Logos/Vyrso for Android 0.9.4 Beta 1

We have released Beta 1 of 0.9.4 today. This will be a non-market release.

If you wish to participate in the beta, visit the appropriate link from your phone to download it:

There is no auto-updating, so check back soon to see if we have released an update!  When 0.9.4 officially releases, it will be put into the market as usual.

Important installation/update instructions for Kindle Fire users: To install the beta (or any non-market release) on the Kindle Fire, you must uninstall the Amazon Market version first. Similarly, when you no longer want the beta, you must uninstall the beta version *before* installing or clicking "update" from the Amazon Market. Future installations/updates may fail if you try to use the Amazon's market updater while you have a non-market version of an app installed.

  • Tap in each panel of a
split-screen view to navigate or change resources

  • Calendar signal events do not properly populate all the calendar fields on some devices (particularly 3.0+)
  • Cannot select signals with the trackball
  • Signals are not fully themed in low-light mode
  • Some Logos4Reference signals are not fully supported
  • Popups and menus do not display Greek and Hebrew correctly
  • Right-to-left text (especially Hebrew) does not display correctly
  • Poor network connection may show an error message

Hi David - thanks for this.

Tap on a panel to navigate or change resources

Can you expand on this - it seems to work as it used to?

Or does it mean that you can tap in each panel of a split screen to navigate or change resources?

    Thanks, Graham

    Hi David

Reading view image viewer (double-tap on image to open) – supports panning and pinch-to-zoom

This is nice - particularly on a phone-factor device

    Many thanks, Graham

Thanks fro the split screen and syncing between Bible and commentry David. Now just waiting on sync two, and the ability to read PBB on my tablet. Good job. Appreciated very much.

Yes, it means you can tap in each panel of a split screen. I'll clarify that in the announcement.

    Thanks for the support!

Split-screen panel linking (View Settings -> Link Panels)

Thanks for split screen and linking - works well in Vyrso on my Samsung Galaxy S, especially in landscape.

The beta will not install on the Kindle Fire.

It installed fine on mine. Used the link at the beginning of this thread. Once downloaded it updated to the new version. The "marker" in the bottom right corner which allows you to adjust the pane size was difficult to see and more difficult to "grab." Once I did, it works great. Make sure you have "allow installation of applications from unknown sources" in Settings --> Device set to On.

I can second that the handle is difficult to grab. It works well once open though.

One complaint I have had with iOS too is that if you close your second split panel for a bit (think days) and then reopen it, it doesn't remember the last open resource but loads the Summarized Bible by default. When this happens to me I am usually reading a Bible verse in the first panel and opening the Summarized Bible changes navigation in the Bible too. This gets pretty frustrating after it happens a few times. Really two things need to happen here; one, you need to remember the last open resource in the second panel even if it is closed for weeks. When reopening load that last resource. If the panels are set to link the reference point in the FIRST open panel should cause the newly opened SECOND panel to navigate and match. I can't imagine a scenario where someone would have a closed resource in that second panel and expect their open resource to jump to a new location to match the previously hidden panel. That is frustrating behavior to me.

Also, you might want to toggle the installing of apps back off when you are done loading Logos. There are some apps out there that don't play nice.

You have to type the beta URL exactly as listed as it is case sensitive.

It downloaded easy enough, but could not install. I'm running stock software....no root on my fire. I'll try sideloading and see if that makes a difference. Beta looks good on my Motorola Triumph [:)].

Downloaded and installed on my shiny white Galaxy S II Skyrocket (Had to give it permission to load non-market software).

Hmm Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

Yes. I usually use an iPad but have been working with a Kindle Fire recently.

Side loading on the Fire didn't work. Does anyone have the new beta working on a stock Fire?

    Thanks.

Yes, I went into settings (gear icon in menu bar) -> More -> Device -> Allow Installation of Applications and set it to on. I then navigated to the forums and followed the link to download the APK for the newest beta. It installed right away. I also have Easy Installer on the Fire but I don't think it is necessary.

