New Resources & Indexing

Two days ago while playing around in Logos 4 (searching entire library) I discovered I had two new resources - Collins Cobuild Pronunciations and The Ultimate Priority. So far, my system has been indexing these resources over 12 hours (it took only 5-6 hours top index nearly 4400 resources on my initial install). At one point, Logos 4 indicated less than 20 minutes of indexing remained. Now it shows over 19 hours remaining.

Obvioously something is not right - is there a fix or workaround? If my machine is turned off or indexing is paused for 4 hours, does Logos restart the indexing process or does it begins where it left off?

Also, is there a more direct way of knowing when resources are added or updated?

(By the way, the Collins Cobuild Pronunciation doesn't work - there is no sound!!!)

Pause the indexer and check that you can conduct searches in L4 (try a Basic Search of Entire Library for God) - report any messages. This second session of indexing should be building a supplemental index that involves only the two extra resources! Pausing the Indexer will allow you to resume, but turning off the machine will start it afresh.

Are there any logs, Logos4indexer.log + logos4.log, for this session in \my documents\Logos Log Files? If so zip them and attach to your next post.

Yes, I'm able to pause the indexer and do all the searches. In the search window, I get a results tab with the two new resources indicating that results won't be complete. I did a search of my "C" drive (virtual machine) for the log files, but couldn't locate them. I also searched the Mac side of my machine (since my default "My Documents" is pointing to a shared folder) - didn't find them there either.

I did discover this morning (as well as two mornings ago) that I got an error along the lines, "Windows encountered a problem with Logos 4 and had to shut it down" (in so many words). I wonder if the two book files may be corrupted, thus causing the indexer to fail? Do you think deleting the two book files and redownloading them will help?

Try hiding them. Open Program Settings, expand Hidden Resources, and drag the resources there! Restart L4. They should not be found in Library and will be removed from the resource folder. To re-instate them go to Hidden Resources, right click and select Unhide!

For logging put the enclosed files in "C:\My Documents\Logos Log Files" (create it if necessary) and execute the EnableLogging file.

This morning, the indexing that was triggered by the new resources DID complete without crashing. I DON'T know if it was the fix, but last night I remove the new book files from from my resource folder, rebooted windows, then copied the files back into the resource folder and rebooted windows again. I then allowed the indexing to proceed overnight. After 8-9 hours, the indexing completed without incident. I also confirmed that after a full library search, results from the new resources appeared with the rest of the library.

Glad that worked for you. You will now understand that resolving indexing issues is more art than science.

Would you check your \Logos4\Data\{random}\LibraryIndex folder and let me know if there are any files with the name "supplemental"? If they are not present then you triggered a full index!

I didn't find any files with the name "supplemental." So I guess a full index was triggered (which would explain the time it took to complete).

I read Logos web site's FAQ concerning indexing. There are a couple of statements I find somewhat confusing. Concerning the addition of new resources, it says in one place, "when new books are added to your library, the index will be rebuilt to know the position of every word in that resource." This seems to say that the ENTIRE index will be rebuilt when new books are added - which happened in my case. On the other hand, further down in the article it says, "When a new book is added it will appear at the
beginning of your search results. You can choose to merge these two
indexes and re-index your entire library at a later time." This seems to refer to a creation of a "supplemental" index of the new resources, and that I would have the option to do a full index at a later time. However in my case, I was not given the option - a full index was triggered, crashing a couple of times before completely on the third attempt.

Does the addition of new resource always trigger a full index? Or should it trigger a supplemental index, giving me the option of doing a full index when it is more convenient?

Otto the addition of new resources will only trigger a full re-index when the size of the supplemental index reaches 25% of the full index.

Interesting, Damian... my Logos 4 library has 4377 resources. Two updated resources triggered the re-indexing. I don't know how indexing is accomplished but it seems strange that the indexing of two resources would be at least 25% of the full index of 4377 resources - unless of course there is something unusual about the Collins Cobuild Pronunciation (which, by the way, is muted on my system ???).

Considering how long the indexing took, the file could be enormous (you could check your resource folder). This may in fact have produced a very large supplemental index.

From the times of your indexing sessions, it looks like the new resources took 3-4 hours, which is worse than reverse interlinears (20 minutes each on my machine, which I suspect is slower than yours!). So the initial indexing may have been problematic for supplemental indexing. but when you removed and replaced them a full indexing was triggered and that was OK. Now that they are part of the full index your only worry is when they get updated. I suggest you start logging on future downloads. Exit L4, enable logging and then let the download proceed.
