Highlighting help

Now that 4.5 is live, and with iOS v2 app coming soon, I will be doing more work with highlighting. I have been using (and really will continue to use) highlighting in a relatively basic way. That is, I highlight in only a couple of colors (yellow, green and sometimes red) using only one "palette" - the Highlighter Pens palette. I don't do extensive markup, but more as if I were reading with a yellow highlighter in hand, so I can find the main thoughts later more easily. This is especially true as I read commentaries for sermon prep.

Now with notes linked to highlighting, I will get (finally!) syncing and highlighting on my iPad. The question is, do I need to (or should I?) modify/change/rename/etc the palette, or start a new palette, or do something more sophisticated? Should In have a different highlighter "note" for various collections (e.g. Genesis commentaries, Titus commentaries, etc.)?

Any advice, screenshots, wiki links would be appreciated!

I have to run but wanted to give you a quick reply... The short answer is that time will tell how to best organize this for your own needs.

The two screen shots reveal the palette menu. Notice at the bottom of the second screen shot: It is important to know what note file your highlights are going into. You can send them to a palette specific note file; you can choose a note file; or you can set it up to go into the last used note file. Each has advantages & pitfalls.

That makes sense. Assuming that I would rather have smaller, multiple files, how do I go about doing that? Obviously, the "one big file" option is the default (at least for me) so I would not need to do anything. But if I wanted to break down my note files into something like "OT commentary notes" or even "Genesis notes" how do I get my current highlights broken out? Is the only way to manually migrate them one by one (and I don't even know how to do that)?

First, you would create the note file you want. For example, I created one for every book I have highlighted in. This may not be the best option. It took me 4+ hours to migrate all my notes into the right folders (I had 115 pages of notes).

Currently, yes. You simply drag & drop (although it takes a little bit to figure out where to "grab" to "drag".

This is very good help. So assuming that I want to migrate some notes to a new "palette" (that is the way to organize them into subnotes, right?) how do I do that? Is there a wiki for that? This may sound dense, but I have not done anything advanced with highlighting/notes and I don't know where to start.

To clarify - a "palette" is like a box of crayons/highlighters/pens. If you want to create a new palette (with whatever styles you want) you can do that. You can tell that palette to send all highlights to a specific palette note file. On the other hand, you can create a single palette and tell it to send the highlight notes to the last open note file. Personally, I would rather do the later. If you like to use keyboard shortcuts, you can designate keystrokes to styles within a palette. If you keep adding palettes, you will run out of keys to use.

51 pages (A4) for solid colors
29 Inductive
some pages for other palattes

And I have to say, it's just the beginning of my work with Logos ... [*-)]

I was thinking about the following strategy:

One Inductive palette for each of my main bibles (English, German, Hebrew & Greek)
One palette maybe for commentaries
And one for other resources

But it has one major disadvantage:

My shortcuts will work only for one specific palette ... [:(]

Will that really be the best solution for me?
Or is there an even better one?
(I have a good Internet bandwidth at home.)

Right click on the Palette in Highlighting and choose a default file from the menu item at the bottom.

All styles of that palette are assigned to the note file.

Are there instructions anywhere showing this?

Fred - you are on a PC, and I haven't touched one for 10 years, so some of this may be slightly different... Hopefully you can figure it out or a PC user can fill in the gaps.

Go to File: New: Notes
Name the note file what you want to
Click to the right of the pallet name in the highlighting menu (which brings up a drop down menu)
At the bottom of the drop down menu, you can change the settings for where the note goes:

A. Palette-specific note file

B. Most recent note file

C. Select your own from the list

NOTE: I don't think there is really a difference between "A" and "C" other than "A" creates a note file with the name of the palette.

I just found out that we can do this in IPhone App, after highlight, just click on the highlight, and you can edit the highlight to add note to highlight, have not got it sync with my desktop yet. Once it sync I will let everyone know what happened at the desktop end.

1. Open the tri-color (Visual filters) icon in the toolbar and untick Notes files until you no longer see the highlight!

2. Choose a phrase in the Highlight and Search "My Content".

Notes and highlights sync is temporarily disabled in iOS. We are working on a fix.

The only way that I know is to go to the print/export feature and see how many pages the file will take to print. [Make sure you don't press print! ]

NOTE: If you have a lot of highlights and try to "print" a note file, it will attempt to build the print preview for a long while (as long as you have memory), and eventually Logos will crash.

I don't know exactly what the limit is, but the biggest note file I've successfully opened in print view has been 312 pages.

Please vote for Logos User Voice suggestion => Highlighting and Notes Integration Improvements that includes:

"When right click on a Highlighted word, please add Edit Annotation and Open Annotation while keeping Remove Annotation. Open Annotation would position note file to annotation plus open note file, if needed."
