FYI Layouts, Extended Sync times, and Windows Not Ressponding issues

I Have had an interesting anomaly occur that others may be interested in.

A number of my saved Layouts have been used for several months.

I was having difficulty with long Layout loading times which evolved into extended Windows Not Responding issues.

I became suspicious of one of my saved Layouts, which I deleted and reconstructed after rebooting Logos.

Amazingly the problem disappeared. I then deleted and reconstructed the rest of my layouts. Logos now switches layouts much faster and seems to respond quicker all-around with no Windows Not Responding issues.

The program also syncs much faster now.

Thanks for this Ray. Can you be more specific on what your symptoms were, and why you thought rebuilding your layouts from scratch might help? What was it about that one layout that made you suspicious? Finally, do you have any idea what changed between the saved layout and the rebuilt one?

Did opening the layout and resaving (update to current snapshot) not resolve the issue?

Another related question, did you have any hardware or screen resolution change that may have caused the layout issue you describe?

Finally, when you rebuilt your home page, did you do it from memory, take notes, take a screen shot, other? How did you go about rebuilding?

I'm asking these questions because it may further help folks diagnose and resolve problems they may be having.

What forced my looking into it was Logos continually going into a Not Responding mode, even when I did something as simple as changing from one resource window to another.

What put me onto looking at layouts is noting that the program responded better when using a different layout.

Updating the troublesome snapshot made no improvement.

My home page is relatively straight forward, several translations in one pane and commentaries and misc. resources in a second pane. I deleted the snapshot and rebuilt it from memory after rebooting Logos (I don’t know if the pre-reboot was necessary, it’s just an old Windows 3.0 troubleshooting habit.)

History: The program had been slow to change Layouts for some time. (I have recently reinstalled the program on a new Windows 7 install – changed the hard drive - all layouts were carried over, response of the computer was not effected.). The only change made to the system immediately prior to the major slowdown was installing LogosScraps, which I then uninstalled and even did a prior Scraps Windows system restore, to no avail. No resolution or other system changes were made.

I know the whole thing sounds kind of goofy, but when remaking my saved Layouts made such a profound change in the way the program responds I thought it was worth passing on.

PS. I have used the program for years and love it!

I'm going to guess the problem was the old layout with the new hardware, but I have nothing to base that on, except a rudimentary (and possibly flawed) understanding of how layouts are saved/stored/retrieved/displayed. Something in the display system changed, but some old data was left in the layout (even after updating to current snapshot?!).

It's an interesting solution, one I hadn't heard described quite the way you described it, though there have been similar issues with layouts being saved with corrupt data and crashing the Logos on startup.

I really don't think the hardware had much to do with it, thje only thing that changed was the hand drive. that change was made several weeks ago.

The response before and after the change was much the same, somewhatt slow. The flip between layouts is much faster now.

Why don't we just blame it on Windows like everything else that happens. [:S]

I wish you had some logs from before/after, in case they showed us what actually caused the problem.

The last entry in the error log is dated the 12th, that two days before the problem got serious.
