I'd also like to be able to change the Type designation for any given resource. Are either of these desires CURRENTLY available in some form or another?
No, they aren't. If you'd like to suggest them, start a new thread in the Suggestions forum. I think I've heard the "sort by type" request before, though I can't find it right now.
I don't recall anyone ever asking to be able to change the Type of a resource. Can you give an example of when this would be useful to you? The Types are strongly tied to internal code that knows how to deal with resources of that type. For example Bibles can be navigated by verse, Timelines are...well...timelines. Devotionals are tied to the calendar. Commentaries can be linked to Bibles to scroll with them. Encyclopedias are referenced by headword. Etc. I imagine there are some types which are reserved for potentially different behavior which appear to us to be otherwise indistinguishable (Dictionaries vs. Encyclopedias, for example), but if we were to go messing around with the Type assignment of those, chosen by Logos, who knows what might break internally down the road. I am guessing they will not want to give us this freedom.
We can create Personal Books of any type. And we can suggest that a particular Logos resource that we think is wrongly categorized be reassigned to a different type (on the Metadata Correction Proposals page on the wiki). That's probably a better approach than what you're asking for, however I'm still interested to hear how you envision using this. I might be missing something.
Rosie, search your Logos Library for "study bible" and, if your resources are anything like mine, you will see similar resources under Bible Commentary and Bible Notes Types.
Handbooks, too.

Rosie, actually you are refuting yourself with the link to this page, as you know well how fast these suggested corrections are made. Changing the type ourselves would allow bringing clarity into the library.
Since I upgraded to Catholic Scholars I know that the Dictionary vs. Lexicon vs. Encyclopedia thing really is a mess - Logos decided to revamp the structure some years ago, but didn't do this to all resources, so I now own dictionaries for ancient languages from the same author in multiple type groups. I also own hundreds of "bibles" since some papyri are classified as such (and I think three of the Classic Commentaries on Genesis). I'm not even sure if the OED and the Merriam-Webster English dictionaries have the same type. Not all calendar devotionals are classified as such, and we know of commenatries that are simply running as "monographs".
I am sure you are right that Logos don't want to grant us the freedom to make a mess - but then we expect them to either don't make a mess in the firstplace or to correct errors afterwards quickly.

I don't find this group too contentious; 1 x non-lexicon ("Building your New Testament Greek Vocabulary") + 4 weak ones (2x Strong's, Vine's, Mounce's). What are the dictionaries in multiple type groups?

I hid the Targums + Earliest NT Manuscripts to avoid these 130 bibles which are probably Ancient Manuscripts.

This is the area that Logos do not want to arbitrate --> "Further breakdown of the Commentary category would be somewhat arbitrary, so it’s better left to user discretion via tags." as long as they have a Bible index. But this area is a mess.

Found many resources with Bible indexing. Personally have created a Commentary OR Notes collection using rule:
Type:(Commentary,Notes)
the Dictionary vs. Lexicon vs. Encyclopedia thing really is a mess
Personally updated my Lexicons collection rule to include some language encyclopedias:
Type:(Dictionary,Lexicon) OR (Type:Encyclopedia AND Title:(Greek,Jewish) AND Title:(Defined,Dictionary))
Appears monograph commentaries lack bible versification tagging. In contrast, Bible Commentary and Bible Note resource types have Bible indexes.
For example, "Explorer’s Bible Study: Gospel of John." is a monograph that lacks versification tagging.

More specifically, I'd like my search results GROUPED by Type.
I'd also like to be able to change the Type designation for any given resource.
Can't this be accomplished with mytag? I.E. mytag:typeCommentary, typeBibleEnglish, etc
I have confirmed further filtering by using AND, OR, ANDNOT purely with mytags

It is limited because your typeBibleEnglish will not be treated as Bibles in Bible Search and their drop-down lists, but you can prioritize any commentary as a bible and lookup a passage from the right-click menu. Passage Guide treats Bible Notes as commentaries, so you can always have a commentary collection with resources of type:Notes. Changing the type designation of a monograph will not make it a commentary, though (it has to be indexed by Bible data type).
I use mytag to exclude commentaries e.g.
type:commentary ANDNOT mytag:Notes
