FIrst Unread Post

I know this has been suggested at least once before, but we really need to have a "first unread post" button at the top of each thread.

Why? I think they all get read by someone. Does it get nominated for the Guinness Book of World Records? [;)]

How about an option to show unanswered posts, rather than unread posts? Even if it was for the entire forum, I'd like to see this. In fact, I'd probably prefer it to be a catch-all for the entire forum, rather than have to go through each category separately.

like this? (or do you mean posts within threads?)
While I like this suggestion, the question is whether a topic becomes unanswered or unread whenever another responds. I would hope so since otherwise much of the discussion could be overlooked. In the end though, I suppose the best answer is simply to check each topic to ascertain its status.

Just in case my suggestion isn't clear: I want a button at the top of the page of each thread which will instantly load the first unread post by the user who clicked the button. This is particularly helpful when threads start spanning 4 or more pages. Another forum I read from time to time has this feature. When I have been gone a while, it can be a daunting task to figure out where I left the "conversation." This feature is a lifesaver.

It seems like it ought to do that by default when clicking the link for the thread from the list of threads from the forum.

If you click the link in the Latest Post column instead of the thread subject line (Topics column), it will take you to the end of the thread (which could be a multi-page thread), thus saving you a lot of paging through old posts. If you've been away for several days and there's been a lot of chatter on that thread, you might have to scroll back a page or two, but it's usually easier to find where I left off by starting from the end of the thread than from the beginning. And if it's a thread with that much chatter on it, it's probably just as well I missed out.

It was especially problematic when the forum was especially active with vigorous critical discussions: http://community.logos.com/forums/t/6836.aspx?PageIndex=1

heck yeah, Rosie, I agree! I was really excited when I discovered this, and use it almost exclusively, since. But alabama does have an intriguing suggestion, because, as you say, sometimes there are reams of data one has missed, and it would be nice to be taken to that post appearing after your last read post.

Yes, indeed! I don't know if the software can keep track of your last read post, though. It's easy enough to know what pages you've clicked on, but as reading posts is done by scrolling through a page, does it know if you've actually read them or just paged through quickly to get to the end of a page? Can it even tell what post was at the top of your screen if you paged part way down through a page of a thread (it would depend on your screen resolution, how big you'd sized your browser window, etc.). Probably a non-trivial problem. But at least if it could keep track of the last page you'd read, that would help.

Below is a screen shot of another forum I visit from time to time. Recently I read a post that made my jaw drop, but when I went back and read the context, I understood where the poster was coming from. The way that I visit the Logos Forums is to have a grouping of tabs which opens up certain forums that I am interested in. When I am logged in (which is almost always), I can see which threads are new (or have new content) since I visited last. I choose which ones I want to look at. It would be nice at that point to click on the first page and click "first unread post." Now, I generally click on the last page, but I may miss some posts by doing it that way.

I agree with this. Most forums have this either by link or a button. This one not having it puts it way behind others in usefulness for active readers.

I believe the normal way to do it is to assume that once you've opened [the last page of] a thread, you've read it. The first post added after you last opened the last page then becomes the first unread post.
I'm used to forums automatically opening all threads to 'last unread post', one of many reasons I find Logos forum software annoying, and a major reason I choose to read by e-mail.