Well....that's interesting. I have the Allow Installation of [Third Party] Applications toggled to on and have not rooted my fire. Mine errors every time (goes through the application installation with a final message that the application was not installed) whether downloading from the forum link or side loading from a working installation on my Motorola Triumph. Very Interesting indeed

Today will be my first chance to play with it.  I probably should take some notes on some first impressions.

BUT FOR THE RECORD: Logos was the very first app I installed.  [:)]

For Dr. Cozier: I had the same issues as you and went through the same steps as you. Like you, my fire is not rooted. I was finally able to get it to install by uninstalling the logos version downloaded from Amazon Market. The beta then installed without issue. However, the fire is telling me now I need to update my Logos at the Amazon Market. Oh well, it seems there is always a price for using Logos software in the beginning. I have logos on my iphone from the beginning of it's release and am still waiting for sync to be finished but that is another topic.

Installation went well on my Acer Iconia A500.  Is there any way to make "Jump to a reference" open on the  "other" screen?

From what I've observed the problem comes from a modified Android OS on devices that don't allow you to use Android Market. I have no issues installing the beta on my Samsung Galaxy phone.

Yes, thank you, I will add this to the release notes.

To install the beta on the Kindle Fire, you must uninstall the Amazon Market version first.

Similarly, when you no longer want the beta, you must uninstall the beta version *before* installing or clicking "update" from the Amazon Market. My understanding is that there are problems that can occur if you try to use the market's updater while you have a non-market version of an app installed.

If you have the resource open in the "other" screen (and you're not already in the resource), then it will use the other screen. So, for example, if you have a commentary in one screen and your preferred bible in the other, then any reference jumps from your commentary will navigate your preferred bible in the other screen.

Is that sufficient for your needs?

That's quite strange -- it is indeed supposed to remember the resource/location you had open in any pane you close -- I just tested it on my device here and it behaves as expected. Can you try the following?

    1. Open ESV in the top panel. Wait for it to finish loading.
    2. Open the ASV in the bottom panel. Wait for it to finish loading.
    3. Close the bottom panel.
    4. Force stop the app (Go to your system's settings -> Manage Applications -> Logos (or Vyrso if you're using that) -> Force Stop).
    5. Open the app to the reading view. Wait for it to finish loading.
    6. Open the bottom panel. Wait for it to finish loading. Does the ASV appear?

...If the panels are set to link the reference point in the FIRST open panel should cause the newly opened SECOND panel to navigate and match.

What you're describing would be a bug. I'll look into it.

Following these directions does reopen the ASV as would be expected. There may be something else that factors into the behavior I described. I will try and pay attention next Sunday and see what happens. The times I have seen this is when I have had the second panel (with SBLGNT usually) closed for a week or two and then go to open it with the ESV open in the primary pane. On each occasion the Summarized Bible opened instead of the SBLGNT then the ESV navigates to the reference point of the Summarized Bible. This behavior has been seen repeatedly on the iPad and once on the Kindle Fire. Can I ask what resource gets loaded in the second panel if no history is found? (I.E. the first time a user opens the panel on a new install)

The very first time you open the second pane in Logos for Android, it will either be your preferred bible (if you have a non-bible open in the first panel) or the Summarized Bible of the New Testament (if you have a bible open in the first panel).

I can't speak to how iOS works, but on Android, that setting is only supposed to be cleared if you uninstall the app or clear the app's data. Let me know if it occurs without you doing either of those things. Thanks!

So, for example, if you have a commentary in one screen and your preferred bible in the other, then any reference jumps from your commentary will navigate your preferred bible in the other screen.

The problem then is that the commentary also "jumps" to that reference when the panels are linked. This could be improved if the software overrides the link in that situation else I have to make a change in Settings and then remember to reverse it.

Yes, for now it is good enough.  With the split screen option Logos on Android is getting closer to being a very good tool.  Offline searching and highlighting will make it much, much better.

Thank you for your help, David!

    Grace and peace!
