I am a student of the Bible and plan to purchase a verse by verse commentary set. I desire to narrow the list down to commentaries that match what I believe. I am/believe:

-Premillennial

-Eternal Security of the Believer

-Salvation by faith alone, in Christ alone, by grace alone, apart from any human work or effort.

-Dispensational

Thanks very much for your feedback!

This is certainly not a very in depth series, but it does cover most of the books in the Bible.

    I almost forgot:

You would probably really enjoy John MacArthur's NT Commentaries:

Also the Bible Knowledge Commentary (this is probably part of you base package already):

I am a seminary student who happens to hold to all those positions.

These commentaries consistently do hold to those positions.  I recommend them for interested Bible students/laymen.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary which is found in most Logos packages.

    The Grace New Testament Commentary.

    Tom Constable's Expository Notes.

Regarding MacArthur, it should be noted that he is an advocate of what is popularly called "Lordship Salvation" as opposed to the "Free Grace" position advocated by say Charles Ryrie.  I don't know if that fits into the original poster's beliefs or not.

In the hopes of brining this thread back from such a poor highjack attempt:

The Expositior's Bible Commentary Volume is also a very good suggestion.  I bought it when it was still published by Pradis and will not buy it again.  Another option is also the Theological Journal Library which will give you access to the BibSacs, Grace Journals, as well as Chafer Seminary Journals.  They are initially a pricey down payment but the investment is well worth it.

As others have mentioned, John MacArthur. I'm not a Dispensationlist, so I consider this one of this few faults. :) Nonetheless, he would be a good resource, dispensationalist or not.

I have wished that there were more pro-dispensationalism resources in Logos, providing more for those of us who want to know more. I've read a few dead tree books about dispensationalism, but the resources in Logos are a bit more limited. A more recent resource on the subject (I believe the author is not a dispensationalist, but he does seek to provide a fair treatment of the discussion): A Complete Guide to Understanding the Dispensationalist Controversy, http://www.logos.com/product/6498/a-complete-guide-to-understanding-the-dispensationalism-controversy

Giovanni ... you're just not very fair, demanding consistency on the forums, and even worse quoting from the NT.  But I was surprised you didn't run with your Deu quote on failed prophesies. I have to assume you drew the line at that point.

Welcome to the forums - I recognize this isn't your first post but it is the first I noticed. In light of the history of recommendations in the forums, I'd like to point out that a good commentary set is not going to be totally consistent and is not going to always confirm your beliefs. It's good for a first set to come from your own tradition but don't set unrealistic expectations as to what that means when the rubber hits the road.

Some really good suggestions that fit your guidelines have been given.  Bible Knowledge Commentary and the Everyman set both sound like just what you are looking for.

John MacArthur has been suggested.  I love John MacArthur, and John MacArthur would consider himself to believe in "salvation by faith alone, by grace alone, apaprt from any human work."

You may or may not agree with John MacArthur.  While he does believe in salvation by grace alone through faith alone, he also believes that grace transforms a life (2 Cor. 5:17) and that good works are the inevitable result of true salvation.  Therefore, MacArthur would say that it  is impossible over the long haul to know Jesus as Savior without also knowing him as Lord.  That is what I understand MacArthur to teach.

I am not trying to hijack this thread or argue the point.  I just want you to have a feel for whether or not you might consider MacArthur's New Testament Commentaries.  He is an excellent Bible teacher, and I say that though I disagree with him about  several things.

Also, the new ECC is going to largely fit the guidelines that you have given.  The overwhelming majority of writers are in some way related to Dallas Theological Seminary, which is very dispensational.  It will likely become the standard dispensational commentary set - though a few volumes will be written by non-dispensationalists.  I believe only a couple of volumes are out now.

While I by no means want to discount the value of exegetical support for your own position, I have found that I have learned much from those I disagree.  Admittedly, there needs to be enough commonality in position to understand where people are coming from, but talking with others helps you to understand your position.  You may even learn something.

The reason this is true is because people are/believe what they have been taught, either directly or by book.  I do not mean this as a criticism, but no one became dispensational without the influence of someone else. Luke 6:40  Matthew 10:24  It is hard on our pride, but the "I" in I believe is really what someone else taught them.  Back on topic, personally I would consider building a commentary set book by book and hand selecting them.  However, that is difficult in Logos and is definitely more expensive. If it could be done, you would have a more usable set.

    Also, John Walvoord has written:

It varies from contributor to contributor.  I believe the contributors for Thessalonians, Revelation, Genesis are.  I know for certain that D.A. Carson who did Matthew is not.

