Indexing seems confused

I installed L4 Saturday. Since then it has supposedly been indexing. However something seems wrong.

This morning when I hovered over the task tray icon it tells me I have about 4 hours to go. So I leave the machine running and go to a meeting. When I returned 7 hours later the icon is gone and there is not indexer running in the task manager. The "First Time Indexing" message is also gone from the home page so I assume it has finished. I type a word into search and get no passages found but do get a message that searching may be inaccurate until indexing is finished.

So I close L4 and restart it. When I do it again begins preparing my library. The icon now shows about 2 hours until complete. I check again later and it's up to 4 hours. At the moment 5 hours and 18 minutes remaining.

Can anyone tell me what's wrong? I have never had a program take so long to install and present such curious behavior.

Logos will reindex (in part) when new resources are downloaded, or a new version of the program is released. This is probably what happened to you.

The time estimate for completion of the index can be wildly inaccurate. They are working on making it more accurate, but for now you can't fully trust it.

As for the loss of the tray icon, sometimes Windows will hide an icon that hasn't been used for a while, so it may just be hidden. Also possible is that the icon display was interrupted by your computer 'going to sleep,' or starting a screen saver. I've noticed odd things like that happen with other programs. A background program that normally displays an icon in the tray is running, but no icon is displayed. Weird.

Without knowing more about your computer spec's, and the number of resources you are indexing, I can't tell you if your indexing time is normal or not. It does seem within the range of large libraries in older, or underpowered computers. Running L4 on a Mac through VMware (or similar) is known to be very slow, e.g. Some netbook users also report sluggishness with some systems.

Hope this helps. If you have more questions, report your computer spec's: RAM, version of Windows, HD space available, Video RAM, CPU speed, etc.

It is a good idea to disable automatically installing windows updates while indexing. I tell Windows to let me know if there are updates available. Then I download and install them when I choose. Automatically updating can force windows to restart in the middle of an index, requiring the indexing to restart (and possibly corrupting the index).

There are only a few suggestions about anti-virus being a factor in indexing speed. If you have 'on-access' protection, it could be a factor, but it would be better to tell your anti-virus to ignore the Logos4 directory, than turn it off altogether (IMHO).

It's also the case that many computers are set up to run things in the background while the computer is unattended for a certain amount of time (defragging, backup, virus/malware scan, etc.). This could also be a factor, depending on the actual programs that run this way.

Well not quite confused perhaps. More of a bad guesser.

The time you see is calculated based upon an average of how long prior documents took to index.

The interlinears are particularly large and ferocious, that will make the indexer report a longer time. If the next few books it indexes are simple, then it will report shorter times. Bring on yet another really hard one and the estimate will rise again.

It's not an exact science, and the art isn't all that good either.

Just hang in there.

HP laptop

AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile

1.6 ghz 1.32 gb RAM

49 GB Hard Drive with over 2 GB free after installation

Windows XP Pro SP3

Previously ran LOGOS 3 Scholars Gold without any problem.

Task Manager shows that the indexer is consuming about 60% of resources.

Shows 5hr 21 minutes remaining...

This could be a big part of the issue. That's a very small HD by contemporary standards and a very small amount of space left. Without any "wiggle room," the indexer is going to bog down. Adding more RAM could help but you don't have enough room for a standard paging file to make it worth the upgrade (page file sizes increases with RAM). Your other spec's seem within range, though your CPU is a bit slow as
well, though as I look at your spec's it's your lack of hard drive
space that's causing the biggest bottleneck at this point. If you could double your free HD space, you might notice an improvement in indexing speed.

Logos3 was not nearly as demanding on technology as Logos4 is. L4 is designed for computers 2years old or less (excluding netbooks), and a bit more 'umph' than what you have at the moment. With Christmas coming up, you can get a lot more computer for under $1000 than what you have right now (under $500, if you don't need top of the line), you might try dropping a few hints. [;)]

(XP was the OS that gave me the intermittent issues with taskbar icons disappearing.)

EDIT: And uh, yeah, I'd expect a computer with your spec's to take about as long as yours seems to be taking.

A couple of points. When the task bar icon disappears from the tray the indexer also disappears from the task manager.

I do have an external HD with 1 TB with probably 90% of that available. However I would prefer to have the program on the machine itself since it's easier to grab and go. The TB drive is not out of the question if that is what I need to do.

New machine is possible but only after I get a new one for my wife and get my son into college, and paint the house and fix the car and etc.

Anyway, I have shut down everything I can except for the necessary processes. Showing 3:49 now, let's hope this is it.

I hear ya. I have one son entering college next year, and another entering seminary. Both are in need of new computers. Thankfully, the Lord has been generous enough with us that we can do this for them.

By the time you would finish moving things over to the external HD, you'd probably be done, so just keep practicing that fourth fruit of the Spirit until then. L4 would work much better on your laptop drive than from an external HD, so once you've been through the initial pain, you should be good to go.

Probably a few months from now you may need to reindex - L4 will create separate indices for new and updated resources until it reaches a certain %. Then it will tell you to 'merge' your indexes (which you could do before then). I'm not sure this has been tested, so I don't know how it will work. But eventually you may want to merge your indexes anyway to save some HD space, and to speed up L4.

When you decide to reindex your entire library it would speed things up, if you could move as much as possible to your external hard drive -- even temporarily. My index file alone is 2.7GB (and I have about 10.7GB - 2608 resource files - in my resource directory). With only 2GB left on your HD, this could be a significant challenge to L4! So the more space you could free up the better. You could also (temporarily at least) move out all your L3 resources (the move them back after indexing completes).The next easiest way to get a lot of free space is to move media (pictures, music, video).
