" in startup or resource transitions more than another. It is not uncommon in beta testing and should be expected as new fixes and functions can add new bugs.

20 to 30 seconds is a lot shorter then 5 minutes plus.

It is sad that I can start L4, go to the bathroom, pour a cup of coffee, go back to my computer, and L4 has still not finish booting up.

Tom, It's what I suspected. It takes 5 minutes to sync your Notes (5.5m to open the main window).

The timeout occurs immediately after the Notes have sync'd. Wonder if that occurs all the time?

Do you always use the Startup Window i.e. start with CTRL held down? Or does Logos always show you that window?

Can you upload a logos4.log from a normal start (no blank layout).

We'll look into why you are getting the synchronising message every time.

In the meantime, you can close that window, and Logos 4 will open normally (and continue to sync in the background). For best results (i.e., fewer sync conflicts, having the latest data available before the main window opens) it's best to wait until sync finishes, but you don't have to wait if it's taking a long time.

I always try to remember to close out everything when I close L4 so that it starts faster. I am assuming the Startup Window you are talking about is the window that asks you to sign in. I am assuming the Startup Window you are talking about is the window that asks you to sign in. I only get this when I am in a location where I do not have internet access (which is once or twice a month), and I do not hold down the CTRL key when starting.

It was unusual to see the message "Showing startup window LDLS4.Startup.StartupWindow" after sync'ing had started as it had not happened with me. But I got it on my last restart and there was no visible startup window. Like yours the message occurred roughly 20s after starting. When I started with CTRL held down I got the expected startup window after 5s. Hopefully Bradley can provide an explanation.

Just for some additional info, I use L4 for Mac and I have experienced agonizingly slow start up as well. The sync message occurs at every start up and it takes every bit of 5 minutes to be operational. Frankly that is unacceptable performance. It is not just a Win problem apparently.

This sounds like the third major change to the sync process in under two years. For me, this is another example of the code first - and design it later; another example of poor stewardship of resources.

I've noticed that returning focus to L4 causes a check for syncing ... something that threw me at first because I took it to be still syncing.

Not true. I have not touched my notes the last several weeks, but L4 is still syncing my notes over and over and over and over again.

Using a Logos 4.5 Beta 11 configuration without sync issue, am noticing many items syncing quickly. Apologies: also not experiencing ~ 5 minute wait for Logos server timeout while processing items for sync to download.

Caveat: appears if sync encounters an error, then syncing stops. Since sync not working, setting Use Internet to No would avoid startup timeout.

Personally I do not use notes, hence I'm not experiencing sync issue. Thankful for visual filter highlighting and personal books.

For those experiencing note sync issues, wonder about a workaround of disabling sync (e.g. set Use Internet to No) until Logos development has a fix to test in a 4.5 Beta release ?

Note: Mac Beta thread => Slow Start Up has sync issues in logs, which show sync batches from over a year ago are downloading again and being reapplied. Wonder if some note content is reverting back to a previous version from old sync data ?

We've made a number of improvements to Notes sync on both client and server, which should help this run a lot faster. Can you report if startup time has improved with the next beta?

Windows Vista 32-bit on an ASUS Laptop, 4 GB ram, little else loaded other than Logos 4.

Updated to Logos 4.5 Beta 14. Let Sync finish (a few seconds). Exit.

Re-Start Logos 4 takes approx 15 seconds to open back to the Library page it was on. Sync completed within 1-2 seconds.

However, the important point, I only have about 10 Note files and they are all tiny. So think of the above as a baseline startup time.

Will do. I have deleted all of my note from L4, so I will have to re-import them. I will re-import them after the next beta is released, and I will provide Logos with all of my log files.

The first sync (after import) will take a long time, because all that data has to be uploaded. But once that first sync completes, I expect that it should be much faster to stay in-sync than it has been with previous betas.

When I import my notes, I have to let L4 run all night because it takes hours to import my notes.

I forgot to say that everything is working after I installed the beta. I will also say that the sync process is much faster than it was.
