Searching in a book

Here is a real example of the problem I am having.  "the book 'Narrative Art in the Bible' has a chapter on 1 Kings 1.  The book is not listed as a commentary, so how would I know of this chapter if I was not already familiar with the book, and if I did not want to do a complete all text search, for it would yield too much information?"

You can do a search on <1 Kings 1> (either in that book or your entire library, or a collection) and it will find all places that refer to that Biblical text, even if only one verse of it.

Hi Doug,

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, because I'm sure sure what you mean by the title of the thread, but I'll attempt a few answers. If I've misunderstood your question, please feel free to clarify, or if you're not sure how to do one or more of the steps, just ask.

Essentially my response is that if I was studying 1 Kings in general terms, I probably wouldn't want to look at a book called "Narrative Art in the Bible", unless I was doing a really indepth study. If I was doing an indepth study, then a search across my entire library for references to 1 Kings 1 would probably be necessary. It only takes a few minutes. Although it would return millions of results, doing a Ranked or By Count search would make the most relevant results come to the top, so you'd only want to look at the first page or so of results to see what's relevant. To speed up the process, you'd probably want to include only monographs - you can create a collection for that (personally I also exclude Topical Bible Indexes from the collection too). When you're searching for Bible Passages it's best to place the reference in angle brackets to make sure Logos knows it's a Bible reference you interested in, so <1 Kings 1>. When I do such a search, Narrative Art in the Bible comes up in the first dozen or so results of a ranked search.

You can also create a custom passage guide to achieve the same thing if you wish; you'll need to a Collections section to the default passage guide, and set the collection to the one you created for monographs.
