Logos 4.5 Release Candidate available

Logos 4.5 Release Candidate 1 is now available for testing. It should be released via automatic updates within the next two weeks, but you can install it now if you'd like to see what's new and improved.

The biggest change is that Notes and Highlighting have been unified. Each highlight is now backed by a note in one of your Notes Documents; from there you can change the highlighting style, add or remove the icon that shows next to the highlight in the resource, and even add textual notes to that highlight in your Notes Document. When you upgrade, you'll get new Notes Documents for your existing highlights (one per highlighting palette); you can now turn sets of highlights on or off by (un)checking that Notes Document in the visual filter menu for a resource. Logos 4.5 will also sync notes and highlights with the upcoming v2.0 of the iOS app (keep an eye on the iPhone/iPad forum for an announcement of when that's available in the App Store).

We've also improved Personal Book Builder and added the ability to print footnotes (at the bottom of a page) when printing a Logos resource.

Can you expand on the implications of the 'Sync Check' command, though i.e. if a user has extensive notes and highlighting how long will this check take? What does one do if sync errors are reported? Why would I want to perform this command anyway?

I'd like to better understand how Legacy Highlighting will be converted to Notes and what I can then do.

It seems clear to me from Bradley's linked info that when I get 4.5, it will build several new Notes files--one for each highlighting pallet that I have in Logos (I currently have a total of six). Then, every highlight anywhere will get recorded line by line in the note file for which that style was associated (by "host" pallet).

What isn't clear is if in the future I will instead want any highlighting in a given document (regardless of pallet) to be written to a Notes file for that document--which would probably only include the highlighting (i.e., not any textual notes that I would also be creating for just that document).

- And if I do want to work this way, is there some "easy" way to drag and drop the "converted" highlights from their pallet-named files into the notes file that I would create for that document (i.e., not also dragging over highlights that are applied in other documents too)? I certainly don't want to have to manually re-create all my highlights.

- I recall reading that there is an option I can change from the default of "store highlights in a notes file named after their pallet" to a different option, which I think was something like "store highlights in the last used Notes file."

-- The way I currently use Notes files is that I use several: one for Notable Quotes, one for Biblical Points to Ponder, Things to Remember, Cross-Refs--these are all used for any resource--and then usually a note file that is probably oriented to the specific resources I am reading, and potentially also a task--i.e., prepping a lesson plan based on the resource. I suspect I should only run the upgrade on one computer at a time--but when I run it on the second computer, will it create duplicate highlights (i.e., as it converts the local instance of highlights in addition to downloading the "new" Notes files created when converting the first computer?) Rinse/repeat for the laptop... ?

I'd really like to get a better understanding before I convert to the new system.

I can't answer all of your questions, but I will try to answer some as best as I can.

You can drag & drop each note (which represents a highlight) into a new/different note file. If you like to highlight as much as I do, you will likely have a VERY large note file for each pallet you have used. I really only used one pallet, so my note file was particularly large. It took me 4+ hours to move highlights into book specific note files. I don't know if this is necessary or not, but I was trying to trouble shoot something and thought it would be a good idea.

You can set highlights from a pallet to go: 1) into the last used note file 2) a pallet specific note file or 3) the note file of your choosing.

That is a REALLY good question. I haven't heard of any problems so far, but you never know.

As Alabama24 said, you can direct all highlights in a palette to a specific note file. If you later change this setting, those highlights already recored in the previous file will not be moved.

You cannot link a palette to a resource directly. You can probably come up with a work-around (multiple palettes, for example) but you'd have to keep selecting the 'correct' palette or keep changing the name of the note file to record your highlights in back in the palette you are using. So it will be a challenge.

You won't be any worse off than you are now no matter where the highlights are stored since they aren't stored at all right now. Some of us will ignore the whole thing until we see a real use for this merging.

Alabama24 said you can drag and drop highlights between note files. Correct. You can, however, only drag one at a time by dragging the note color box to the left of the note title. That will take awhile.

I had asked for options to be available for the migration to partially avoid this, and there is no easy way to move highlighting from one file to another! Logos should document this in the Release Notes.

Yes.

Yes, on the Palette menu for Highlighting. But on the right-click menu in the resource you can choose from open Note files only (as per v4.3 for annotations).

Yes to one at a time. It should not create dupes as the new sync system was designed to eliminate v4.3 issues like this.

From your descriptions, it sounds like I'm going to operate with the pallet Notes instead of resource-specific Notes [for highlights]. Without an automated way to drag/drop all of the highlights (by resource) into a new notes file, I can't see myself ever doing that manually one-at-a-time...I've been highlighting like mad for years. I just hope that these super-huge pallet Notes files won't become a hindrance to Logos performance as they continue to grow. [I am seeing huge performance issues today in highlights being displayed after I apply them in my ESV, as noted in other threads]

I suppose this also means I'll not be able to "share" highlights for a resource with other Logos users (i.e., a class I teach) [since all highlights will be intermixed in pallet files].

You would run this if instructed to by a developer or Customer Support (e.g., if you had called in because your app was showing a "broken" sync icon). We would then analyse the log files it generates, compare against the sync DB (if necessary) and determine how to proceed.

If you have a lot of notes and highlights, this command could take a long time (and use a lot of bandwidth). We documented it for completeness, but don't intend it to be used unless tech support recommends it.

My small one seems to compile faster, but more importantly more reliably (without the “Build failed – Could not remove existing resource” message).