Tom Constable's Expository  Expository Notes on the Bible is probable the most comprehensive on dispensational theology and free grace (over 7000 pages of notes) on the entire Bible and the best value only $40.  I would also recomment Zane Hodges Commentaries on James and 1 John, they can be purchased individually or as part of the  Robert N. Wilkin and Zane Hodge collection.  In this collection there are 3 other books dealing with the security of the believer and rewards.  Also Charles Stanley's book on Eternal Security is excellent.  The Grace New Testament Commentary was written entirely from a free grace and dispensational position.

The book of revelation is Pre-Millennial but not dispensational and not Pre-Trib  but the commentary on 1 Thessalonians is Pre-Trib and dispensational.

I actually worked my way through his notes again this year as I read my way through the Bible. I suppose Darby did.

Whether or not that is true, I know you can change your theological beliefs from dispensational to nondispesational simply by the study of Scripture and prayer, without being taught by another human being.  I know that because  I did.  Later I found many confirming witnesses to what I saw taught in scripture, which happen to go against my tradition.

Not looking for a debate about dispensationalism.  I respect those who disagree, and godly people do.  Just wanted to affirm that our belief system should never be just what someone taught us.

A little good inductive Bible study is far more influential that any teacher.  Commentaries should be avoided until after a good inductive examination of the text.

If one is simply going to impose his own theological system upon the text, then study of the text is just a waste of time.  A great theologian once said, "I don't want to close my mind so tight that I can't get any ventalation in there."

Amen!  Enjoyed your post.  Apostolic tradition can keep us from err, but our goal should be to be taught of God.  (John 7:17)  I believe we honor Holy Spirit when we seek Him for truth and understanding.  To only follow man's teaching, dishonors God and leads to darkness.  Once you choose to follow a certain line of belief or doctrine, it is like taking a fork in the road, it becomes harder and harder (but not impossible) to get back to the true way.  Many do not realize they are interpreting the Bible with their theological system rather than letting the Bible interpret itself, along with Divine illumination.

Thanks very much for your feedback!

Why do you need Christ if it's faith alone?  Or why bother to mention grace if it's faith alone?  Do you even understand the meaning of words  and how they are used?  If the doctor prescribes medicine to you and asked you to take it with water alone, why would you even bother to say "oh but I can take it with coffee alone and with milk alone?  Sounds contradictory the way you're putting it.   Well...everything that you believe/are is contradictory because from my understanding premillennialism and dispensationalism not all believe in eternal security; in fact they teach the possibility of being lost if you are not faithful,  you can get a second chance during the tribulation if you get "left behind," but even then you're not guaranteed salvation.   Anyway by the way, I guess you  forgot to add confession alone  or maybe you don't need it since just those other things alone will suffice...LOL... Alright,  I'll leave you alone and yes this time I'm using "alone" in a different sense. 😜

    Hi Dal,

You must be unaware of the 5 reformation solas: they are not contradictory or redundant but complementary.

    • Sola Fide, by faith alone.
    • Sola Scriptura, by Scripture alone.
    • Solus Christus, through Christ alone.
    • Sola Gratia, by grace alone.
    • Soli Deo Gloria, glory to God alone.

I am aware that English is a 2nd language to you but I wanted to let you know that the way you have phrased your 3rd question is derogatory and insulting - "Do you even understand the meaning of words..." As well as that, your 2nd statement goes against forum rules - "Well...everything that you believe/are is contradictory because from my understanding premillennialism and dispensationalism not all believe in eternal security."

I am a firm believer in the doctrines of grace but I've always been challenged by the saying, 'Having received God's grace, we need to be gracious.'

I would recommend the following to get you started: John MacArthur NT Commentaries on Matthew, Thessalonians, and Revelation; the Bible Knowledge Commentary, John Walvoord has a Revelation commentary, and Thomas' Exegetical Commentary on Revelation.  All are premillenial and dispensational and have aided me greatly.  I'm sure there are a few more but my brain doesn't work as well in the mornings :)

PS You can also try these shorter monographs Hixon What Lies Ahead and Rogers Unveiling the End Times.  Charles Ryrie and Lewis Chaffer are also good choices when it comes to Theology if Dispensation is your thing

