Netbooks and Logos4: Logos, stop shooting yourselves in the foot!

I keep hearing from Bob and co. that they didn't intend Logos4 for
netbooks. Even if this is true, it is surprising to me that they would
continue posting this publicly. Netbooks are a significant market
segment at this point that is quickly growing. Even if you didn't have
netbooks in mind when you designed the program, a large number of your
customers are running your program on their netbooks.

If I
were you I would quit downplaying Logos4's usefulness on netbooks and
start highlighting the netbook friendly features of Logos4, like the
simple UI, the reading mode, multi-monitor support (many of us netbook
users run external monitors), DVD-free installs (once you offer it you
can also brag about 8gb Logos4 SD cards), etc. I cringe whenever I read
someone from Logos say that Logos4 isn't intended for netbooks. I can
only imagine that some netbook-only users who would be perfectly happy
and blessed by the software will be turned away by these comments.

PS. It seems strange that a user had to develop a workaround to make it easier for the minimally tech-savvy to install a fully indexed library on a second machine.

Logos needs to develop an easy backup and restore program/process through which it can be moved from one computer to another via either external hard drive or home network. I can easily install Logos on the secretaries computer (which is much faster than mine - and she'd never know it was there) and use that as my base install for transferring to my notebook and netbook. I'll do this anyway, but I wish there were an advanced menu item for such things.

I couldn't agree more. Perhaps it is a sign that I am getting old, but this "cloud" thing seems less than idea. Maybe someday when everyone can enjoy 12Mbs broadband, but I am stuck at 3Mbs for the time being and these mega downloads are killing me. When I think about the prospect of all the L2 and L3 resouces someday being converted to L4 I shutter to thing about how big that download will be. There are many L2 and L3 resources that I have removed from my hard drive, for example the GS edition of Calvin's commentaries. I assume someday this will be converted to L4 and because they are in my license file they will be downloaded. The download problem for people with large libraries will only get worse with time. I hope Logos makes backup/restore a priority.

Logos have provided cloud resource management as a cure for user-level management, so they have already provided a backup, restore and sync facility! But each user should always backup/image their hard drive just-in-case.

However, the pragmatics of installing to netbooks and even laptops without a massive download and lengthy indexing have lead to a user-level solution and we do that at our own risk.

I realized that the program backs itself up using the internet and that is the problem. This is a great feature for the future but I have over 20GB of data in my data directory. To expect people to download everything and index again every time they purchase a new computer or intall on multiple computers is asking too much. I thank you for your user-level solution, my hope is that there will be a Logos solution.

I now got Logos 4 running on my primary desktop PC, on a big notebook and two netbooks. The only problem I got on the netbooks was when I tried to reindex. The machines simply stalled or frozen completely.

BUT, if I copied the data directory already indexed on my desktop PC, to the netbooks, then L4 run flawless and the syncs are really fasts. My netbooks are a Dell 10 mini and a MSI Wind-100U, both with Atom N270 (1.6Ghz), 1 Gb RAM and 160Gb HD.

So my humble advice: never reindex on a low-end machine. Use a powerfull hardware to do this and then copy the indexed data.

I run it on a netbook every single day and do not find it underperforming in the least. The indexing takes about 24 hours though, so just leave it running overnight. After that, totally fast. And that solution doesn't work for everyone... I purchased Logos 4 on November 5th and it still isn't working on my primary computer. I have to upload a file to tech support tomorrow and have the developers try and find out what the problem is.

I've installed Logos 4 Plantinum version, totalling more than 9 gigs with other resource files, on my Netbook with Atom processor and 2 gigs mem.

It works OK. Sure not as fast as my quad speed desktop but it does work fine.

It just took hours of downloading the installation files and indexing after installation, which also happened to my quad core 8 gig desktop.

As far as I know only the first indexing takes so long.

Give it a try!!!
