SUGG: Right-click highlight menu

I would like an alternative way to apply a markup to a text. A highlight option with a flyout to display the various highlighters (top 10 most-used would be fine too).

Sometimes on a small screen the highlighters window takes up too much real estate. CTRL-K works well if I'm using the same style over and over again.

This solution would also allow us to have highlighting in reading view.

This is a great idea.

Under the selection tab on the right-click context menu would, at the very least, be a good place to put a highlight option (to apply last highlight style). This would be helpful for those who are not good at remembering shortcuts. And, if my hand is on the mouse, it may be quicker.

How about dragging highlight styles to the Shortcuts bar?

What about dragging them to Bookmarks, which would then associate them with Ctrl+1, Ctrl+2, etc. so you could have your 10 favorite styles linked to fixed character combinations?

Since you can't type in a book, we could even handle single-character "hot keys" for highlights. What if you select text, and then could hit any alphabetic character to use the assigned highlight on the selected text? This would allow mnemonic association of highlight styles...

that does sound nice. Dreaming big here, If pressing "Y" highlighted and pressing consecutive keys in a typing manner added the typed text to a pop-up text box of sorts that was a temporary holding place for a note that could then be assigned to a note file, then we would be saved from the right-click "add a note" step.

I like the hotkey idea! Preferably they would be user-designated, especially after custom highlighting schemes (fingers crossed) get implemented.

I don't so much like the idea of hitting n for note etc. Given that note-takers have various different note document an n hotkey would have to make an assumption about what note file in which to place the annotation. I would rather have the control of right click for those instances, even though it is slower.

2. Single character hot-keys ... MAYBE, but with the more hard-wired approach in L4, I'm not sure I like this too much, unless it's configurable.

I would love to be able to create a named highlighting scheme. For instance, I might call one the "rainbow study" (yes, just like the rainbow study Bible). I would be able to "highlight" the background (not the text itself) various sections of the Bible 1) maybe based upon a topic or 2) based upon a Bible period. I could easily turn this highlighting feature off or on in the visual filter drop-down much like the way the visual filters work (maybe having a highlighting icon with its own dropdown menu).

For my 2c worth +100 for configurable hot-keys bound to various actions (with support for single-character hot-keys), esp. for highlighting.

For what it's worth the best key-binding features I've ever found are in Eclipse (a Java programmer's tool). See its key configuration help page for some ideas.

What's really useful is that it permits multi-stroke keybindings. For example, one might configure Ctrl+Shift+X J to eXecute some Java code, while Ctrl+Shift+X W might eXecute a "Web-page". Single-stroke shortcuts are supported, but support for multi-stroke shortcuts means the available letters go a little further. To use, one would press Ctrl+Shift+X then release the Ctrl, Shift and 'x' keys and then press 'j'.

This sort of multi-key support (and easy configuration) makes Eclipse very efficient to use since I hardly ever have to lift my hands from the keyboard to reach for the mouse.

Also, improved "word selection" ability would be good. Right now it's
difficult to get an entire word selected using the mouse. Sometimes I end up selecting
only part of the word (usually missing the first or last character in
the word) and only realize once I've applied a highlight. Then I need
to "Erase" the highlight, carefully select the entire word and re-apply
the highlight.

Having Logos be smarter (that is, understand word
boundaries) while I'm trying to select words will help a great deal.

I like this idea, Bob. It keeps things uncluttered. Let us define the keys in the highlighting window so we can pick which ones we use. Then this feature could be used in reading view and anywhere else without cluttering up our screen or our right-click menu.

I like this solution. But what about this thought: Certain markup styles are already tied in our minds such as CTRL+U for underline, CTRL+I for italic, CTRL+B for bold? I wouldn't mind if I could configure my own keys for lots of similar shortcuts. Y for yellow, N for note (last file used), c for clipping (last used).

preference here would be...

dragging highlighting style to shortcuts bar (great for tablet use)
- do this with "add to 'note file' also
assign single character hot key (would like to have option to do this with favorites or other functions)

other highlighting considerations...

user created styles
grouped styles
highlights grouped styles function more like files (visual filter) so we can toggle on/off sets of highlights without erasing or having to turn all style sets on/off
