Question about hyperlinks in PBs; want popup to show ranges within a non-Biblical text

I couldn't find an answer to this question on http://wiki.logos.com/Hyperlinks.

If in my PB I have a Biblical reference that includes a range of verses, e.g., Matt 5:3-12, and hover over that hyperlink in the book, Logos will pop up an excerpt of the text from that range and will include all of the verses mentioned (or as many as will fit).

I can even force this by using a Datatype that includes a range of verses, e.g., [[Beatitudes >> Bible:Matt 5:3-12]]

But what if I want to do the same thing with a non-biblical resource, for example Didache 2:6-7? How do I construct the link for this? All I know how to do is get Logos to generate the URL for me and then paste it into the link like this:

([[Didache
2:6-7 >> logosres:anf07;ref=ApostolicFathers.Did_2.6;off=34]]

But how do I get it to do a range, so that when I hover over the link text, it shows me both verses 6 and 7?

Incidentally, with the link as is, I'm getting some bizarre behavior which I think is a bug (can anyone confirm that it is?) -- the popup shows not just Didache 2:6, but also some commentary on it from Hermeneia. Say what?! That came from out of the blue, and I didn't ask for it and don't particularly want it in this context.

You can always put Didache 2:6-7 in the reference box and use Wiki copy, which will give you something like [[Didache 2.6–7 >> logosres:apfthlkeng;ref=ApostolicFathers.Did_2.6-7]], which will work just fine.

However, what you really want is a reference, not a resource, link. That would look like this: [[Didache 2:6-7 >>
    ApostolicFathers:Did 2.6-7]]
. (Remove everything up to the = and from the semicolon onwards, and change underscores into spaces, and dots into colons.) The Wiki page you want is http://wiki.logos.com/Finding_the_right_datatype_name_and_reference

EDIT: when I said "change ... dots into colons", I did, of course, mean the dots between the datatype and the reference, not necessarily dots within the reference (though in this case I would assume Did 2:6-7 works as well as Did 2.6-7 (at least it does with Bible references); not sure if that is true with every possible kind of reference, though).

EDIT 2: Yes, it worked with a colon in a Didache reference, and also in Josephus.

I'm getting some bizarre behavior which I think is a bug (can anyone confirm that it is?) -- the popup shows not just Didache 2:6, but also some commentary on it from Hermeneia. Say what?! That came from out of the blue, and I didn't ask for it and don't particularly want it in this context.

No, it's not quite out of the blue. What happens is you have a resource (not a reference) link, that doesn't go to your prioritized resource of that kind, so Logos is showing you the same reference both in the version it's directly linked to, and the version you have told Logos you prefer (which in this case happens to be a commentary). Don't blame Logos if your resources aren't prioritized the way you want them [;)].

Having recently written the Wiki page fgh refers to, I was looking forward to answering this. But I cannot improve one tiny bit on what she just wrote!

    Sorry! Thanks!

Now I feel really bad about suggesting an improvement to the Wiki page, but I'm going to do it anyway. You explicitly say 'change underscores to spaces', but I can't find that you explicitly say 'change dots to colons', which threw me off for a while. I couldn't understand why on earth my experimental tags didn't compile as they should, and even began to suspect a bug, but thankfully I figured it out before I posted. It's certainly there, it just doesn't hit the eyes, and if I could miss it, so can others.

    1) I hate typing and so use "af" instead of "ApostolicFathers"...

    2) Giving the commentary instead of the text suggests that you have prioritized that commentary.  Make sure you have your favorite Apostolic Fathers resource prioritized above the commentary series.

Good point. Since I started out with a resource link this time, I didn't think that far. If I'd typed it out myself I probably would have (just as I would have automatically used a colon instead of getting stuck on the dot).

It has to be small letters, though, for some reason. Did and did both work, but AF and Af do not work, only af. I just tested.

(Seems my answer could be improved upon after all [:D].)

Don't feel bad. I'm just glad someone has read it!

What I suggested in the Wiki was taking the element to the left of the period and placing it to the left of a colon, and then take the element to the right of the period and place it to the right of a colon. In practice, you're quite right, it's much easier to simply replace the period with a colon. I've made that clearer now, I hope. If you feel it could be improved just go ahead. The Wiki belongs to us all [:)].

Thanks. Much better! (Like I said above, I generally type myself, and then I probably would have gotten it right, but now I started with that resource link and worked from your page in order to see what Rosie would see, and then I didn't catch it.)

    a) I'm not that good at Wiki editing, and haven't had time to learn. I can add metadata correction proposals and correct typos, and that's about all. [:)]

    b) I hesitate to touch pages that are so carefully composed by someone as that one is.

    c) I tried to correct a couple of typos (or rather the same typo twice) on your Bible Verse Map page a couple of weeks ago, but in spite of trying at several different occasions I only ended up with error messages (I just saw you've now fixed them yourself).

I had large problems editing that page too. I think it wound up simply being too big. (It's almost certainly has the most text content of any page on the Wiki.) When I originally produced my finished version, it wouldn't save at all, and I had to spend quite a bit of time making it smaller.

Interesting. Does that also explain why the text is repeated when I hover over an ECF reference like this?

Thanks, Robert. Aww, shucks! But I can't take credit for being awesome (at least in this instance [:)]). I'm actually no longer working on the PB I was doing for you. I stopped when I'd gotten it as far as I could go, and when I realized that there was already an even better version available for sale by Logos. This PB I'm working on now is something completely different, which just happened to have some citations from the Early Church Fathers.

I have notice when I have a resource link that includes a type link in it, that Logos will print out first the type link and then the actual resource link in the window.  Most of the time I have noticed this is when I link to a commentary with a Bible link - I get the verse displayed first, and then the commentary.  Easy way in your case should be just to include the type link...

Ah! First I thought it was server errors, since there were a lot of those that day, but then when it went on, I thought you had somehow 'locked' the page because you didn't want anyone to mess it up while you were still working on it. But 'too big' makes sense.

Brilliant, fgh! Thank you! I see an MVP star in your future.

Thanks, but the brilliance is Mark's, not mine. And I very much doubt Logos has the bad judgement of offering me a star -- which in any case I would turn down, so don't waste time lobbying for it.

Does that also explain why the text is repeated when I hover over an ECF reference like this?

Yes, that's how I figured it out.

Yes. When Logos comes across a logosres: link that includes a ref, it puts 2 items in the popup: first the resource referred to, second the most highly prioritised resource with that ref. In this case both are the same.

At the risk of adding another layer of complexity, there is a way to get logosref links from logosres links. (So this is an alternative method to the ones documented on the Wiki page, linked earlier.)

    1. Copy the link to the clipboard, in Wiki format: [[First Apology 39 >> logosres:anf01;ref=JustinMartyr.1_Apol._39]]
    2. Change logosres: into logosref: and delete everything up to the reference itself: [[First Apology 39 >> logosref:JustinMartyr.1_Apol._39]]
    3. If an offset has been added, delete it.

All we're doing is removing the resource specified, and leaving only the reference.

I had reported this behavior as a bug more than a year ago (it was passed on to Development, but no fix seen yet). Are you implying it's by design? Maybe Logos should detect if the two resources it would put in the popup are identical and only put it up once if so.

That's an error in the tagging of the resource.

But what is the difference between a logosref and the datatype reference for a PB? Perhaps just easier to derive?

    None.

If you're just doing one datatype link I think it's easier to do it this way. If you're doing lots of them, I think it's easier using one of the ways on the Wiki because it's a 'prettier' format, and therefore easier to work out what future references will be once you have the first one.