No, never seen any Solas in The Scriptures; perhaps because men "reformers" came up with such things and it doesn't matter how they want to explain and claim the word "alone" doesn't contradict but supplements is just not true. Faith without works is dead and by no means by itself (alone) will justify anybody. Interpret or misinterpret these questions however you want but have you not read that in the Sola Scriptures? Why not add the other supplements? e.g. Works alone, confession alone, repentance alone? There, call it derogatory or not but I just poked a huge hole in your logic! Why claim the others supplement but these others don't? Exactly! Because when men try to "rearrange" God's Word they always tend to leave something out for their own convenience sake. Thanks for your post, though...really enlightening 😉

Here's some food for thought: I wonder what Jesus and His inspired men meant when they used the word "if" in many of the promises found in the Bible...e.g. "Blessed are you IF you do these things..." "IF we endure, we shall reign with Him..." etc. I'll give you the references "if" you want so you can look them up 😁 But what "if" you don't want them; exactly, then fine I will not give them to you tadaaaaa 😂 Do me a favor, show me some grace and don't bother replying. Thanks!

    DAL

Ps. By the way, I'm aware of the solas, solus and solis but not because they are taught like that in the Bible, but because I've studied the reformers 😜

I generally do not recommend Calvinistic writers because many of them become so consumed with TULIP and supralapsarianism that they allow these faulty positions to taint their writings (Sproul is a classic example; if you have ever listened to him lecture [and who wouldn't LOVE to hear that brilliant man lecture!?], he cannot say 20 words, unfortunately, w/o bringing everything back to Calvin, whom he often seems to admire more than Christ. Loraine Bettner is worse - he cannot say 2 words without doing so, and has consistently said and write that the only true expression of the Gospel is Calvin's Calvinism).

But I respect J Mac...he keeps his (not-so-desirable) view of soteriology in check and does not allow it to taint the rest of his theology (for example...he is a pre-millennialist, while most serious Reformers are amillennialist). His commentary set is solid and thorough. He doesn't write with the hidden agenda of converting the world to Calvinism as some Reformed writers seem to do.

Jon Courson has an EXCELLENT set, and very affordable, although it is almost entirely application in nature, and very little true exegesis.

    https://www.logos.com/product/54016/coursons-application-commentary

The Baker Exegetical NT series is a solid set. Some of the writers are all over the board on views, but it is a good set nonetheless. It is a very thorough set, and is truly exegetical in nature, whereas the Courson set is MUCH lighter as an application-only set.

    https://www.logos.com/product/55025/the-baker-exegetical-commentary-on-the-new-testament

This is a good set, as well, though somewhat dated:

    https://www.logos.com/product/55024/the-new-american-commentary-series

I have found that as long as you are solid in your positions, you really dont have to be quite as concerned about the theological positions of the commentary writers (within reason, of course [for example, I would not tolerate to listen to a heavy Calvinist writer if he or she started peddling double predestination and how God gets desired and INTENDED glory from the condemnation and eternal judgement of a reprobate - that's just to absurd to read through!] ). But I really don't filter my commentaries by whether the writer is Baptism, Pentecostal, Methodist, etc. I think that there is so much we can glean from men and women of varied positions, like j-Mac.

As such, consider getting a commentary based on its approach to commentary (critical, exegetical, application), as opposed to their theological positions. I think you would be more well-served that way. Just something to chew on....

PS: For the always-passionate Calvinists who read this reply, PLEASE do not reply here with a debate or an attack. Please. I will not debate you. I learned long ago that debating a Calvinist on Soteriology is a futile task that only serves to burden the soul. :-)

Yes. Miller's commentary on Daniel is pre-mil and "dispensational" and one of the best commentaries I have read on the book. However, I would have liked it more if it was more technical.

You have improved, that's for sure, but not quite there yet 🙂. I commend you for the emphasis you make on searching the Scriptures (Acts 17:11 - My favorite verse). Will continue to pray for you 👍 Keep searching daily!

I realize this is a dated thread, but wanted to reply to Jerry by saying, I agree and disagree. I cannot speak for anyone else, but have to say that I was not influenced by book or teacher to come to a premillennial dispensational viewpoint. I was not raised in church and grew up in a very small rural town that only had two very liberal churches. I did attend one of them as a child, on my own (parents were avid non-believers). No Bible reading, praying, or church on TV--it was forbidden. I became a believer after following my fathers ways and realizing the life of an alcoholic was not for me. I felt dirty, gritty, and unclean. I did know I could ask Jesus to forgive me and I did at age 20. He touched me in an amazing way. I set out to buy a Bible and read it from cover to cover over the next ninety-days. I did so, and read it four times. I came away from that Bible believing in dispensationalism, but being untrained, did not know this was a theological technical term for believing as I did. I am proud to say, I still am to this very day.

    God Bless and Maranantha!
