Suggestion: Book Specific Note File

I am organizing my note files by book. It would be convenient if I could have tell Logos to automatically put all my highlights (regardless of style or palette) into a "book specific note file." This would be a setting that could be changed in the palette menu, just as you can now specify a specific note file; palette note file; or most recently used.

I am talking about individual resources, wether an entire bible, or a book (i.e. "the purpose driven life"). I know that this will eventually require a reworking of file management in Logos… ahem… but that needs to be done ANYWAY! [:)]

Personally, I don't understand why people would want "palette" specific note files.

I use two note files, specifically when studying the Bible. I have the palette specific one for inductive study by book, and then my Bible book notebook. That way if I am marking say a letters recipients and pronouns referring to them, I want them in the Bible, but not have them cluttering my study notes.

I like the idea of having book specific note files, but I think we can manually create them.

Imagine manually creating 100 note files. What about 500. 1000? More? I want resource specific note files tied to the resource and that can be shown or hidden at will (i.e. "show resource specific note files").

My point has nothing to do with you having only two note files, and I don't care if people want to have a "palette specific file" (although this is really semantics… what is the difference between a "palette specific" note file called "highlights" and a user created note file called "highlights," except that Logos automatically created the first one?).

I don't think I would want a note file to be automatically created for my resources (I think it would clutter my note files). Also notes files are created when I the user create a palette, so it still requires me to do something. I might be misunderstanding you, but if Logos did create a note file each book how would that work?

I create a note file for a book of the Bible as I'm studying, and the highlights are in one translation. But I do the same if I am reading a book through. But if I am not actually reading a book through, I don't know that I would want a not file automatically created for every commentary I own. I see it helpful to have a book note file (I distinguish between the the palette for highlighting separate by calling my notes file "notebook").

Bama do you want Logos to just create a note file for each book automatically? Or is what you want different? If the first, would library size, make the notes unweildly?

I think what he is asking for is a solution/command that moves highlights from the "palette" note files to a book specific file. For example, I just spent over an hour this weekend moving my highlights for a systematic theology from Highlighter Pens & Emphasis Markup to a "Systematic Theology" notes file, so that they could all be together.

Right now, it's a pain to move them one by one, especially if there are a lot of them. A command that could do this would be nice. I think the default upgrade path is fine as is, but this command would be a nice bonus.

Also, here's how I'm currently using note files.

For random highlights, I'm fine with the palette specific files. If I'm reading a book from start to finish, I'm creating a note file for that book (i.e. "Chafer's Systematic Theology") that will contain any & all highlights for that book.

For Bibles this is my workflow: I have a translation file (i.e. ESV Highlights) for anything I want to highlight, such as memory verses, etc. If I'm doing a verse-by-verse study on a book of the Bible, I create a new file (i.e. "Study Highlights - 1st Thessalonians") so that those highlights can be turned off/on without cluttering standard highlighting for my Bible. The same is done for any other specific study as well.

Anyone who has used Logos for any amount of time already has a cluttered file management. Logos did not do a good job of designing that aspect of the software. It desperately needs to be reworked. You are absolutely right that my system should not be automatically attempted under the current structure. Having 50 user created files is bad enough… Having 1000 would be unbearable.

In my ideal situation, this could be done "behind the scenes." In the newly created file management area, all of the resource specific note files would be hidden by default, but could be turned on at will. MOST of the time, highlighting note files are not needed by the user, except when we have to manage the note files! I am trying to eliminate this as much as possible. In the old system, you didn't have to worry about which note file the highlight went into. I want to recreate that.

On the mobile app, I envision having a switch on the resource information panel which would allow you to turn on the "resource specific note file." For the Logos user, that would mean that you can turn highlights on & off for each resource. It would also mean that the mobile app would not need to download the highlights for every book.

In the unknown future, Bob has suggested that we will be able to share highlights with other users. Doesn't it make sense to share highlights primarily based upon resources? There are great benefits to some of the new changes, but there were some other advantages to the old system as well. I am not suggesting that "palette specific" or "user created" note files should be eliminated. There are great advantages to those as well (i.e. thematic highlights; multiple readings, etc).

Yes. Or at least whenever a highlight is applied to a book without a file being specified. As I have tried to convey, the file management would be behind the scenes, unless needed.

With the ability to turn the highlighting on/off via the visual filter, I can see many reasons for defaulting to the palette. Many of my palettes are designed for a particular study technique i.e. "classroom" use.
