Slow Indexing after rebuilding index...

I know this gets posted on every now and again but yesterday I rebuilt the index on my laptop (for Logos) and it ran all day and only indexed 25% or so. Today it has been running for 3 hours and it is sitting at 8%. The CPU is working hard (running at 50% only Logos running).

I have a HP laptop running Windows 7. 4 gig RAM and an i7 processor. I have never had indexing trouble slike this before.

I have a similar sized home pc (with a newer i7 processor) and it did the same job in an hour or two.

Can anyone help me out?

Is anyone able to help me out? It is now 2 hours later and it is still at 20%. I am worried something might be wrong with my computer!

Nothing else is running ( I have checked the Task Manager). The Cpu is running consistently at around 50%)

Why would the indexing be so slow?

Your indexing log began at 23:29 and continues until 23:48 by which time it is 2.7% done. That does seem a little slow for 2,500 resources on an i7, but when indexing has only just started, it's difficult to tell. You only need a few very complex resources in the first batch, and it will throw the estimate off. In this case AFAT, BDAG, BDB and The Bible Knowledge Commentary all took a long time, which is quite normal. But you don't have many resources like that, and I would expect the speed to increase slightly during the indexing.

On closer examination, you have had a series of crashes. That probably means your indexing has been restarting, which is why it seems so slow to you. If you're doing a rebuild of your indexes this shouldn't happen. It might be worth running an error check of your hard drive to check for disk errors. If that doesn't pick anything up we'll have to manually delete all your indexes and try again.

Your books are indexing a lot slower than I would expect. (As you said, your other computer took an hour or two.)

Resource Monitor can be a useful tool to diagnose this situation. Is there anything else on the system using a lot of CPU? Ideally, Logos4Indexer would be running at 100% CPU usage (4 core system) or 50% (eight core).

If there's nothing else using CPU, the problem could be disk I/O. Again, check for any other processes using a lot of disk.

If there's nothing in the list of processes that looks like it's taking computer resources away from Logos4Indexer, then it's possible that hardware issues are causing the slowdown. Check Event Viewer to see if there are any errors (from the hard disk) logged in the System log. You may also wish to run some basic housekeeping tasks like chkdsk and defragmenting, to see if that helps.

Thanks Mark and Bradley.

The resource monitor tells me nothing else was running. I did run a virus scan and found 3 virus'. It was nearly midnight so I went to bed. This morning I have started it up and tried again. If it doesn't work this time I will do as you suggest Bradley and do a dick clean up etc.

This morning the resource monitor tells me the indexer is using around 45% of the CPU and nothing else is using it (Same as before). It tells me the Memory is using 440,000K The next program is dropbox using 23,000K but running no CPU.

The other thing that does happen is if I start Windows media while indexing the sound is jumpy and distorted. It can't be a speaker problem because it works fine at other times. Just throwing this one out there!

I will leave this for an hour or so and check back to see its progress.

I would say it does as a rebuild is as if i indexing for the first time. regular is not. ( i think)

By definition, Yes. Every book is re-indexed in each of 2 indexes (one for bibles only, the other for ALL resources).

"regular" indexing does not do this.
