I like a good deal just as much as the next guy. However, the recent tsunami of offers to hit my inbox has led me to ask the question 'is Logos in Trouble'?

If Logos is in trouble, what would happen to my purchases. Paper books are mine forever, whatever happens to the publisher but electronic ones are at risk if the company goes under. Sure, I could keep running the software but I would lose e-reader capability on iOS and as operating systems get updated, i would have to maintain a legacy system.

Am I being paranoid?

'is Logos in Trouble

This has been asked a few times for the same reasons as you give, but there's no reason to think so. Logos always give great offers at Christmas (12 days has run for years, for example) - the only difference this year was the flexibility that they offered. Instead of giving one or two really, really great offers (at 90%+ discounts), they have the flexible Logos credit offer (at 30% discount). The personal sale was designed to get people talking to sales reps, and was particularly for those who felt overwhelmed at the choice available.

Sure, I could keep running the software but I would lose e-reader capability on iOS and as operating systems get updated, i would have to maintain a legacy system.

There's some truth in this, and again there's plenty of discussion on it in the forums. Briefly, my response would be (1) Logos appears to be a very healthy and well-run company; (2) Whilst it's not too big to go bust, if it did, I'm confident another company would love to pick up the pieces (and the userbase); (3) The liklihood of Logos going bust is probably far less that the liklihood of my house catching fire and all my paper books getting burned. There's risk in everything.

No, I don't think Logos is in trouble. I think 2011 was the Year of Marketing.

Logos was involved in a lot of infrastructure changes - updated Logos.com, launched Vyrso.com, new sync 2.0, Proclaim, PB, BibleFiles.com, etc. All these are Logos' overhead.

No, I don't think you are being paranoid. We always need to concern ourselves with the protection of our personal content and purchased resources. Never hurts to have those backups and a copy of L3 handy.

I hope the BIG announcement has to do with Platinum getting new books added to replace the Baker titles it lost and us current owners of the Old Platinum with Baker content get new books for pennies on the dollar and the New Platinum owners with no Baker content get a free upgrade to have access to those books. Does that sound fair enough for all of us? [;)]

I've got to say it surprises me how many posters with VIP stars have of late been making so many strong statements about aspects of the current Logos products, and the weaknesses or failings of those products.

If some of the most supportive, knowledgeable and big-spending customers are that unhappy, I want Logos to step up to the game and do something.

Maybe its time to call a council and lock everyone in the room and no one gets to leave until there is a bunch of solutions. What Microsoft did with Windows NT with Dave Cutler way back in history.

Given the mention of Logos 5, I would not be surprised to see Logos 4 rewritten not using WPF as a base and renaming in L5 to separate it from the problems related to the WPF. This is pure conjecture and I'll admit to batting about 0.1 when it comes to predicting Logos.

We never did get Logos 4 working with Microsoft .NET 4, as far as I know. Good thing Logos 4 is not using Flash or Silverlight or some other platform not widly supported. Oh - did someone say WPF?

If the logic of how things work is abstracted enough away from the raw plumbing, a port to any new platform should be not too hard. If however, its deeply intwined to WPF in the kinds of ways have been suggested that L3 was to Internet Explorer, then its a whole new game!

My main wish for any new Logos 5 and for that matter, Proclaim, is that they use the Cloud well, but can run stand-alone for periods when that is desired, or during periods of infrastructure outages. The products need to work well enough when the network is not connecting, in my view.

Windows Presentation Foundation is the "graphical" backend of Logos. There's more to it then that, but that's good enough for a quickie. :-)
